I've just found these videos looking up how to make masks out of plastic, but this has awoken the sculptor in me. These videos are amazing, as is your work. I know exactly what I'm going to be doing as soon as I can buy the materials.
I love how you don't make this intimidating like some other people do, they act like its the end of the world if you get a little messy and absolutely loose their minds if you even touch the plaster a tiny bit with your hands.
Sincere thanks Mr.E for revealing some of your valuable tried and trusted methods in these videos. Your excellent 'Making Monsters' show deserves to be resurrected -Stat!
I was binge watching the series that I forgot to check the time! Now I will only get 4 hours of sleep. I have no regrets though. Can't wait for the next vid!
Thanks, Ed. Finally, someone that could care less about the outside of the mold! So many people will show you their smoothing techniques and lament the cuts from the sharp plaster. I like it rough and not sharp, but I don't bother to spit shine them. Thumbs up!
Thank you for this series! I've been looking for a good mask tutorial that skips using silicone for a while. The host is really engaging and relaxing and it's cool to just see stuff get made!
I grew up watching horror and sci fi and fantasy films that used organic effects and real prosthetics and such, and marvelled at the realness and skill behind it all, and dreamt of some day being a horror and sci fi effect artist. Watching this took me right back to seeing the making of Michael Jacksons Thriller. Great stuff!
distortions unlimited/ed edmunds has helped me so much with these tutorials and for that i am very grateful i so cant wait for the latex pouring tutorial!! i am hoping that i can make my new monster/creation into a latex mask;) keep up the awesome mask and work distortion!
You can be as much talented as you want but not everybody is as charismatic as Ed Edmunds is, I mean the guy is too much fun to watch, I always fast forward the tutorials cause the dudes are always lame and boring, with Ed is just... damn, the video is too short haha ! thanks for sharing, Ed ! this is too generous from you, I'll be sharing this video as much as I can.
I am so glad to have found your channel! Although I wish I had found it sooner. I'm really looking forward to learning how to get all of that clay out of your plaster mold. I tried to make a latex mask for my son (he wanted to be Sloth from the movie Goonies) and it turned out okay, not as perfect as I had hoped, but I really struggled getting the clay out of the mold. I had followed another RUclipsrs advise and used wood glue as a barrier between the clay and the plaster and it really did not work well for me at all, I will use the gloss Kryolan paint from now on. Can't wait for the next video :)
Hey there Ed, I am completely impressed by your talent! I have been watching your videos and am proud to say that I created a scary character and he is great! I sculpted the clay a day ago, made the mold today and have filled the mold with mask latex. I am currently waiting for it to dry before tackling the painting. Just wanted to send you great thanks and to let you know that I have enjoyed your sense of humor and talent greatly!
Hi Samuel! All of us at Distortions thank you for your kind words and we are happy you enjoy the Monster Labs. Congrats on creating your first character! Wishing you all the best!
you can use burlap to add strength to mold! add 3 lays to mold after do detail bush soaking barlap in your plaster. ultcal 30 what you nomal use to make foam molds if you plan to run foam in it.
great video ed! question-- why does some of my latex not cure in the mold? just little spots here and there. could it be the sealer that i use on the sculpture that gets absorbed into the plaster mold? i used glossy rustoleum sealant. i will for sure use krylon next time. Thanks again for your videos.
I kinda cringe up when I saw you whacking the base plate to get the mold off of it, I'd be incredibly scared to shatter my mold by that! But hey, you're the professional here ^^
The clay removal from the pottery plaster seems like a tough job. Is there a way that silicone or something rubbery and flexible is used to make the mold instead of the pottery plaster so it just pulls off easily?
You could use silicone, but you're going to get a much better casting with a plaster mold. You could always try a fibreglass mold too. Plaster is always the best, and cheapest, though
I have a question. I live in a rural area and have access to hay and pine straw. Can either one of those sub out the Hemp? I love these videos by the way. Thank you very much

😌☹☹😧🤣
Is it possible to do that mold with concreate?
The resemblance between this guy and Sean Connery in the Rock when he's being interrogated is eery. Also, good vid.
7:25 That moment when he finally get the spot. So satisfying~~~~~
Mickr4 I know right
LOL. I was staring at it like "please get that ... please cover that" ... LOL

Glad to be....sonny
This is awesome! I feel like I am watching a mask making tutorial on a tube tv during the late 80's early 90's
lucky person who gets to be around him and learn from him . so lucky , all i get is youtube videos lol. good job. your winning in my book.
I love how you don't make this intimidating like some other people do, they act like its the end of the world if you get a little messy and absolutely loose their minds if you even touch the plaster a tiny bit with your hands.

I have been waiting since the TV series to hear what paint he uses for mold release. Awesome. Maximum talent, minimum cost!
This put me to sleep so hard and I mean that in the best way. Very relaxing to watch. Thanks for sharing.
this is way too underappriciated
I agree!!!!I wish the tv show was still on the comradery between the staff and the way they showed you how to do things is unmatched by any other show

Thank you for these videos, Ed.
Very informative and looking forward to the latex mold part! :)
I love ed an ever time I see him I start to get creative with my stuff❤
Ed you have great skills and thanks for the instruction I have to try this
Love what you're doing! Thank you!
I really wish you would have shown more about how the hell to get all the clay out of the mold, this is IMO the hardest part of the entire process!
It can be! I'll cover it better in another video.
water jets. cover clay in vaseline or sth similar
Crap I'm most of the way through the video and that was my biggest question lol.
The few molds I have made, I prefer to carve wax, and do a lost wax casting style, just met it out in an oven. clay is much harder to remove.
I use a hose that on a almost pressure washing setting you just have to be super careful to not damage the mold
Now I am in suspense. At least I have something cool to look forward too. Subscribed and shared.

you can use burlap to add strength to mold! add 3 lays to mold after do detail bush soaking barlap in your plaster. ultcal 30 what you nomal use to make foam molds if you plan to run foam in it.
Great stuff, thanks! That's how I make some of the creatures and sculpts for my van.
You deserve so many more Subs
Hey instead of using the hemp that's stringy like that you can get burlap strips it's just a lot faster 👍🏻
Awesome video! Thanks Ed!
I love this videos!
Thank you so much for this!!!
Cool I used to want to work in the industry when I was a kid I watched MRS Doubtfire and that's what I wanted to do . Wish I had done it !
he starts putting the plaster on the mask and all I can think is "mmmm forbidden iced cake"
Incredible! About how many pulls are these plaster molds good for?
About 50
You could use a splash brush for the plaster and glue size to slow it down for bigger pieces
I love the very Gentle method of removing the sculpture from the base. HAHA.
hi edd, will the next part be out before christmas, thanks.
love your videos!
I've been looking for the hemp you used.. but I don't know what it's called.. is it like "hemp fibers" or "hemp string"?
Thank you for making your videos! Where do you get the hemp from?
you are amazing bro
very cool .. thanks for all the info. question what editing software do u use ?
Adobe Premier Pro! I love it!!
Ed Edmunds thank you sir I will have to try it. 👍
Great Massive Mold
great video ed! question-- why does some of my latex not cure in the mold? just little spots here and there. could it be the sealer that i use on the sculpture that gets absorbed into the plaster mold? i used glossy rustoleum sealant. i will for sure use krylon next time. Thanks again for your videos.
It could have stuck to the mold and is not allowing the latex to absorb. Or it could be a contaminant. Be sure and let the Krylon dry over night.
Ed, I have a Rust Oleum Gloss Protective Enamel, Want to be sure I am being spot on
I kinda cringe up when I saw you whacking the base plate to get the mold off of it, I'd be incredibly scared to shatter my mold by that! But hey, you're the professional here ^^
Yu are like Bob Ross I love yur work great job :D There's no mistakes only happy accidents ;)

buen video man saludos chicos
Thanks for the video's.
Does the spray paint on sculpt reduce the detail and texture? I would think even a thin layer would smooth out tone.
No, it's to thin.
Why has this guy only got 900 subs
I have a question. I live in a rural area and have access to hay and pine straw. Can either one of those sub out the Hemp? I love these videos by the way. Thank you very much
hi.whens the next part coming.
So, instead of using compressed air, could you use water to get the clay out? Or would that damage the mold?
Yes water would work, a water pick is great!
Hey ed, I was wondering where can you buy hemp?
Can you do in fiberglass or liquid plastic
Wait. You don't put it in the oven? You just wear it like that?
