Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed his “old friend” Vladimir Putin to Beijing on May 16, 2024, at the start of a two-day state visit by the Russian leader. Xi said relations between the two countries have withstood an international “storm and changes” and set a model for mutual respect and cooperation. Putin’s visit is expected to further boost the “no-limits” partnerships the leaders forged in 2002, just before Russia invaded Ukraine.
