Dear John. I'm deaf and love your channel so much. Because when you are telling a story it's very easy to read your lips. More then any other narrator. That's what initially drew me to the channel years ago because I hardly needed the subtitles. But to be honest I really don't like the AI generated subtitles. Would it be possible for you to generate proper subtitling on your channel? I think a lot of poeple like me would appreciate it very much. And thank you for all the great stories you told us. ❤ 😊
I agree. RUclips subtitles can be a mess. I'm not deaf but sometimes I want to clarify what is being said and turn them on. Just like the Show Transcript feature... same thing, messed up sometimes worse. But I do love to watch him perform the stories because he's so into it. I find myself mimicking him during the story. Just part of the fun! 😁
I found you during the pandemic and listened with my daughter who was about 19 at the time. She passed away 2/4/23 and took my world with her. Now listening to you without her makes me feel closer to her. Thank you for staying with us. I’m sad I missed your live show in Michigan. You mean a lot to me and so many more people ❤
I am so sorry to hear that. It is literally the most profoundly painful thing that can happen to a person and I'm really glad to hear that you have been able to find some peace in these videos. 😊
Been here from the beginning, from San Francisco, CA. Was homeless and on drugs, but now I'm housed and clean😂, thanks to you and your stories that helped me through the hardest times of my life.
Good for you, that takes so much mental strenght! I'm on drugs and was about to become homeless next week, but thankfully I got a loan today to pay the missed rent.

Great episode! Very entertaining! About 18 years back I worked with an Englishman who had come to America and out to California back in the 60s. At some point he started panning for gold as a hobby. He never really found anything of significance, but during one trip with a friend he did come across a small nugget about the size of a grown man's pinky fingernail. As they were finishing up for the day, he was loading the vehicle and he heard a metallic click behind him, turned, and his friend was pointing a cocked pistol right at him, and began demanding that piece of gold. For some reason he dared to argue back and finally talked sense into the guy not to shoot him. He never went panning with him again, as he was certain that guy had been hit with some "gold lust" and couldn't handle it. He wore that small gold piece that he had fashioned into a necklace.
"Lafayette French" sounds like the name of an SNL character who wears a beret, has a thin mustache, only eats escargot, and is constantly smoking while holding a baguette.
I'm more worried about French Creole. ;) Spent some time down south, and I'll tell you, talking to my, "English," speaking friends speaking to, "Creole speaking," folk, it's a weird sort of banter. Yep, we took a boat to go shrimping with this dude. I couldn't understand a single word this boat captain said, but my buddy was confident of it, as he was raised in the area. We caught loads of shrimp, and the next day, I'm tired as all Hell, and this Creole fisherman, and my buddy, my buddy's family, and this Creole fisherman's familiy, all sat down and had a mad shrimp grill. Made *loads* of friends, then... I started to understand Creole. It's a *weird* thing.
I'm glad i found this. I'm having a surgery Tuesday and this is the first time I've been distracted from fretting and imagining everything that could possibly go wrong.

My dad used to take us to old closed hidden mines in the woods in northern Ontario from Tory Hill to Bancroft. Even ghost towns like Hadley. The owners of the lands dont allow people on them now due to littering, destruction, disrespect. I treasure those trips in the 70s & early 80s.🇨🇦
@@MsBlairmalcolmAnother Ontarian here! Stratford. I used to love going into disused, abandoned factories, warehouses, train infrastructure, etc. Abandoned places have a strange beauty.
Sooo good. Classic Ballen. I get a little bored with the dramatic modern true crime stories but this one is excellent. Mr. B Pulls you in with his sweet skills of communication and description.
'Gold fever' was a recognised thing - thousands would kill their friends for greed. But how come not one person ever wondered who left a TRAIL leading up to a place "where no one had ever been"?
Deer trails are very common in Canada... I've followed lots in BC, in the forest... sometimes they lead down to water, sometimes they just end abruptly because of vegetation overgrowth. And I guess sometimes they lead to a pot of gold apparently !
So a long standing story has been in my family for years. It would be my Great Great Grandfather who had land out here in Utah. Everyone would confirm that he knew that land and the mountains next to it like the back of his hand. One day riding, he stumbled onto a cave where he found gold. He was able to chip a piece of it away to have tested and it tested extremely high. So obviously excited, he took a few family members with him back out to where he found it, and never could find it again. Story has it he was confident that he was in the right place, but it was just gone. He spent years looking, but never could find it again.
There's a lot of fools gold(pyrite) in Canada. I was a rockhound for years. I can imagine how many died over it.🇨🇦 Noises may have something to do with the Indigenous. It's their land. Many out there.
I was reading the comments to see if anyone else thought of that. Small trails, taking down the tent and rocks, noises and voices in the woods, all seems like Native American/indigenous tribes to me. They were here first. Trying to protect their land, not with violence but with psychological warfare.
2:05 I've encountered a "compulsive trail" like this once... Chilling similarities. I wasn't hunting gold, just wandering. Was visiting a family friend's lake house as a teen, small Wisconsin lake encircled by houses. Was looping around the lake just exploring on a bright summer day, and I see a trail forking off of the lake circumference. It initially looked like a useless trail that forked briefly off a main trail, around an "island" of trees and then merges back with the main trail. The kind of thing you split with a friend "I'll go left, you go right, bet my fork is faster" but you can still see each other thru the "island" and then the useless trail merges back and you are reunited moments later. Y'know what I mean. And I remember this side-trail looked very beautiful and scenic and sun-dappled. And I just think, obviously I gotta see what's down this trail. Turns out I wasn't a "useless fork" and I just wandered straight down this trail away from the lake straight into the woods. The entire time I was pretty exhilarated with wanderlust and curiosity. That impulse of "Ooh what's down here?" carried me very deep into the woods, despite not seeing anything particularly remarkable (was basically a service road) I just keep walking alone, lost track of time. Just aimlessly walking away from all family and civilization and having great fun with it for some reason. After a long while this trail I'm on widens out before me and I see a clearing of tall grass approaching on my left. Something about it gave me pause. And then it hit me: dead silence. My steady gate forward halts instantly. I hadn't slowed for a moment until then in an instant I freeze in place. It's so quiet and I realize all sounds from the lake (was a bustling summer resort community) had faded. It made me realize how far I had gone, I had traveled enough that my last tether to civilization (sound) was gone. And though I was still "high" on this trail's fun vibes I had this strange firm impulse of foreboding: Not One more step forward, turn around RIGHT now, do not get any closer to that tall grass, I have officially gone far enough. I didn't pause and think, Welp, it's getting late I better head back soon, instead it was an instant 180, turn around and leave right now. As if my tether to this world itself was inches away from snapping and I was about to be officially "lost," despite never leaving the clear trail I was on. Like there was a hard tripwire-like Point of No Return I was about to cross. And so I did just that and backtracked eventually made my way back to the lake. Despite this strangeness at the end and the pointlessness of my trip, I was still downright exhilarated by the whole thing for some reason. And I felt a thrill at what seemed like a "close call" that I couldn't really justify. Once I got back I told my brother about the experience and suggested he and I both explore the trail later on. But when I tried to show him the next day... I couldn't find the trailhead. Only years later did it hit me, I had walked so far and for so long, of COURSE the noises of the busy lake community were muffled by the distance waaaay earlier in my wandering than when I stopped! I was so far beyond that point, I was deep into the isolated woods. When I stopped suddenly and snapped out of my wanderlust trance, it wasn't because the sounds of the lake community had faded as I had convinced myself. It was that **ALL SOUNDS** of the woods around me had faded into silence as I mindlessly approached that clearing of tall grass. Like the silencing effect was directly correlated to my forward movement. I don't know what would have happened I had walked even a few feet further that day but I'm very grateful for that that sudden, intense impulse to Turn Around and leave, this instant, right NOW. I can't shake this feeling that my borderline irrational fixation for this trail was me being lured away.... by something that was waiting for me.
You write beautifully. Kinda like you wandering down that trail in your story-- I didn't realize how far I had read into this long post before I went scrolling back up again. You took us on a journey, and it was captivating! As another comment said, you've got the gift of storytelling. ❤
I'm surprised demons aren't part of this legend, especially since Black Jack and his buddy claim to have heard voices going into the woods BEFORE the murder ever took place. I mean, this has "supernatural trap for humans" written all over it.
What's so good about it? Because there are ghosts? Oh yes....very believable, right? Especially when the event occurred almost 200 years ago? (eye roll) Mr. Ballen is excellent with modern TRUE CRIME stuff....I just wish he'd stick more with that and nto do so many of these spooky ghosty fakey stuff to please housewives like you.
It really is a true Talent to be able to tell a story like he does. The enthusiasm, the small breaks between sentences, his hand movements. Great Job as always
Yes- I'm a loyal fan. I served with the 2nd Medical Battalion at Camp Lejeune as a Corpsman in the early 1980's. I did a run that a seal sponsored me at Norfolk on a weekend before we embarked to Gtmo Bay. I ran pretty good but that Seal passed me on the run like I was standing still.. It was a great four years.. All the best Mr. Ballen.
What a guy , nobody ever has nothing negative too say about Mr Ballen and thats a natural miracle, best channel on the strange, dark and mysterious , thank you.

I find it funny that for some reason it seems that around Canada there are a lot of haunted places around areas where gold has been found... Seems like a nice scary story to tell people who are debating whether or not they should go look for some or not, if you don't want people going up and taking gold that you could go get ....😂
These are my favorite kinds of stories you do. I live in my truck in a very woodsy area in SC. Please tell more scary creatures in the woods stories!!!! You're the best!
@beatrizronquillo8857 I'd love to see one, I just want to be able to survive the encounter to tell the tale. I'm on the fence about believing they actually exist. I'm a skeptic in every other way but an unknown and rarely seen animal/hybrid creature is less unlikely than things like God or ghosts.
I know that you ‘be received massive amounts of comments where the writer tells you of a hard time in their lives where depression has taken over them and proceeds to tell you how much your videos helped them so much while they worked through that depression. I'm recovering from a major surgery, 1 week in recovery 🎉 Thank you MrBallen, your stories and podcasts have kept my head up when everything else doesn't come close ❤ hope your family is staying safe in this weather!
If this is true, I suspect all the voices in the wilderness are the many people who died searching for and trying to take the gold. Blackjack's voice was added to the others.
The right move was at first, act like there’s no gold. Go back every night for a week taking as much gold as you can without getting caught. Then once you’re satisfied with your pot, inform the Lafayette guy and take the cut he gives you too. They both right. They went though all the trouble of finding it so make sure you good but that doesn’t mean you can’t turn over the mine to the guy that sent u out. Take millions of gold then leave him the rest
It’s so crazy to see you at almost 10 million subs! I remember watching you on TikTok when you first started, you’ve come a long way sir! Thank you for the years of constant new content and I pray for many many more to follow.
I've heard stories about this myself . I think it's something to do with the high wind in the area . It makes people who aren't from there hear voices that aren't there due to the elevation and the wind from what I've heard .
@@emilyraineer Time and physics have been studied so extensively for over a century that I'm sure there would be some evidence for that. Unless black holes are just cursed places in space and that's the reason physics and time gets f**ked up in there and the real reason is not the curvature of spacetime.
Nothing makes me happier than the fact that you spelled "motherlode" correctly, lol. It's dumb, I know, but I'm always happy to see commonly misspelled or misrepresented English done properly.
6:37 except he said "barrel fulls" of gold. It's "barrels full" of gold. Same as "passersbys" should be said "passersby." Small detail, I know, but important to use the correct plurality. 😉
Are you the type of person that has binged all of Mr B's episodes and want more but really don't like podcasts? Yes! Please go back to making these types of episodes. You are the best story teller of all! I want to see you.
I listen to the podcasts solely for MrBallen lol. I don't like any others. Regardless of the fact I like the podcasts, they're more true crime, not strange dark and mysterious.
@DEPUTYGETSOME Because it’s common sense that finding a huge gold mine will eventually lead to backstabbing and greed. Back in the day, people would just “disappear.” Friends would kill friends because the love of money is the root of all evil.
Frank even killing BlackJack was apart of the curse. it was cursed long before they got there. Sounds like that was out of character for the Frank and he became possessed, just as the Priest did.
It’s not cursed, it’s called people lying to cover up their true motives. Frank wanted the money for himself as did John and the priest. It’s greed that led them to this.
Maybe put a spoiler warning on your post. I wasn’t finished with the video and your comment saying Frank killed BlackJack popped up before I even got 10 minutes in. Kind of ruined it.
@realitybreath4647 well, we know that curses or something of the sort exist because we have record of tragedy or misfortune consistently striking different people when the go to a common place. multiple people who weren't naturally greedy, suddenly turning maliciously greedy wouldn't fall far from that.
To be fair, the Wednesday video was only one new story and just retelling old ones. In fact, I think the Bryce story was just the old story word for word.
Half of what RUclipsrs put out these days are compilations/reposts. RUclips must be incentivizing that shit with more reach/exposure/algorithmic benefit for some irritating reason.
anyone here from Iran? 😉 Your storytelling is truly remarkable. The way you weave intricate details and emotions into every part of your narrative keeps me captivated from start to finish. YOU ROCK!
Billions of dollars of gold in the 1800s! Man that is a LOT of gold! Would be hard to share that discovery lol. A United States $20 Liberty Double Eagle from the 1800s is .9675oz of gold per coin. That was only $20 back then. Now in 2025 the melt on one of those coins is almost $2,700. Billions in the 1800s is an unbelievable amount of gold! Some very lucky guys to stumble upon that! I’m nerding out on this because I’m a coin collector and work at a coin shop. I love coins and history! Coins are like a pause in time!
May I ask, how does one individual go about selling a valuable coin to a collector without having to spend too much money? Such as, it would need to be appraised or have its authenticity proven and rated out of 10 and put in a display case, right? That doesn't all have to be done by the original seller to the collector? The seller would just need to have it documented as authentic, I assume, unless someone goes to a pawn shop.
@@kathymisuraca5047 honestly I would have to know the date and condition and what coin. But if it’s the size of a dime and you got $1,500 that’s way more than the gold melt. So weight wise you did amazing. So I bet you had a rarer key date. Do you remember what the coin was and what date and mint mark?
@@briondalionso there is multiple routes you could go there. I honestly would suggest finding a local coin shop to help you authenticate it. Any good coin shop should help you with that and give you at least an idea of what it’s worth. Now something like hundreds or thousands of coins don’t expect them to do that of course. But a few coins they should have no problem with that. I help people with that all the time. There are definitely a lot of factors when it comes to this. The thing about that gives it value is date, mint mark, and condition which will all show rarity. Some coins can be the lowest condition and not make much of a difference between the value in the best condition. But then some coins can be thousands of dollars difference in just a slight bit better condition. A coin shop can give you around what condition it’s in but no one will have an absolute firm answer for you unless it’s been graded and certified by a coin grading company like PCGS, NGC, or ANACS. There is a standard but the grade you get on the coin is subjective to the professional grading the coin. Because things like eye appeal are factored in that can be a bit subjective. I have known people break the coin out of the grading slab and send it back 5 times until they got the grade they wanted. The grading scale is done from a 1 to a 70. So the grading scale goes like this. The lowest condition possible is a Poor 1 and it goes all the way to a Mint State 70. The scale is Poor 1, Fair 2, About Good 3, Good 4, Good 6, Very Good 8, Very Good 10, Fine 12, Fine 15, Very Fine 20, Very Fine 25, Very Fine 30, Very Fine 35, Extra Fine 40, Extra Fine 45, About Uncirculated 50, About Uncirculated 53, About Uncirculated 55, About Uncirculated 58, and Mint State 60-70. You can get an average value if the coin is not graded and it’s just raw. So I wouldn’t expect to get the full perceived value of the coin because the only way it’s has a more firm value is if it’s certified. The there is no debate on condition. As for selling it that’s a challenge sometimes according to the rarity. Sometimes it’s just worth selling it to a local coin shop because of the hassle for the average person that doesn’t deal with coins daily. But if it’s determined you have a rare coin there are auctions like Heritage Auction and Stacks Bowers that would be the best bet. They do charge a 15-20% fee but you can reach all the high end coin collectors. Now there is always eBay as well which is great for coins. If you don’t have a store they charge a 12.5% fee. Which is a little cheaper. But if you have a super rare coin the first two I mentioned would be ideal. Just more people with a lot of money on the high end auctions. I can try to help you if you have a coin you need to get checked out. I don’t mind at all. You can message me on insta or Tik Tok which is the same as my RUclips name here. Or you can email me at dredgeofrealitydor at google mail. ( sorry don’t know if it will filter me if I put the full email.) Hope that helps.
I prefer true stories to these ghost folk tales, but reading the comments in which people analyze them and discuss small details, as if Mr. B. read a police report not told a legend, is very entertaining. " But how come not one person ever wondered who left a TRAIL leading up to a place "where no one had ever been"?" 🤣
it is asked in comments, and it was explained that deer trails are very common. It led them to the creek, then they followed it upstream.. I grew up in a very heavy forested area, and have seen a lot of game trails.
Its wild to me that a person takes on a job because they think its a great deal, then they decide to try and screw over the person who would be paying them.

I'm pretty sure all the weird things happening - the voices, the rocks and tent disappearing, the forest and cabin burning... it was the natives. They were trying to drive all the white men out. I mean, maybe I'm biased because I don't believe in ghosts, but thinking about history and how much white settlers clashed with natives, it just makes the most sense to me. They were hiding around and observing and then scaring everyone off. I mean I don't know much about Canadian history but I'm sure the white man/native clash that existed in the 1800s in the States was the same throughout North America.
@ Some natives learned english to some degree, I mean how do you think they communicated with each other when it came to creating treaties and whatnot. But also, If they didn't know english, what they were saying could have been something the guy thought he heard since he was freaked out and spiraling over what he just did.
Wow, I’m a big fan of Redacted and have been waiting for a RUclips channel for the podcast! The podcast itself always pulls me into its narratives, so I’m glad the RUclips channel listened to the community and decided to reupload the episodes after briefly deleting them-this time in a much more immersive and polished way. (Yes, I searched for the podcast on RUclips the day it’s released on Spotify😂.) Now my routine is: Saturday = MrBallen on RUclips, Monday = MrBallen Podcast, and Tuesday = Redacted.
Redacted are my fuckin favorite out of everything. I love history, conspiracy theories, and served in the US Army. Oh! Also on Tuesday is Mr Ballen Medical Mysteries. I wouldn't listen on Thursdays because it's shit he's done on his RUclips channel.
@@ConsistentlyInconsistent21 Hey there, thanks for sharing! With your military background and interests, I can see why you’re into Redacted. As for me, I’m not sure if I’m the podcast’s target demographic 😅 As an international student turned immigrant (from China to Canada), I’ve found that there’s no better way to improve my English than by listening to good stories-especially true events told in a compelling storytelling style. Before Redacted, I hadn’t watched many documentaries in this genre, so there’s clearly something special about the podcast. Maybe it’s the narrator’s voice, the story structure, or something else-I’m not sure. I do, however, find myself wishing for similar content about the Chinese government. But, of course, such podcasts exposing corruption or controversies would never be allowed to exist in China😑
I just wish AI wasn’t used. They could’ve hired an artist to do the art for them and gotten a better product. I’m sure the stories are good, but I won’t listen because the AI just feels wrong to me :(

The section from @15:13 to 15:35 is why MrBallen's the best story teller out there. The animated way he tells the story, the gesturing, facial expressions, the way he sounds swept up in the moment of the story he's telling... you can tell he can see the story playing out in his head like a movie as he is telling it. And best of all, it all comes across as 100% genuine... he doesn't use a fake voice to sound creepy and stuff like that. It's just him, telling people a story, with no smoke n mirrors. I LOVE THAT! 🥰

He never went panning with him again, as he was certain that guy had been hit with some "gold lust" and couldn't handle it. He wore that small gold piece that he had fashioned into a necklace.
That's pretty petty. A nugget of that size wouldn't be worth that much.
Should have turned it into a defensive amulet or Gold cross.
"Lafayette French" sounds like the name of an SNL character who wears a beret, has a thin mustache, only eats escargot, and is constantly smoking while holding a baguette.
You my nigga
I had a similar reaction the second he said that name. I thought, "Sheesh. It doesn't get more French than that."

'Gold fever' was a recognised thing - thousands would kill their friends for greed. But how come not one person ever wondered who left a TRAIL leading up to a place "where no one had ever been"?
Uhm? Animals.
Often animals make original trails and then humans use them.
Deer trail. 1-26-25 SU

Or more likely it's just bs folklore with some truths and extra hearsay through the grapevine tossed in
Even though Canada as a country is still young in the picture, but the land is ancient, been here since before man.
You've got the gift of story telling my friend. It had me on the edge of my seat.

Well, gold and greed together creates a perfect storm !
It’s been posted a minute… how you acting like you’ve watched the whole thing?
@DEPUTYGETSOME Because it’s common sense that finding a huge gold mine will eventually lead to backstabbing and greed. Back in the day, people would just “disappear.” Friends would kill friends because the love of money is the root of all evil.
Joke's on you! Haitians have no God!!
Not for everyone in fact some people who get rich don’t let money get in the way of their friendship or true love or even family
Once again..not talking about right now. This is from a long time ago@@eeveeoak3670
Frank even killing BlackJack was apart of the curse. it was cursed long before they got there. Sounds like that was out of character for the Frank and he became possessed, just as the Priest did.
Came here to say this! They heard whispers on the way there! It couldn't have (just) been Blackjack's ghost.

I got 1500 for a gold coin the size of a dime...is that good? Should I have held out?
@kathymisuraca5047 that sounds about right. It's $88 a gram rn
( sorry don’t know if it will filter me if I put the full email.) Hope that helps.

it is asked in comments, and it was explained that deer trails are very common. It led them to the creek, then they followed it upstream.. I grew up in a very heavy forested area, and have seen a lot of game trails.

This is why I never go into the woods without a couple dogs. They notice things wayyyy before I can
I'm pretty sure all the weird things happening - the voices, the rocks and tent disappearing, the forest and cabin burning... it was the natives.
I was expecting them to go openly after the settlers at any given point.
Obviously, ain't no such thing as ghosts.
I was thinking either alive natives or natives had cursed this supposed gold mine
Yeah but why would the speak in English and not in their own language
There's Wartime Stories with Luke as well if you're interested in that also on Mondays
I’m sure the stories are good, but I won’t listen because the AI just feels wrong to me :(
@ Oh, I didn’t realize that! I just assumed there must be real artists involved in the process, but I’m not an expert on the subject by any means. You may check out the podcast, though-I think it’s worth a listen. In fact, I feel like the videos haven’t really caught up to it yet anyway.
Happy to see Mr.Ballen looking healthy and restful 😊😊
The section from @15:13 to 15:35 is why MrBallen's the best story teller out there. The animated way he tells the story, the gesturing, facial expressions, the way he sounds swept up in the moment of the story he's telling... you can tell he can see the story playing out in his head like a movie as he is telling it. And best of all, it all comes across as 100% genuine... he doesn't use a fake voice to sound creepy and stuff like that. It's just him, telling people a story, with no smoke n mirrors. I LOVE THAT! 🥰
I wasn't expecting a Mr.Ballen video today but damn, I'm so glad he did! Needed something to play in the background while I work
He uploads on Saturdays now
Mr Ballen is THE BEST STORYTELLER EVER. His voice, inflections, etc everything is right. 👍🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Having a twinge of phobia? It's OK. It'll pass
Lol, what does your size have anything to do with it? Does that somehow make you more manly? 😂😂😂
Thank you Mr.Ballen have a great and safe weekend, everyone 💛💛
But, Black Jack couldn't have been the only ghost around because he heard the whispers too??!!

I was soo enchanted by the redacted clip that when I saw MrBallen face i thought it was un advert and I was so ready to skip lmao 🤣🤣
This gives me “Treasure of the Sierra Madre” vibes when they go Prospecting for gold, then Dobbs begins losing his mind and talking to himself and seeing shadows etc. before he kills his partner he tells him “I bet you fall asleep before I do” and he tortures him for a couple days.. wild!
Great job Mr.B

Seems like there are quie many stories like this... Makes you wonder, is there a protective curse against greedy hearts ..?
Probably not since the rich elite are succeeding at mining, maybe evil has monopoly even in the spiritual world 😨😱
Thought that, too. Scary story, that alone.
Clear Lake Texas a 70 year old woman and I having been watching you from your beginning.
