In Sting's own words, his most "maligned and misunderstood album." His most brilliant album. Pure genius. The themes of the sea and loss and grief running throughout the album are so powerful.

I don't know if I'd call it the best, because I love "Nothing Like the Sun" so much, but on the other hand, as a concept album, it must be one of the best concept albums ever made. "Soul Cages" is Sting's masterpiece. It is a lasting tribute to Newcastle's history, a lament for it's ruined shipbuilding and fishing industries (and the people who worked in those industries), a memorial for all the lives lost at sea over centuries (while fishing or in service of the Royal Navy), and a book of tales about the struggles and suffering of people who lived and worked while their, previously indispensable, skills and trades were becoming useless fast, in this ever changing world. This album is a timeless classic.

To add to this commentary on bridges (or middle 8s as Macca might call them), the best bridges do two things: come out of nowhere (even though you know they’re coming structure wise) and also fit perfectly into the landscape of the song. Much like a road bridge does.

I adore this song--the mythic poetry, the hard-driving rock that feels very Police-like, Sting's thicker-than-usual Geordie accent during what sounds like a folktale.... But what gets me, what really hits me hard, is the end, where he reprises the chorus from "Island of Souls," bringing this father-son tale full circle and letting Billy save his father, if only in his heart's dreams. I lost my mother only a couple of years before Sting lost his parents in quick succession, and I always identified strongly with the grief/broken relationship themes both "Nothing Like the Sun" and "Soul Cages." And when I hear the music in this call back to "Island of Souls," I never fail to tear up. It's positively cathartic.
Sorry to go on, it's just... I love Sting as artist and a writer so skillful at communicating insight and emotion.

In the early 90s I was a young heavy metal fan, but 80s radio exposure led to my fondness of Tears for Fears, The Police, etc. The Soul Cages somehow landed in my cassette collection, I became fascinated with the poetry and musical textures. Fast forward a few years and my father, whose alcoholism prevented us from having a functional relationship, passed from a long and painful experience with cancer. I say 'experience' because I don't think he put energy into fighting it. Fast forward many more years, as a father myself, this album now has more relevance than ever. I not only mourn my own father, but I mourn myself for my sons and what they'll experience once I'm gone. Like a lightning bolt striking my core:
And he dreamed of the ship on the sea
It would carry his father and he
To a place they could never be found
To a place far away from this town
    A Newcastle ship without coals
They would sail to the island of souls

    A boy child is locked in the Fisherman's yard;
a bloodless moon where the oceans died.
A shoal of night stars hang fire in the nets,
and the chaos of cages where the crayfish lie...
Where is the Fisherman, where is the goat?
Where is the Keeper in his carrion coat?
Eclipse on the moon when the dark bird flies.
Where is the child with his father's eyes?
    There are the soul cages...
    These are the soul cages...
He's the king of the Ninth World,
the twisted son of the fog bell's toll.
In each and every lobster cage,
    a tortured human soul...
These are the souls of broken factories,
subject slaves of a broken crown,
the dead accounting of old guilty promises.
These are the souls of the broken town...
    These are the soul cages...
    These are the soul cages...
    These are the soul cages...
    These are the soul cages...
"I have a wager," the brave child spoke.
The Fisherman laughed, though disturbed at the joke.
"You will drink what I drink, but you must equal me.
If the drink leaves me standing, a soul shall go free.
    "I have here a cask of the most magical wine;
a vintage that blessed every ship in the line.
It's wrung from the blood of the sailors who died,
young white bodies adrift in the tide."
"What's in it for me, my pretty young thing?
Why should I whistle when the caged bird sings?
If you lose a wager with the King of the Sea,
you'll spend the rest of forever in the cage with me."
    These are the soul cages...
    These are the soul cages...
    These are the soul cages...
    These are the soul cages...
A body lies open in the Fisherman's yard,
like the side of a ship where the iceberg rips.
One less soul in the soul cages.
One last curse on the Fisherman's lips.
    These are the soul cages...
    These are the soul cages...
    These are the soul cages...
    These are the soul cages...
    And he dreamed of the ship on the sea;
it would carry his father and he
to a place they could never be found,
to a place far away from this town.
    A Newcastle ship without coals.

Happy 30 for this beautiful album!. for me it has a very special meaning since my father passed away months later after it was released..i came to understand and shared what was the feeling behind the whole record...besides personal reasons also it's the first album with our Dominic Miller (i'm from Argentina) and it's a great proud for us that he was in the best band that Sting has assembled

I know the album by heart but I had never seen this video before. It's intriguing we never get to see Dominic's face here (as opposed to Manu's), and not quite sure who the girl is.
The part that starts at 4:17 ('Island of Souls' reprise) is really haunting.

I dont understand why people dont mention his wonderful solo guitar piece on this albulmmn.. Its brilliant ! ! ! I could just listen to his guitar work which he has written for hours. I wish that he would produce more. I am looking forward to his new albulmn. I am sorry, but noone mentions his music skills in the production of music he composes just on his guitar. The man is a poet,,with. and without songs. 🎶🎵🎵

There was a short clip of the cranes on the river Tyne where I was born and could see the cranes from my bedroom window in Walker. I saw a tiny snippet of 'Goliath', the largest of the cranes. This brought back magic memories for me. sadly, all of those houses have made way to more modern houses. The shipyards have long gone. I lived only a very short distance from Sting's home as an adult in Wallsend and always admired him and his music. I doubt if there was ever a band who did not play a police song at that time and Sting's influence on music is probably one of the best times of my life (71). Thank you Sting.

Finally, a good version of the video. Thanks Sting! Say hi to Dom, from a producer of his solo gig at the Chopin theater in Chicago, June, 2013 P.S. Thanks for allowing him to do it right after your gig at Ravinia! Truly appreciate it. It was epic and historic.

Just rediscovered this beautiful piece of music. I am experiencing the love denied me by my absent father through the love I have for my own three sons. This song speaks to that ever-void in my heart that only art can reach. Good stuff Sting. I once thought I could write songs like this. Best left to a man who can and has. Respect.
