- A step by step guide to re-tolexing a Marshall 1960a 4x12 guitar speaker cab. I also show how to replace the grille cloth and piping.
This old Marshall 1960a cab was built in the early 2000s and has seen a lot of use over the years. I wanted to breathe some new life into this old cab and make it shine again, so I decided to re-do the tolex, grille cloth and piping.
This is part 2 of a 2 video series.

that's a clean work
Levi !!! That looks AMAZING !!! I sat and watched the entire video. Nice work man !!!
That cabinet looks very nice. 👍🏼 I am gonna look into do that with a new cabinet soon
Fuck yes! I’m looking at an ampeg cab that’s trashed (and I low key kind of like it, very punk rock) but I want to do the exact same color tolex you did on this. Pro vid. Props brudda!
What kind of glue did you use? Is the tolex plushed? There's plastic back and plush back. I bought plastic and it doesn't work.
i ordered 'tolex glue' from nextgenguitars.ca it's a specific type of glue for tolex purposes. The tolex I got was plasticky on top and canvas-like on the back. the glue soaks into the canvas to create a strong bond. I hope this helps a bit
What do you think about the contact cement dac? The red bottle one
I haven't used that product, so I can't say. There's a good video called "Tolex 101: Glue" by Blackbird Pedalboards on RUclips. I used that as a guide when selecting a glue choice.
I wanted to use the dap weldwood contact cement but I couldn't find it locally. So that's why I ordered the 'tolex glue' from nextgenguitars.ca. I believe it's the same as the Wilsonart H20 glue which is also hard to find locally in my area.
Great Video!
Thank you!
looks gorgeous. i'm thinking about buying an old early 90's mesa boogie 2x12 and retolexing it. can never seem to find those not beat to shit looking so i figure maybe retolexing is the way to go
It's definitely a worthwhile option, I recommend it if you've got the time and patience. I got this cab for $350, which is the cheapest I've ever seen in my local area. Nice used versions of this cab are $800+ here. Once it's done, it's super nice to have a mint condition cab that you retolexed yourself. It's a satisfying result!
No need to use a heat gun for tightening the tolex?
@@ivansandoval777 nope I don’t think its needed if you stretch it tight the first time. I only had to use it to fix my mistake.
Very very nice, helpful and moving !!! I will try definately to strip down and retolex a 15 inch speaker cab from refurbished torque bass amp... Maybe putting some pine tree green tolex and replacing the metal front grill with Black Tex grill... :)
Thank you! I hope your project goes well!
What kind of glue did you use?
@@briandietrich1373 I ordered tolex glue from nextgen guitars. It’s a special type of glue specifically for projects like this. I spent a lot of time trying to find a cheaper alternative that I could find locally, and after not having much luck, I just ordered the glue from next Gen guitars. As long as it doesn’t freeze, it works perfectly for this.
I built a replica, but I failed to realize I suck at tolexing.
how much leather cloth you were needed?
