She wrote the lyrics to this one. Gary Valentine laid out the melody and gave it to her saying it was about him getting busted at 19 with his 16 year old girlfriend. So sex offender. Debbie told him she'd come up with lyrics and changed it to be about a prostitute who falls for the cop shes arrested by. So she subverts the norm by making the woman in the song the "offender".

It took me a year and a half to find this album after it was first "released" and while it might have been available in NYC or someplace, I guarantee you none of that "new wave sh*t" was available here in western NC. I'd already purchased "Plastic Letters" before I found "Blondie" and it's still my favorite album of theirs. I spent over a year working out to a 90 minute cassette tape I'd made with "Blondie" on one side and Tom Petty's first record on the other and then another tape that had Graham Parker's first two amazing lps. on it. I never thought that Blondie or Tom would hit the big time and was overjoyed when they did. Graham should have and that's one of the biggest injustices in the history of recorded music! Now, I gotta try to find a video of "Rip Her To Shreds." Yow!

This was the beginning of a myth called Blondie... Longest running Punk Rock band in history probably... But Debbie Harry who nowadays accepts to be called Blondie herself as an honor, started back in 1968 in another band, The Wind in The Willows, a record of the same year can be heard in this tube. 2019 is a great year for Debbie/ Blondie fans, she released "Face It", getting recognition as what she always be, a great poet!

The term "punk rock" was coined in reference to "96 Tears" by "? and the Mysterians" and you can really hear that connection in this early Blondie, Velvet Underground, Johnathan Richmond, etc. It was slowly lost when groups like the Clash drove punk more toward guitar and "new wave" started to become a catch-all for keyboard-oriented sounds.
