I LOVE HER SO MUCH!!! In the 90s I heard her for the first time. These songs got me through so many hard times. Check out Little Girl Blue, Kozmic Blues, and her Monteray Pop "Ball and Chain" performance... that was the 1st time she was on a huge stage and it set her off into stardom... I so so wish she had lived on... What did we MISS out on???
she did the same thing with "Me and Bobby McGee" and "Little Girl Blue"... "Piece of my Heart" was written by Dolly Parton I think.... So many amazing songs she did... so many different ways she sung... but she was always so raw and true... she suffered a lot and was so vulnerable...
JJ's other-worldly talent is simply unmatched. There have been lots of really good singers (both living and dead), many of whom will make you cry. But you will never *anything* like her (and woe any singer that tries). She provokes a physical response -- I get a tingling sensation in the front part of my brain that I get from no-one else. Heard her sing this thousands of times, and it still gets me. She has many more -- suggest you check out "turtle blues" and "misery 'n".
This is my first time watching one of your videos! I'm impressed you have heard Summertime before. It was written in 1934 by George Gershwin! Good job.😊
Many people from many walks of life all think of Janis' version of the song as the definitive one. She was just that good. My favorite song of hers is a song called a Woman Left Lonely. It's worth a listen or hundred.
Janis Joplin makes the song her own as she always does, but her version changes up the arrangement as part of its psychedelic overhaul of the tune. "Summertime" was written by George Gershwin in 1934 as part of "Porgy & Bess" and has been recorded thousands of times in the decades since. According to Guinness World Records, "Summertime" holds the world record as the most recorded song in history, with a total number of recorded versions of 67,591 in 2017. The list of artists who have covered the song also includes Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Mahalia Jackson, Sam Cooke, The Marcels, Herbie Mann, Ricky Nelson, Billy Stewart, Big Mama Thorton, and Sublime (as "Doin' Time"). I think the classic pop version of "Summertime" is the one by Sam Cooke. But the Billy Stewart version from 1966 resounds with a ferocious groove, blasting horns, and rapid fire scat singing like you won't believe. Check it out too.
Please consider reacting to one of her neglected sleepers: "Farewell Song" on the album "Live at Winterland '68" by Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin.
Love you reaction. I really am amazed by her singing of this. You should react to the live Madison Square Garden performance of Since I 've Been Loving You... Led Zeppelin
Thank you for thoughtful reaction and analysis of this amazing artist. I would like to recommend a live performance by Janis that is top-tier. The name of the song is "Try (just a little bit harder)"Here is the link if your interested:ruclips.net/video/_ICKC_Oeswg/видео.html
Yeah, after her death, just about everyone with a piece of tape or film of her live concerts tried to cash in (record labels releasing "live" albums included). Some of those performances were gems, but many of them were sub-par (bad audio equipment, her voice being strained at the end of a tour or long set, etc.). The original album releases and television performances tend to be her best and reflect the takes she wanted to get across. This band had "funk" overtones.
Genre??? Humanity ❤😊 I've got a song for you 🤔 Pearl album was released after her death !! A song was added to complete the album.. Song is Mercedes Benz ❤️❤️ Technical difficulties at the studio 🎙️!! So Janis is goofing off 🤷 .A slice of her personality and just living the life 😉🥃🥃 R.I.P. Janis 🙏❤️
I agree with Frank Zappa that genre is a marketing concept and not so much a musical one. If you want to think where I think this lands, it's blues of the S.F. psychedelic sub variety but again it's not really more than a convenience at best.
you got the wrong version of janis singing 'Summertime' ' and ball of chain' both are live versions that are far superior than the studio version. The 'Ball and Chain' version at the 'Monteray Pop Festival' is far superior, and Mama Cass of the Mama's and the Papa's is in the audience, she was a big fan and friend of Janis. You should also hear 'Mama Cass in Califorbia Dreamin 'by the Mama's and the Papa's.
I like this a lot but I prefer her version with Big Brother and the Holding Company: studio: ruclips.net/video/ZC_Ghf3OPnw/видео.html and live: ruclips.net/video/N9E6wwpekyk/видео.html
Janis could not be put in a box...She was one of a kind!

Janis was an incredible talent and sadly part of the "27 Club"

The best woman singer🤘
The absolute best performance of this song by anyone
The intro is the fugue from Prelude and Fugue in C minor by J.S. Bach, BWV847.

Texas finest 👌 RIP my Janis ❤
Joplin was a Rock n Roll Queen. Period. Fuk worrying about genre.
This is the blues babe! Great song!
Poor, Leroy with the red bow. Makes me think of something I would do. Glad you got to hear Janis.

Love Janis forever best femeale singuer haver ❤😂
Please check out Kozmic Blues by Janis. That song is EPIC!
Back in 69 when we were listening, it was called acid rock.
According to Janis in interviews ..she referred to style/genre as slow country blues, and rock.
The version from the album "Cheap Thrills" is (IMHO) a hundred times better.
Agree.
Love your dog!
Have
You ever seen Janice Joplin at the Monterey pop festival Singing ball and chain fucking fantastic
JJ had about 3 voices she sang with and you never knew which one she was going to be using, or maybe all 3!
Mercedes Benz by Janis is one of my favs from her its only like 1:30 long though
Also omg you need to do a live reaction..... do either CRYBABY or Try
Please consider reacting to one of her neglected sleepers: "Farewell Song" on the album "Live at Winterland '68" by Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin.
Baroque Blues? Trying to throw a classical feel onto a blues standard. I don't know who arranged this version, but it all comes down to Janis.

There are only TWO genres…bad and good.

Janis arranged the music herself; so you can call it Janis style
It is blues jazz and eastern music!!!

I always thought the instrumentals gave circus vibes, like the start, the genre is rock.. but idk its just really good
Ummmm…its the blues
Do you ever react to guitar solos?

Kate Bush weathering heights
More a little bluesy. This sounds different from what I heard on their album.
