Had previous thought it was useless using the command - almost nagging at the dog but the way you’ve explained this makes sense and reckon will improve the messy shit I do now - thanks Pat

I have played this four times already since I am listening while distracted, but I think I need to learn a hell of a lot more about Nepopo

I’ve seen you talk about this before, but I’d forgotten it. Perfect timing for a reminder, as it’s what I’m about to start doing with my pup. Nice 1 Pat. 💪🏼👍🏻

If this works for some dogs that is great, but I can definitely see some dogs learning if they look like they are going to break position sooner, they get rewarded. I prefer to make a sound that gets the dog's attention back on me, and then reward for that attention.

Well, our duration marker (good) has gotten diluted anyway, going to take that opportunity to switch over to this!

Do you have a video on the importance of terminal markers verse only having continuation markers. The gritty info on what is firing in the dogs brain at the point of behavior termination verse always being paid in behavior. I remember seeing it written out on a NePoPo webinar held by Ideal Dog Services a year ago but no longer have access to that information. I’m missing this bit of technical information and it’s almost impossible to find it in endless sea of the internet. I trust you have this missing piece I can put back into my puzzle.

I struggle with this a tiny bit because I want my behavior cues to trigger an action. Followed by generic duration marker (not overused) for stay in behavior, and of course terminal to release.
OR hey, am I just overthinking this? Because everything you say certainly makes sense.

It requires a loading phase. It you just change to it now then you may see your dog get kind of confused or retry the behaviour because it’s current understanding is only as a call to action. But it’ll get it i the long run. But you have to do the cost benefit analysis. For a different dog this is how I would start.

Pat, you mention the dog must take your reward, if they choose not to, what is the consequence? Are you just removing any further chance of that type of reinforcement for the day or session(how do you manage this with a puppy that needs the caloric intake for the day to grow)? An example, at Bunnings doing some socialisation with my 13 week old puppy. I had thought I'd charged the clicker quite well and up until this event it had worked 100% of the time in lots of environments beautifully. I feel I failed the dog as the motivation obviously outweighed the reward in this circumstance, too much, too soon. A person in a red shirt approached(I swear when they see a dog they block all other inputs and dog is life), Puppy looked at said person, I clicked, they bent over at that exact moment and like a 8 year old on their birthday screamed 'pupppppppy'. At this moment I realised I was f@#$ed, although they nearly had my dog off the ground cradling it like a baby, I said 'please dont pat' and they released my dog with a look like Id just killed theirs.

Haha yeah that sounds annoying! But don’t worry too much. Good socialisation is way more important for that little dog right now than loading a clicker.
