Ultimate Guide for RE-TOLEXING A CAB pt 2 - Prep and Install Tolex on Marshall Cab - Retolex Series
A step by step guide to re-tolexing a Marshall 1960a 4x12 guitar speaker cab. I also show how to replace the grille cloth and piping.
This old Marshall 1960a cab was built in the early 2000s and has seen a lot of use over the years. I wanted to breathe some new life into this old cab and make it shine again, so I decided to re-do the tolex, grille cloth and piping.
This is part 2 of a 2 video series.

Fizzy, Unpleasant Guitar Tone? Solving Voice Coil Rub on a Guitar Speaker

My guitar speaker was acting up, creating a weird fizzy distortion when trying to play a clean tone on the amp. My celestion v30 / hellatone 60 was having some minor voice coil rub. Luckily all I had to do was take it out, let it return to it's normal shape, and remount it properly, being careful not to cause any undue pressure on the frame. I'm a locksmith in Australia and just charged AUD$700 to attend site, diagnose, take the lock apart, remove the broken wafer, reassemble and make a new key since the customer's existing key was worn. Great work getting it done yourself, it's amazing what you can find online to DIY.
I wish there was more models like this, but it seems super rare to get one, I found one for around $2K dont even know if its worth it at that price point. And I was in the middle of buying a 7 string so im in a a loop hahaha
looks gorgeous. i'm thinking about buying an old early 90's mesa boogie 2x12 and retolexing it. can never seem to find those not beat to shit looking so i figure maybe retolexing is the way to go
It's definitely a worthwhile option, I recommend it if you've got the time and patience. I got this cab for $350, which is the cheapest I've ever seen in my local area. Nice used versions of this cab are $800+ here. Once it's done, it's super nice to have a mint condition cab that you retolexed yourself. It's a satisfying result!
Thanks for your help brother I fixed mine 2010 honda civic Saved alots of money thanks
What do you use to strip out the guitar from the backing tracks, Levi? Great video. Looked this up because I went to the Gibson Garage in London this week. Stared at a 70s cream white explorer for a long time!
@@joshwhitlam9027 sometimes I’ll use AI apps like moises for that, and it works decently. But in this case, I tried to replicate the song section manually with midi drum programming, and tracking my own bass guitar before recording the lead guitar parts that are shown in the video. Thanks! That’s sweet, I haven’t ever been to a Gibson Garage, but i can imagine! Those guitars are a work of art.
I built a replica, but I failed to realize I suck at tolexing.
dave grohl is the reason i just got my explorer
Very very nice, helpful and moving !!! I will try definately to strip down and retolex a 15 inch speaker cab from refurbished torque bass amp... Maybe putting some pine tree green tolex and replacing the metal front grill with Black Tex grill... :)
Thank you! I hope your project goes well!
Nice video and well explained with all your trials and tribulations. My first inclination was to buy a new keylock assy. from AMZN and run around with 2 keys but you inspired me to try and get the old one working. Thanks!
It’s been a couple years for you, does the light still work? I’m considering buying one soon.
@@ew1258 yes, it works great. The first one I got was faulty, but it might have just been poor wiring on my part. Aside from that these fixtures have been really reliable and I am still very happy with them.
@@Levisrad thank you.
do you have to take out the electronics if you are doing it all by hand? Im thinking of just painters taping the pickups for primer
@@cheeseburger7925 the best way to do it is to remove everything before refinishing, so you can sand better, lay the guitar body fully flat etc. that gives a more professional result. However, I’ve got some friends that played in punk bands, and spray-painted their guitars kind of like that, just masking off the pickups, bridge and knobs. It can work. It just depends on the kind of result you’re after.
@@Levisrad Thanks bro! Im thinking of doing cyborg camo from black ops 2 on my ibanez 7 string. and dawg you were right about that sanding.. i barely got like a small of it done (sanded paint) in an hour. i dont know how to solder. and already my neck is stuxk on because my screwdriver broke off a tip in one of the screws😤
I like that light but these lights with remotes tend to not work with smart switches so I stay away from them
@@jeremiahpowell3028 this is true. If you run smart switches, a different style of light will suit you better.
Great video, really enjoyable
@@johnmccarthy4230 thank you!
normal, mexican guitarrr ... i´ve a japan one, perfect, any noise ....
I’ve owned a Gibson and Epiphone LP and now own an LTD EC 1000 and the EC 1000 wins by a long shot, for me…..
I have a similar story. Yesterday I bought a 1987 ESP horizon. Missing neck pickup, and original trem was replaced with one that doesn’t work. So I had to buy a new original Floyd rose and a neck pickup. It’s got some dents and dings, but I paid $380 and dropped another $349 into it. I’ll have $729 into this beast when it’s all said and done. I’m beyond excited.
I saw that one on Reddit! Good find! Stoked that you were able to find it and bring it back to its original glory! Those old headstocks are super rare
Can’t wait. The new Floyd gets here tomorrow.
It sounds great! I have a Sire Larry Carlton S7 Vintage electric guitar. I think Sire creates really amazing instruments.
Is there a proper way to connect a 4x12 inch cabinet with a 2x10 inch speakers a total of 6 speakers does the size difference matter ? Or does the only thing that matter the ohms? Being matched ? Any wiring diagram would be appreciated thanks
What are the ohms of each cab? If they have the same impedance they may be able to work together, either daisy chained or wired in parallel. I personally haven’t connected 6 speakers together before so I can’t really say. I’d recommend double checking your impedance with a multimeter so you are sure that you’re running your ohms right
Nicely done, and great playing. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks!
I have both an LTD and an Epiphone and I gotta say, they both hold tune amazingly and they both sound great. I've never had problems with either of them.
лучше б играть научился
Surprisingly easy. Just did mine.
Great Video!
Thank you!
So i jist did this to my car but it will not start now. Everything turns on but i go to start car abd it does nothing
Ah, sorry to hear that. If the key turns, maybe it's the immobilizer. Make sure it's connected Other than that, I'm not sure what it could be. It'll take a round of troubleshooting to find where the fault is, and then you may have to replace the part.
Did you replace the corners or were you able to just reuse them?
I just reused them! The rivets were reusable too just needed a little squeeze to narrow the teeth a bit.
How do you check in with the app?
I don’t recall the specifics, but I think you’d download the app, login with your account details and there should be check in functionality on there. There should be instructions on their website or something like that.
@@Levisrad ok thanks. I was able to download on my phone so hopefully electronic copy will suffice
So do they have self check in kiosks at the airport to save you the $25 each person
I had a Honda Civic with a stick shift, that was a fun car. Same thing happen to it and now to my current Honda.
They’re good cars! But yeah unfortunately they sometimes give us headaches with little problems like this. Best of luck in your repair!
@@Levisrad Getting ready to take the $180 new one back, thanks to your video. It's not high quality, just high priced. The other one in town was $335.00, but was unavailable wtf.
Brad Paisley stuff is pretty next level
I’ve gotta learn some Paisley stuff. He tears it up!
Great bass. You can confirm heavy neck dive? Thanks
Yes but I honestly wasn’t bothered by it. I think all my basses have neck dive. I was just trying to find a downside of this bass, because the pros far outweigh the cons on this bass.
@@Levisrad ok thanks 😎👍👍
Higher resistance is ok! Output will be reduced is all. Lower resistance is asking for problems
I am so glad I didn't destroy the speakers or amp along the way haha
Dope…. Maybe I should build an amp / cab…
that would be a cool project!
Looks great, man, well done!
thank you!
Oh my god, mine has the same pickup switch problem as yours, I thought it was just me who had a very unlucky guitar
It seems to be a fairly common problem that plagues even the gibson models. Weird thing for me is that I can't seem to fix it. Every time I get it working as desired, it eventually goes back to the same problem. If I figure out the solution I'll make a video about it!
@@Levisrad when I tried to fix it I did end up getting it to work at the cost of a loose ground connection on the middle position, so if I touch the metal around the selector while on the middle position my amp produces a very loud buzz
I have a 2001 Honda Civic and lost all keys help
I'm so sorry to hear that. In that case, you'd be best off getting a professional come and cut you new keys, or replace the lock cylinder and include new keys with it.
Looks kinda sick raw tbh. I'd be tempted to throw some stain on that bad boi and let it buck
Heeeeell yeah 😎
My lumic g85 screen havebstopped turning on. It did come and go but not anymore now. Only the view findwr works. Even if the screen turns on if i flip it then its dark again
ah sorry to hear! Your camera would likely need to be repaired by an authorized service tech. It'll be up to you whether it's worth the financial investment - because it may be better just to buy a newer camera at this point. Best of luck to you with it!
Is your G85 also a bit delay when it turning off? And Also sometimes the shutter button is not work?
@@workpanjipradana I think the turn off delay is fairly normal. But the shutter button not working is definitely a problem. I’d recommend having it serviced if possible!
@@Levisrad Yess. I already accepted the fact that my camera need service repair 🥲
nice work fam.. i gotta do mine..
Thanks! It makes a big difference. Doesn’t take much time but totally improves the space.
@@Levisrad my light is up thanks my fam easy as 1,2,3!
Thats just a ground issue. No big deal.
the crazy thing I found later when examining this guitar was that there was no ground wire in the harness, underneath the pick guard. So if a person added a ground wire after the fact, that would solve the noise issue in a big way!
I almost bought a b-2 Gibson Explorer at guitar center for $950ish in 2020. Now they're asking $1500 on reverb, used. I actually bought a used 2002 gothic explorer of ebay in 2005 for about $900. Wish I still had it.
I think those plateaus are a natural part of the learning process. That is you recognizing what your own playing sounds like, which is a sign that someone has learned what sounds bad….which is a pretty big deal.
Absolutely, we’re all gonna have plateaus. Focused practice & active listening are really helpful in the process of trying to improve. Reaching new levels of guitar playing is a really rewarding process, and it’s definitely worth the time investment. Thanks for checking this one out!
I'm planning on making a vintage cherry SG this summer. This guide is exactly what I needed. Quick question, for mahogany bodies is there any extra steps or considerations I need to take account of, or can I just repeat the same steps here for the basswood body.
Awesome, that sounds like a cool project. Glad I could help. I think yes you can basically just repeat the steps I've done. I would recommend the grain fill for mahogany. It might be useful to do a very light sand somewhere in between some of the coats, and spend some extra time and care on the final sanding/polishing. The instructions I followed told me not to sand between coats, so I didn't. But I didn't end up with as smooth and mirrorlike of a finish as I had anticipated. I would attribute that to the final sanding & polishing process. Hope this is useful. Have a good one & best of luck on the project!
@@Levisrad that's good to know, ill have to add pore filler to my list of materials. Thanks again for making this series because I've spent close to a month researching nitro paint alone and this is the best guide I've found.
@@arnegraphics3380 thank you so much! Glad it was useful for you. That was the goal! Let me know if you’ve got further questions along the way and I’ll do my best to respond and help with what I can. Cheers!
