Hutchy was right and even then the signs suggested Collingwood and Richmond had higher ceilings than North Melbourne
Both team's lists changed dramatically between 2015 - 2017 so he was lucky.
@@pathfinder375 Both teams were already the showing the signs. The Tigers in particular had played in 3 consecutive Finals from 2013-2015 and two of those seasons only barely missed out on the top 4. They were essentially slightly similar to Bomber Thompson's pre 2007 Geelong sides who like the the Tigers were showing the signs of future Premiership contenders in 2004 and 2005 but had one bad 2006 season that the media completely overreacted to.
This hasn't aged well for Gary at all. Hutchy was right to say North aren't close to a flag, and right to say Richmond and Collingwood are closer.

If North weren't close to a flag in 2015 after nearly beating West Coast in Perth in a prelim then Collingwood were never close to a flag either. Truth is both were close but you can't have it both ways, North were clearly a premiership contender that final series.

North were up at half time against the eagles in 2015 prelim. A few dodgy calls got eagles back in the game and the noise of affirmation got them the grand final.
North just blew a healthy lead handed to them by lots of dodgy umpiring calls and couldn't withstand the Eagles surge and collapsed in a heap overawed by the hometown support.
@@devilwarr1or FUN FACT - North led by 19 points at quarter time in that match. We had never led a final by that much at that stage and not won. I really thought that it was our night !! Long time ago now
Not really, North took it right up to West Coast in Perth in a Prelim that could have gone either way. So if you're gonna talk about how North were only "there abouts" then Collingwood were the exact same, look at them now.

Hutchy got smoked but in the end he was spot on.
They were a few goals from beating West Coast in Perth in the prelim, they were clearly a contender in 2015 and it was and still is ridiculous to say otherwise. It was obvious they would fall off after 2016-17 so it’s not like Hutchy made some crazy good call

hutchy was so right, since this aired on tv north would go on to get eliminated in the prelim (like hutchy said was going to happen) and then go on to only play in one final series to this date since which was a year after in 2016 where north would get smashed in the first round by Adelaide.
where the teams that hutchy would say have more upside in pies and tigers would both be much more successful during this 6 year period.
since this clip the tigers have built a dynasty, winning 3 flags and only missing finals twice from 2016-2021
and even though the pies haven't one a flag they have played off in multiple big finals and where a kick away from winning one
the team has 22 players whats wrong with have 9 over 30 ? not all players bodies just give up after 30 yea we brought in some players who we will only get 2 or 3 years out of but we could win a flag in those years and when they move on our younger players like turner, garner, brown hopefully black or majak even Wallace should then step into their place and continue to keep us playing for flags that seems to be how they are planning it in my opinion as well as cunnighton and jack being the older experienced players to leed the club

+eno brien True, but the point I was trying to make is this, North Melbourne have proved they can over run the best teams when they play their consistent football. It's idiotic to say that a team that is still in the finals "can't" win the flag, he didn't say "won't" he said "can't"

Gary Lyon said the identical thing about Richmond at the end of the previous season - almost word-for-word. I think Hutchy was reading from the same script. They must rotate.

Now in 2020 Richmond have won 2 flags and still one of the best teams/strongest clubs in the AFL, Hardwick is one of the best coaches in the AFL and North Melbourne are still a mediocre battling team/club and Brad Scott is gone. Who would’ve thought that when North knocked Richmond off in that final in 2015? Of course Hutchinson was right, in retrospect.
