The finer grit sandpapers, 2,000, 3,000, etc. are always available in auto part stores, at least in the U.S. They are used for finishing of auto paint jobs. I would guess they are available in other countries, as well. I know cars get painted everywhere.
Merci beaucoup! I’ve been looking for ages for an accessible fore edge foil tutorial as well as overall bookbinding. Your dedication to going an extra step to actually create this in English is absolutely amazing! Thank you again! 💜
Hairspray has acid in it so that means it will slowly break down the paper over the decades. I find that if you water down PVA glue and use it for your first layer that it is easier. Still new to the technique so you may want to experiment.
Hairspray has acid in it. I found someone who uses watered down PVA glue on their first layer of foil. Tired it myself and while I haven’t worked out all the kinks it does work.
I see what a culture stands behind this 12 minutes video... Beauty, accuracy, style, technique, appreciation of a book as a value etc, etc, etc... Amazing. Stunning tone of voice by the way. Thank you.
you make difficult bookbinding techniques so approachable with your thorough explanations and creativity with materials- I will definitely be trying this one out!
Peanuts. I can't seem to find the links to the videos that you said helped you. You are right that it isn't up to Martin Frost standards but I doubt that anybody else is. This is certainly an interesting technique and I think is much more suited to folks doing this as a hobby (like me) than the full blown professional methods involving a lot of relatively expensive eguipment. I'm looking forward to your next video.
Hi Lou. That is a nice little video. Have we met... perhaps at one of my many masterclasses in the States, Canada or even Venice, Amsterdam, Berlin or Copenhagen?.. Keep up the good work.... Martin Frost (foredgefrost)
Doing it with that added piece would allow you to get just the text block between the two pieces so that you could do older hardcover books without possibly straining the binding.
Bonjour.
How on earth did you gild your books?! 😅 I’ve used all the brands and techniques you’ve suggested and I’ve just ended up with burnt foil stuck to my mini iron. Even on the lowest setting and turned off. Help!
Heat transfer is the key word.. cant get any stuck on your iron if the heat side is up. Usually it wont even be golden on that side. Youre using the wrong foil
Peanuts 🥜 I’m ready to brave gilding my foredge paintings. I had a first disaster out attempt with gold foil on a humid day. That heat activated foil sounds great! What was the brand name? Do you have a li m to their site?
How long does the gold leafing stay? I once received a diary with gold leafing on the edges and the gold came off every time I stroked its edges with my finger
I've used this method and what I do is I take a mechanic towel. They're the large blue towels that are disposable. They don't leave any particles behind. I will swipe the edges and then shake the edges out. See if it's the desired color and if not I'll hit it again with spray paint.
it should work if you use clamps and wood pieces to hold togethet the actual paper only (smaller wood pieces that the book paper, so you don't damage the cover)
Can I know more about how you used beeswax? My heat foil doesn't transfer under the heat of my home, so does wax help it to transfer better? Also what part of the process is it used for?
@@ShylockedHerArt after transfer. Not before. What foil are you using. Use we are memory keeper foil. Press the book without book boards and sand 1mm. Till its nice and shiny. Wipe the dust off. Then apply heat foil. Then use bee wax and polish edge with soft cloth.
@@gyatak200 Thank you for getting back and for the link! I am using imitation heat foil available locally (Craftangles heat foil). The memory keepers foil is very expensive here. I began to use a bit of sizing glue and it worked well. The foil just crinkles up under the plastic protective cover and does not transfer if I use heat. but it sticks on if I use glue. I would still like to figure this out though. Also, I tried to apply a little wax and wipe with a cloth after I transferred the foil to the edges, but that only seems to dull the gild and not burnish. Is there something I am doing wrong here? What is the cloth material that you used?
It's really tricky to find a good fore-edge tutorial. You explained it simply and clearly- thank you!
When you accidentally said pepper instead of paper and showed the little pepper for a split second I laughed out loud 🤣 I love that type of humor
the hairspray tip is genius

In stores that sell resins, you can find up to 5000 grain

Brilliant video! Great channel! Thank you so much for sharing. You got yourself a new subscriber :-)
Bravo. La laque a cheveux est obligatoire pour tenir l'or ? La colle pva est elle mieux ?
mam your hands are very pretty, the manicure is amazing...
There are so many books I never buy because their so ugly on the outside😭😫 so this mini series is amazing

Aurais tu une idée pour mettre l'or sur un livre dont la Edge est arrondie? Si je mets l'or avant d'arrondir je perds en qualité
Alternative of hair spray?

Cómo se llama ese papel dorado
How long do you sand each grit for? How do you know when to switch grades? Peanuts.

I think she used "We r memory keepers" gold foil
Could a pyrography tool with a broad point attached to it be used to do the foil transfer?
Unfortunately it is too hot 😔 even on the lowest setting
@@extracozydiyOkay. Thanks!
Could I do fore edge painting underneath a regular sprayed edge? Or does it have to be a gold foil edge?

please please please show us how you made your diy book press!

I saw someone gild their pages with just gold spray paint, which might be easier.

If i want to spray-paint the edges, do I follow the same steps but instead of foil paper spray-paint it? Will the result work?
@@extracozydiy Ooohhh :((( Thanks so much! 🤗. Do you have any suggestion on a way to paint the edges with good results?
I’m doing this to a bible as a gift, since the pages are really thin, do I still have to sand it?
I also want to do a Bible. Did you end up sending a ton?
Is there a way to do the gold foil edges on hardback books? If I don't want to take it apart and keep the original cover?
it should work if you use clamps and wood pieces to hold togethet the actual paper only (smaller wood pieces that the book paper, so you don't damage the cover)
Do you think this work with gouache??
I went with water colour in the end. I have found that the foil doesn’t stick, except for in a few lines
I used pure bee wax on foiling. I hoping it won't flake. why did you draw before guiding? I m unsure I should do it before or after.
Can I know more about how you used beeswax? My heat foil doesn't transfer under the heat of my home, so does wax help it to transfer better? Also what part of the process is it used for?
