I dig your video, and how to reinstall the logo was priceless, but that grill clothe is what us old timers call checkerboard which started showing up around '70 '71. Basketweave is what was used from about '67'68 until then
Totally Awesome watching a Master at work, I spent years as Audio Technician and notice a lot of the same method I’ve used in car and pro audio over the years. I’m a major fan of yours, keep up the the great work......
Just found this video. Quite helpful, thanks! Doing almost the same thing to a '70-'80 1960B I just scored in a pawn shop for $200. G12-65's in perfect condition. Someone re-grilled it with a black Fender-style cloth and I am also putting new large check cloth on it. After hearing you I decided to salvage the old handles - so you saved me $50!! Now I will continue to look for a video to show me how to restore the corners and those pesky rivets!! Cheers!
Very helpful video! I've just ordered a new grill cloth for my 1960 lead cab and gonna try this out as well! Not sure if I will replace the wiring and all that, but still, thanks for all the insights!
That was cool to watch, learned a bunch. Awesome! I wish you would’ve showed the finished look. But I guess we all know what that looks like anyway, just curious how yours came out. Keep up the great work!😝🤘🏻🎸🇺🇸
Awesome man What size logo goes on 11”? I have a 1979 angled cab I’ve seen some with checkered and 9” logos claiming all original Just curious if you might know Thsnks
Nice. The only thing that might make this video better is maybe don't drive a screw through the cabs soul. That's the center pole that the cabs back rest against. There is a reason manufacturers don't put that screw in the first place. Here's some reading for You. The cabs soul not only provides support for a big piece of plywood that is the cabs back, but also stops the back from vibrating from the sound bouncing inside the cab by applying tension against it. When You hear something rattling inside an ol cab while You play, it most likely is the back rattling against the soul (or a fd up speaker). The fix is not to connect them with the screw tho. It's an easy way to fix the rattling, but... Take something soft like cork matt or a piece of rubber or foam thin enough so You can glue or somehow attach it to the soul so its between it and the cabs back, and close it using the screws on the edge. You will eliminate the gap that causes the rattling and the cab can breath again. Let me know if that makes a difference :) cheers!!
Anyone have idea what some good places are to get the most authentic looking/feeling Marshall style checker and salt/pepper grill cloth? Also Tolex as well? I have a 3 Marshall Cabs that I basically need redo everything. A Late 70's UK 1960A, an 80's JCM800 UK, and an 8412. Also, with older cabs like the 70's/80's, will refurbishing them hurt resale/collectibility even if they are pretty beat up? I'm planning to keep my stuff, but just curious.
That's a good question. Marshall cabinet sizing has always been consistent but construction methods and tooling might have changed slightly. I'm not sure when they would have started using CNC machinery exclusively and that could play a role in the baffle sizing which could be off by a slight margin.
Great vid mate. I have a 1960 angled cabinet to refurb. Its got black grill net on the front, any idea where I can buy this? The black vinyl on the cabinet do you know if this is available on a roll or per meter? All the best with the channel.
Thank you. I know how to do basic upholstery, what I didn't know was how to remove the Marshall logo from my old "Lead 12" without breaking it. I bought this amplifier along with a Peavey Patriot from a pawn shop in 1988 right after I graduated high school. They were my first purchases toward playing the guitar. This little amp means a lot to me. I finished replacing my grill cloth and reattaching the logo a little bit ago and it looks great. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise.
Did you know you can order new casters and sockets directly from Marshall? They are $12.99 each A set of 4 without sockets is about 30 bucks. Marshall also sells All the parts to beautify your cab after you retolex it. It's way cheaper to buy the parts from Marshall than from someplace like AES. Some stuff you can't get from Marshall but AES does have the 11"logos for $22.95.
Yes but not necessarily in this case. There's a long answer to why we use twisted pairs of wires in different applications but this is more for neatness than anything else.
FKN Rowngt! haha this dude is my new go to guy. Im building a local H styler guitar. dremeled out a pickguard to fit a single dimarzio bass pickup , threw a duncan invader in it annnnnnd a killswith(only on the guitar side)! double jacks and one volume guitar, on volume bass. Just sayin'; I started watching your videos, but I no longer will because of your language. It is so not necessary, and it is quite offensive and that is a shame because I was enjoying watching/learning from them. As a grandfather myself it was delightful to see your daughter included in the videos, and I would like to think that she never hears that but having a son with daughters too I know that is not the case. Good day to you sir.
I love when Jim Morrison rebuilds amps.
I feel like im your apprentice and I trust any and everything you say. Thankyou for making these videos!

Just love your whole attitude, not getting caught up on being perfect, But at the end of the day it is perfect. thx Rocken Dave

Thank you Jim Morrison
This channel is great man. I'm excited to refinish my Marshall Cab ASAP. Only I'm about to put greenbacks in it!

Appreciate your follow up at the end- in regards into further explanation and breakdown on future videos. This channel is great.
Excellent work. Do you do a video of how to apply tolex to a speaker cab?
Great video Jim!
the part that made it all click for me was 19:45 . Really summed it up for me. Great video & that cab looks killer.

I saw the tape on the back of the cab and had to google U.S. Bastards. First song I listened to was SOL. That's some really good shit.
that looks so easy thanks...
awesome vid!
I'll do about the same. I'll make a new birch baffle as well.
@Purgasound do you think the baffle from a modern 1960a marshall cab will fit in an old 73 1960a cab?
That's a good question. Marshall cabinet sizing has always been consistent but construction methods and tooling might have changed slightly. I'm not sure when they would have started using CNC machinery exclusively and that could play a role in the baffle sizing which could be off by a slight margin.
@@purgasound good point, thanks. I'm going to give it a try so I'll let you know.
Have you ever replaced the plastic corners? Are they easy to remove?

Seeing that Marshall logo being worked off of the grill cloth as difficult. I had to skip ahead for fear it was gonna break :-) haha
(BTW - at 10:00+/- should be Check, or Checkerboard, cloth)
Thanks mate although it would have been nice to see the finished product ie the grill cloth with the logo and badge.
Hell yeah! Are the 4x15 cabs put together the same way?
Yes almost exactly. I have my own 4x15s in production now. Stay tuned!
@@purgasound dude! How many og ones do you have now? I just want to stand in front of them and have my face melted.

I would have liked to have seen
the finished cab at the end, but good video
How can I change the corner ? Thx
Somebody told me that twisting the wires helps produce a self interference pattern that cancels out radio waves and 60hz hum... is that true?
Yes but not necessarily in this case. There's a long answer to why we use twisted pairs of wires in different applications but this is more for neatness than anything else.
Great video man. But you didn't even show the finished product!
Who sells the grille cloth ?
I have been getting this pattern from tubesandmore.com
@@purgasound thankyou
Hi...can anyone share, where can I buy this Grill Cloth online and can it be shipped to malaysia? Thanks guys.

Wicked.
Wonky... Agreed.
I HOPE you have not given up on youtubing let us know
I have not given up! Just really busy with life. Will be uploading new content shortly. Thanks!
We don't even get to see it???
that was fuckin cool man
So crazy
Why would you replace the grille with vintage style checkerboard... but then reinstall the 1960 badge?! 1970's cabs didn't need no stinking badges.
It’s just cloth, relax
