I played pirate 101. You have to pay to get to areas quicker in it then wizard 101
The biggest L was getting school of death in the quiz and then finding out your school was missing and you had to pay to unlock it

technically, no. since the death school was in the commons (behind the waterfall) you could just teleport to a friend who could access the place and go there, place a marker, and go back and forth.

Yeah the truth is thousands of people are still active players. It gets tons of updates all the time. Even I'd it's not what players want and it pisses a hunch if em off. The community is very active as well with many discord servers just for this game. It's just not talkes about enough on mainstream media anymore.
Also yes the memberships or pay by area system sucks but honestly membership is great for people who play often.
I ligit got a membership last month. 💕still one of the best games out there.

@David Leslie yes yes all of that is the why I mentioned their changes fo piss a lot of people off. And by servers I meant discord servers. Mainly fan made and run. But yes it is turning into a bigger cash grab that It once was. Like legend says they are more focused on their mobile games which idek how successful that's going.

Exactly. I feel you. I felt like my parents were sacrificing a lot and then just askung for a simple pack of cards felt like it was BETTER then dinner.
I need to vent out some stuff related to this game:
I used to play the game religiously back in the day and have more than 2k hours in it sank on it. The game is fun at the start and it used to be fun until you noticed how predatory the microtransactions are. Apart from being a Pay-2-play model with a small f2p section, the game has microtransactions in almost every corner. You can play the game without spending a single dime but once you hit the endgame you start to notice the need to spend an extra 10$ in order to get gear (mostly wands) through glorified loot boxes. You can feel this even worst if you are attempting to PVP. Also, the inclusion of spells via their pack system (loot boxes) is quite unfair due to them becoming exclusive through packs for a limited amount of time. Usually, they get released to the after a while to get them via crafting or drops but even that can take months for the dev to make them available. You think you would get an equal footing as everyone for paying a membership like most MMOs but once you learn how the endgame really works it's really sad to know that if you want to stay relevant to the PVP meta and PVE you need to spend on those microtransactions. And do not get me started with the fact that they lock the vital role of tanking behind a loot box system, and before some tell me that's what ice wizards are for, don't lie to yourself because you know well that you have to whale in order to get one of the only Tanking gear in the game in order to fulfill that *cough* Jade.
Speaking of endgame you'd think the game would have multiple mayor updates to increase the content for players that have spent money on subscriptions but all you get a minors updates with some of the content hidden behind extra paywalls (gauntlets/house dungeons) and then later on at the end of the year you get Big mayor update which raises the level cap and continues the story.
At this point the only reason the game is still afloat is due to the massive amount of whalers in the game that spend around 100$ on packs every time a new pack gets released.
I love this game and it has been a big part of my childhood but if this keeps up i don't think the game will survive another decade.
Tl;dr:
Fun game, lots of microtransactions that affect endgame, lacks of updates for a P2P game.

@@azi-keil9574 At that point your better off farming waterworks and then keep going until you reach darkmoor to farm your level 100 gear.
You can start playing the game entirely for free after doing daily trivia for 80 days on 3 accounts (and continuing to do so afterwards, of course). It’s a lot of work, but it’s definitely possible. In fact, I do it myself and yeah, it’s great. If you want, you can even have more accounts to sink crowns into packs. Or you could get into the empower trading economy, which allows you to buy packs with empower trading cards. They’re expensive on the bazaar, but once you get to Grizzleheim it’s pretty easy to farm for gold. Not to mention you can also buy membership cards with empowers. To get into empower trading, I suggest looking into Gamma’s Trading Post. It’s a wonderful Discord server that really makes it easy to get started.
@@azi-keil9574 Your crit becomes less the more you level so you really shouldn't focus on crit until your at the 100's, its a weird mechanic but each time u level ur crit takes more crit points to reach 100%. You can have 100% crit in storm at lvl 100 and have less than 100% at 130 with the same gear cuz of that.
DragonMaddness yeah it seems weird, but it’s true, waterworks is basically the best for that whole entire stretch. there are sets of crafted gear from zafaria to azteca that are somewhat decent, but don’t give universal resist. I highly recommend the crafted boots, though, as they give a lot of crit block, especially the ones in Azteca. Hades gear can be worth it, but it’s at level 90. Just stick with waterworks gear, get the crafted boots, and if you really wanna swap out with something else, feel free to do so.
I still play Wiz101, but man do i agree with this. I hate that there is literally years between any significant new content, yet there is a new pack or bundle or mount every other week. And the fact that all the recent spells are behind paywalls- at least until they become craftable over a year later- is silly to me. Don't even get me STARTED on spellements, which can practically only be obtained via pack opening, which is disgusting now that it's not just spell upgrades, but ACTUAL spells themselves. Want a 4 pip aoe for death? Just open god knows how many packs to get 35 spellements when you're not even guarenteed ONE per pack. I often get 0. And that's just the weakest form of the spell.
But with all of its flaws, I still play the game. Despite all of my complaints, I still play the game. Why? I'm not even sure. Nostalgia maybe? Because I don't want all the money I've poured into it to be wasted? Because it's the only card based MMO out there quite like this? Part of me wishes the community would stop playing for a short while so KI would not take us for granted and treat us and the game better, or perhaps there be a major competitor. I don't know. But the microtransactions are for sure out of hand, especially in contrast to the lack of new content.
I remember when I used to play this game. Because I was like very young, I'd always make a new account cause I forgot the password. I think I was like 6 or 8. I think I stopped cause I forgot the about the game. I never made it far enough to only pay to progress
This is kinda what happened to me! I played the game for about six months on someone else's account, then like two years later I remebered the game and made my own account. I only even got to level 8...

This game was my childhood and it has a special place in my heart, but I've never been able to pass the lvl 32 because my parents didn't like the idea to pay for a game like that lol. I'll wait as u did to pay and let the nostalgia kill my laptop.

Hot take: Pirate 101 was better than Wizard 101. It had better graphics, a more engaging and creative storyline, a more unique fighting system, a more varied class system, and more things that you could do and explore without having to pay.

Agreed. For as much as I love Wizard101, Pirate101 did do a lot of things better. The only thing that stops me from recommending it is the lack of updates for so many years.

i really loved the game but because of the payment to get to other places i stopped playing ,

2010 to 2013 on this game was the best. All the memories with people I met on there were what made it special for me, I had a friend in real life that showed me Wizard101, and I was addicted ever since I would wake up early just to play and lvl up and mess around in the commons talking with people and their immature antics. But after awhile people stopped logging on and I guess most of us grew up so I quit wizard101 in 2014
Though I’ve come back this year playing off and on as a storm wizard anyway, this game was a big part of my childhood, got me through 3 horrible years of my life, and one of the only things that gave me comfort.

Iirc the reason why things have quieted down a lot could probably be because the main writer(?) of the game left the company to go work on his own stuff, which ended up leaving Kingsisle to go all over the place with Wizards and pretty much ditch Pirates altogether. (i played it and it was fun for awhile, but they didn't get much love in the update department afaik. it's sad.)
The best part is when you log in after school on a Friday evening and you realize that all your starred online friends are ..online!

Ah yes, wizard 101. It was definitely one of the first games I remember playing growing up with my brother and we would take turns on both our accounts. This makes me really want to just download it and go see if my old account still exists. That would be lovely.
my sister found a glitch in which you could enter a blocked off area and would show off. they realized that people would share cards to get into this area (even though it wasnt difficult, like you just had to enter from a certain angle) and began a grift that made them super rich in-game.
they would say "if you give me X i'll show you how to get here"
and then the other player would send my sister the thing, and my sister would block their account and disappear. that way NO ONE ELSE would be able to do the same grift.
they were seven. i think this says more about them than almost anything else in their life.

Maaaaan, I used to love this game. I made multiple accounts and had grinded hours upon hours for gear and titles.
I tried to return recently, but the past few years Kingisle had experimented with pay to win mechanics and now the game is flooded with cash-grabby features. Pvp is next to impossible unless you plan on spending a TON of money.
Packs aren't worth it anymore, since the RNG is absolutely horrendous. Leveling gets incredibly frustrating after reaching 50, and if you plan on playing solo... good luck.
I think my biggest complaint with this game is the fact that despite how much money they leeched off of the playerbase for years, the character models are still outdated.
The game is still alive and doing great with between 10-20k players and some big youtubers like BlazeLifehammer.
I doubt it's just that many players. It must be at least a million otherwise they woildnt be able to afford operations till now

Weyard Wiz usually when I play during the day, almost the first page of realms is full, idk how many players one can hold, but I assume it's a good bit of players.
@@Ghoul181 yep and also wizard101 is so vast that people are dispersed everywhere. It makes perfect sense why some areas are empty while others full. There are tons of activities in the game
@@WeyardWiz On peak times during the weekend I see the first page being full and 2-3 realms of the second page too. If we assume each realm can hold 2000 players that would be 9 realms x 2000 = 18 000 and let's say there are 7k more players in all the other realms combined that's 20k. But obviously I might be wrong and a full realm could hold even 5 or 10k so we'd never know exactly.
This video hit me super hard. I played the original version of Wizard101 back in like 2009-2010 when I was little with my friends. I got to around level 60 on a Life wizard (the healer class being the hardest because they had the least amount of attack spells). I remember loving the game's story a lot and hating that progression for it is locked behind a paywall because my family wasn't really keen on games like this with monthly subscriptions (my older brother had sunk a lot into WoW). I ended up dropping it because of said monthly payment and also my time was being taken up a lot more by school and friends.
Years later, as in like, 2019, I redownloaded it and played again to find everything updated and different. Rediscovery was a huge part of why I loved it the second time. A sale on the membership was another reason. I remember going on the website and the site explaining that membership prices were down because they were going out of business slowly, but I have no clue if that's true currently. Wizard101 is the game that got me to Affiliate on Twitch, and I will forever be grateful for the place it holds in my childhood heart, but it no longer holds my interest as much as it did. The nostalgia the game brought me was welcomed and appreciated yet did not last as long as I wanted it to. It also sucks massively that a lot of the cooler cosmetics and items like houses, furniture, pets, etc. are all only accessible via Crown purchases. (That didn't stop younger me from failing to spend my Hanukkah money on it, though!)
Thanks for making this video! It was wonderful to watch and allowed me to relive W101's nostalgic aspect again.

Nah nah nah. Clearly, since you can see the box art for the structure decks... Those are the duplicate commons that were pulled in needing to buy 3 boxes to get a playable deck. I even bet that Negative went through, and pulled out good duplicate commons. Just in case.

Runescape was a real ass game, I also checked this game out but only because it was being spammed on TV lol. I always feel bad for people who made this there main mmo when there was shit like runescape in existence.
I was the kid who always made my color scheme the opposite of what my class was. I'm a pyromancer? Ice blue robes. Necromancer? Rainbow robes!
Side note: this was before the pride movement and people automatically assuming you were gay is your character was too colorful.

I was one of the lucky kids whose parent actually played the game and I was able to play on his account and he paid to unlock the areas (all the way up to lvl 50 when at the time that was the max). We always bought the area with crowns and never the membership and I've been able to enjoy the game for years on and off over time. I appreciate my dad every time I think about the game since it wasn't free to play but I was lucky enough to be able too.

They should replace school with this game. I grew up on it and it helped me socialize with people, learn mathematical concepts (critical, accuracy percentages, and more), learn how to organize things, navigate, plan things, etc. It was overall such a good game for cognitive development. I freaking miss it now :(

i remember i was 14 when i started playing wizard101 and i remember when you faced malistair for the first time to beat him, then once you were done with that then you went on fighting other enemies, i never finished wizard 101 because my acc got hacked but i'll always remember the fun times i had on it, it will always and still is my favorite mmo game of all time.

I recently got back into playing it and the best part is all the players are the same people who were playing it with me 10 years ago - now young adults playing for nostalgia to escape quarantine. Beautiful

I remember playing Wizard 101 when I was younger :P I didn't rlly get that far in the game because I kept making new accounts tho ;-; I enjoyed the game alot, but I didn't realize until now that u had to buy a membership to continue the story-- I'm surprised to see ppl r still talking about it O.o

I can summzarize the biggest part of what happened to this game, they put a paywall in the game right after the tutorial and the game design while iconic is super outdated and with the people they still have paying them you'd think they'd revamp the game so it doesn't look like it is a vista windows game... not to mention a lot of the voice acting could be better for what it is

When I was little and had no computer I used to go into my dad's room and me and my sister each had a wizard and we would play it on the bed next to my dad. They are some of my fondest memories.

I remember the quest where Penny Dreadful went off on her own to solve a mystery, & I went after her but couldn't complete the quest because I had to pay for the area. I just stopped playing after that...

Once I hit that wall in Wizard101 that has you pay for the next zones, I chose to grind for the crowns as much as I could. It took A LOT of time, but I was finally able to buy another zone. It was very satisfying, and about halfway through my mom blessed me with a prepaid card lmao. I recently got back into the game since we’ve been in quarantine, and now I can buy my own prepaid cards if I want to. I’m currently in Grizzleheim, and I want to go to Mooshu next 😄
I still play it! Its great they update a lot and have some pretty cool spells. The highest level now is 130 i think.
Fun fact: That specific trailer is what made me start playing Wizard101. I don't think I minded the difference in graphics, especially since I was 9 at the time.

I still play on occasion. I’m currently a lvl 59 necromancer. I still find it fun to this day.
I mean because I didn’t spend any money I had to hang around in Triton Avenue for years just farming the Kraken. Didn’t help that everyone else was also huddled there too, wanting to battle but not wanting to be in the first circle.
i played this with my sibling and friends as a kid and loved it. i actually had gotten to what was basically the free to play level cap of 15, and actually had been money grinding to buy one of the school houses you could get with gold. got some stuff through the auction house n all that. aaaaand then we moved, we ditched the dino computer the game was on, i lost my account, and i havent bothered to get it back or buy a subscription for it again. if they literally made it entirely free to play, maybe i would have given it more of a chance.
