More and more spiritual seekers need to hear this - you need to have a healthy self in order to transcend the self. I felt this intuitively and so initiated psychotherapeutic work, parts work, shadow work along with practicing meditation. Incidentally it's not just in the west. I am from India and in fact here we are more prone to bypassing our trauma related issues by turning to Advaita or non-dual teachings. In fact I am looked down upon in spiritual circles as someone who is deficient as I feel the need for psychology education and psychotherapy. 😅

BRO... I am right here with you. I've explored alot and have experienced various states of consciousness including non-duality. At that time for me it was simply a bypassing survival mechanism because if I were to have been in my body at that time, without the tools that I have now, I don't know what would have happened to me. I have also experienced being purely in the light, with God, and how that was also a form of abandonment - and how my shame could be re-triggered in that state - which is a sign that further healing work had to be done. Sadly most are not ever even really able to experience these states so can't really fathom why they are healthy or not in terms of what we need to do to feel whole. Healing, and releasing what is trapped in your heart, it is a process. The only way out is through, there is no easy way. The key thing you are talking about is self abandonment, which sadly people don't realize is what they are doing as much as they are abandoning themselves into their vices etc. Right now I'm seeing how to be healthy is to detangle from relations that lack boundaries from our end, ESPECIALLY with parents, family, etc, which is not easy to do when often those relationships are defined by a lack of the boundaries we need the most.

My view of this video as it is of so many videos posted on the Internet is that this is part of an ongoing process of inquiry. I always hold my judgment and reserve about any point of view because speakers and teachers continue to go through a process of evolution and their views are subject to change and refinement. Unless they are simply parroting the words of someone else (which happens) everyone who tries to teach on RUclips is basically sharing what has worked for them (so far) Since "your mileage may vary," one should always hold with any teacher says lightly. Currently trauma informed is the latest trend, and I have to wonder in the next few decades, whether they will look back and critique things about trauma and treatment just as we have looked back and critique other types of treatment and self development. As always, it is best to reserve judgment and continue to inquire.

Sometimes when I go to the core of my pains and sufferings I realize it’s because of love. And a little past that it’s because I haven’t noticed, appreciated, and accepted that lovely loving part of myself as a part of who I am despite it having caused me pain. Then when I do this I have a brand new perspective of my pain and suffering and it doesn’t hurt so much anymore. Truly at the core of personal suffering (not always the environmental or inflicted pain from others) there is this Uber sweet ball of bliss that is me. It’s little me so sweet and innocent and kind. Can’t help but to love that even if it’s not perfect in others eyes.

Non-duality is the spiritual get-rich-quick scheme. One solution for everything, just a quick shift into freedom and all is good. But nothing in reality works like that. Our brains don't work like that. Change is slow, time-consuming and requires dedication.

The idea that non-duality is a "spiritual get-rich-quick scheme" comes from the misunderstanding that it’s something to be *achieved* or *attained* by an individual. But there is no individual, and nothing to attain. Non-duality doesn’t promise freedom or make life "better" for anyone, because there is no one.
The illusion is that there's a person who needs time, effort, or dedication to "change" or "improve" themselves. But this is part of the dream. In reality, there is no "process", no "change", no "progress"-just *what is*, already complete, already whole.
So, the notion of gradual transformation through effort belongs to the story of separation, where the individual believes they are moving toward something. But in the absence of the individual, it’s seen that there’s nothing to get and no one to get it. There’s just this-what is happening, without "anyone" needing to fix or change it.

I agree with the other commentor on this post that the title of this video is misleading.
It is great that you are sharing your insights from years of practicing however you also have to acknowledge that being in the contemplative non dual space is where you first get acquainted with your shadow. That is why mindfulness is used in so many therapies as step 1!
Besides Non dual studies go a lot beyond meditation practice that people engage in to deal with mental health. The benefits of 'presence' is only one aspect of non dual studies almost like a side effect!
Non duality is not limited to mental health or Vipassana or meditation and there are different traditions that teach different aspects of it so again it's unfair to blanket cover 'Non duality' as leading to escapism.
From the video it sounds like you studied the practice for one aspect but not the tradition so it would make sense why you haven't been able to see the broader aspect.
Truth is when you truly understand non duality of your existence it paves the way for you to be more empowered to do your shadow work and take inspired action as it treats the core human emotion of 'Fear' which creates separation which leads to most mental health disorders.
It paves the way for those aspects to come out.
Good on you for finding out that there is more to it than meditation but would be nice if you represented the tradition fairlu and gave it its due acknowledgement along with taking responsibility for your naivete in trusting some teachers more than you should have!

I've been suffering with quite extreme social anxiety since I was very young. It's left me debilitated. I can hardly interact with anyone genuinely. On top of that I developed an addiction since I was 10 that has never gone away, and this horrible feeling that "something needs to change".
The "shadow work" that you are talking about sounds a lot like Internal Family Systems therapy. I had an IFS therapist for a few months last year. I ended up quitting therapy because I could not access my emotions whatsoever. Whenever my therapist prompted me to check in with a part of myself, I'd draw a blank. Helpless, I started looking towards meditation (maybe it would help me to feel my emotions?), but could never keep up a consistent habit. I fell into laziness and inactivity, repeating the same destructive behaviors over and over.
Throughout this journey, there is this battle in my mind of "should I force myself to be social and quit my addiction, or take the compassionate approach and practice self-discovery instead?" Despite repeated attempts, I have failed to make lasting change through the former, and the latter feels like I am heading nowhere. I'm not sure how to proceed, as I feel really stuck. I definitely see the truth in what you are saying in this video. Shadow work seems like diving into the deep end. The area that I've been avoiding all my life. To be more "real" with myself. But I'm not so clear on how to get there.

Gratitude for the testimony brother. Non dual is the law of oneness. Our ego and our spirit are parts of a whole. Our being as individuals are part of the whole collective.
The four noble truths teach us that suffering is a part of life. The 8 fold path teaches us how to escape this suffering. Jesus teaches us how to combat Satans advances.
Psychology teaches us how to adjust the mind.
Meditation is a tool for awareness.
Awareness is what we are along with the concept or construct of self.

Non-duality is a quick escape hatch during tense times hence all the under 30s suddenly finding “enlightenment” during times of ego death or despair most recently seen during the quarantine. Now that the fruits of numbness are a realization of a humanity they are disowning many are waking up out of the trance.
Honestly, I knew this going in but even while knowing that it’s not “the universe” sending me x but the algorithm, the self abdonment is a seductive alternative in times on unbearable pain. What is worrying is if the self can ever forgive the pain incurred on it during those times as it is much Iike an abandoned child only left to pretend that pain isn’t pain as the mind is preoccupied with this new age koolaid.
My broader point even if being embodied many lack coping skills and some get taken out at the knees even with coping skills leaving a dissociated emptiness rife for the algo to try to fill with this bullshit. I suppose the first step is to acknowledge that a part of oneself has chosen this path under dire circumstance than a level of acceptance and tolerance for whatever internal anger grief this produced eventually some self-forgiveness and repair. I guess it all sounds easy when you are consuming this woo but to be embodied and do this it probably takes months or year with external support.

Non-duality is a realization.. Upon that realization you come to know the SELF. Once you know the SELF you immediately understand what suffering is. You can’t read and watch videos on non duality and think you are gonna get it. It doesn’t work like that. Quitting non duality just means that you weren’t ready for that realization of Self. The ironic thing is its the seeking for something else in the future called happiness thats causing the suffering. We are continuously denying reality. Its seems to me in the end there is nothing you can do. Yes there are things we can do to have a more balanced experience of life, meditation, diet, sleep, healthy relationships etc. But the me cant let go of the me. There is an Adyshanti clip on you tube titled 'total failure' which describes this very well. From my experience most of my glimpses or openings have been in moments of total failure. I get what you are saying, but also what is the ultimate healing for those abandoned parts of ourselves but to come out of isolation into non separation, ie to be touched by our deeper level of being and realise it is of the same nature. That is a form of ultimate healing for those parts because what is ultimately the healing ground? On the other side of things you can be doing psychological work your whole life and not really get anywhere either.

I agree that youtube seems inundated with "nondual" teachers preaching all kinds of stuff, buyer beware! I learnt about nondual traditions 30 years ago, before RUclips, and like you I was hoping for a quick fix out of my suffering. But unlike you, when my suffering came up alongside my meditation practice, I took myself off to do therapy, Reiki, EFT, personal growth. Maybe its a girl thing, but that just seemed obvious to me, and I'm grateful for that. Our human life is embracing our humanity and also our divinity - nonduality is seeing the whole and the individual as one and the same life, it's not an escape into universal bliss out of our bodies and minds. I have never read/heard any authentic nondual teachers elude to that? I also watch Angelo and he for sure never says that. Even the term 'end of suffering' is deep and profound and not at all what the ego thinks it is - as any deeper study into nonduality will uncover for you. I'm glad the youtube nondual pop culture is getting some heat, but please don't misrepresent the truth and profundity of authentic nondual teachers. Of course take care of all your needs - body, mind, emotions, spirit, be holistic in your approach.

  • @geoffcarlitz

What is so often misunderstood is that nonduality "includes" duality. Only a fully realized (accepted, forgiven, loved) individual is able to realize the ONE. The ONE includes the totality of all possible individuals, individuals who have risen to their full potentiality as expressions of the ONE. The ONE is the unity of ALL and EVERYTHING. Nothing is excluded or denied or rejected or forgotten. IT is simultaneously everything and nothing and ONE. IT is not a denial or abandonment of oneself but but rather a full realization of oneself as being an expression of the ONE SELF. There can be no ONE without the many and no many without the ONE. Separation happens within unity and unification arises out of separation. A unity that has not evolved out of separation could not know itself as a unity. And all separation would simply fall apart without there being a ground of unity holding it together. Hence nonduality and duality are two sides of the same coin, which coin is simultaneously the many and one and none. IT IS and IT IS NOT. IT is always already the case. IT is ETERNITY and INFINITY, time and timelessness, everything and nothing. But these are just words and concepts.... the ONE is indescribable - IT is but IT cannot be known. Suffering is a step on the path of the individual as it evolves into the ONE. Every step on the path is necessary. There is no way around ones suffering; one must go through it!

Good video! I think going into non duality when you had not had a first awakening makes no sence. I am talking about myself here. I will do an online course with a psychologist to work deep shadow work on the person level, inner child work and this, which goes 6 months. So am working on "the person". But on the same time l am watching my thoughts and do some self inquiry (trace back the thought). I think there is nothing wrong or harmful with this. On the contrary: watching thoughts makes me aware of belives or thought patterns or coping mechanisms of which l would not be aware of otherwise. I think this is valuable. But non duality doesnt make sence for me yet. I am just watching the videos of Angelo for enoyment. To say things like: there is nobody here or something would be not correct for me.

"Now: You may be quite able to see through the distortions of conventional Christianity. You may have changed your ideas to such an extent that you can see little similarity between your current ones and those of the past. Now you may believe in the theories of Buddhism, for example, or of another Eastern philosophy. The differences between any of those systems of thought and Christianity may be so apparent that the similarities escape you. You may follow one of the schools of Buddhism in which great stress is laid upon the denial of the body, discipline of the flesh, and the avoidance of desire. These elements are quite characteristic of Christianity also, of course, but they may appear more palatable, exotic, or reasonable coming from a source foreign to your childhood education. So you may leap from one to the other, shouting emancipation and feeling yourself quite free of old limiting ideas, but hold the old ideas and simply put new terms to them. Philosophies that teach denial of the flesh must ultimately end up preaching a denial of the self and building a contempt for it, because even though the soul is couched in muscle and bone it is meant to experience that reality, not to refute it. All such dogmas use artificial guilt, and natural guilt is distorted to serve those ends. In whatever terms, the devotee is told that there is something wrong with earthly experience. You are, therefore, considered evil as a self in flesh by virtue of your very existence. This alone will cause adverse experience, making you reject the very basis of your own framework of experience."

The "direct" method can become overly goal oriented. I have always benefitted from the point of view that "growth" is about as natural as the response of a tree to the weathers of the seasons. Those who, intentionally or not, grind down the personality through the use of "pointings" will necessarily experience the "imbalances" of forced growth, perhaps discarding valuable intelligence, perhaps owing to an overvaluation of "not ego." To make daily space for meditation has always been a safe path for me, a beautiful path, a joyous path, which pours out into life. Can I tempt you with lingering eyes, light emanating from yonder branches.

I wonder if we are creating a false dichotomy here. The non-dual approach shows resistance is an illusion of identifying with a separate self, and integrating our lost children, we use love to welcome the separate back to the whole. Why not combine both approaches. Non-dual if the resistance feels like an impenetrable wall, or as a first pass, and then love to reintegrate back to the whole. Here’s how both approaches complement each other:
Seeing Through the Illusion (Advaita’s Perspective):
When you inquire, “Who is experiencing this?” you’re looking to see whether there’s truly a “self” experiencing resistance or if it’s a mental construct. By recognizing resistance as arising within an illusion of separation, you realize that the resistance itself has no power over you. This helps dissolve the identification with a separate self and reveals the open awareness that’s always at peace.
Outcome: This approach reveals that resistance is not inherently real; it’s simply a passing experience in awareness. However, it doesn’t mean rejecting the experience-it means seeing that there is no separate “me” suffering from it. It’s actually a deeply loving and freeing way to recognize that, in essence, no part of you is inherently wounded or isolated.
Meeting Resistance with Love (Christian Mysticism’s Perspective):
When you meet resistance with love, you approach it as a part of yourself calling for understanding and compassion. By embracing resistance, you integrate aspects of yourself that might have felt unacknowledged or separate. This can be profoundly healing and feels deeply loving, as each part of you is welcomed and seen.
Outcome: This approach recognizes and integrates the parts of yourself that feel separate, allowing resistance to dissolve into love rather than fade through inquiry. It’s like filling the perceived gap of separation with the warmth of acceptance, thereby seeing through the illusion of separation in a compassionate way.
    How These Approaches Work Together
Using both perspectives means you don’t lose any part of yourself in the process. Here’s how they overlap:
Seeing Through the Illusion with Love: When you inquire “Who is experiencing this?” with a gentle and compassionate approach, you’re not just seeing resistance as empty but also welcoming the experience with love. This way, seeing through the illusion and meeting it with love are not in opposition; rather, they work together.
Recognizing Resistance as an Experience in Wholeness: Resistance becomes an experience within the greater whole rather than a problem to fix or a self to protect. Both inquiry and love reveal the unity behind it all-whether you ask “Who is experiencing this?” or meet it as a “lost child” of awareness, both paths bring you back to the same source.
So, you’re not leaving any part of you out or unloved. Instead, you’re seeing that resistance is both an illusion to see through and a doorway to love and compassion, leading you to a deeper, unified experience.

    • @MichaelHarris-cdn
      @MichaelHarris-cdn 2 месяца назад

Resistance is a finite appearance, a temporary form within the infinite field of awareness.
Seeing the Infinite Within the Finite: If you approach resistance as an illusion, you can observe it with a kind of “microscope,” allowing you to see through it, much like revealing the empty space within a seemingly solid rock. When you look closely, you find that resistance is not a solid block but a movement within open awareness, empty of true separation.
Welcoming the Finite Back Into the Infinite: Alternatively, by meeting resistance with love, you invite this finite experience to dissolve into the whole, reuniting it with the infinite. When you embrace resistance in this way, you’re not pushing it away or treating it as something separate; you’re absorbing it back into the openness of infinite awareness, much like welcoming a small part back into the vastness it came from.
Both approaches reveal the infinite within the finite, either by seeing through the illusion of separation or by allowing the finite to be lovingly integrated into the whole. This dual approach-either seeing through or welcoming back-creates a pathway where resistance leads you, every time, back to the wholeness of your infinite self.

Hi, great video! You may already know this but I thought it could be helpful.
You mentioned that you tried to overcome all of your suffering through meditation, but this in itself is a dualistic idea. You can do 10,000+ hours of meditation but if your practice is directed to some ideal you could easily regress.
That’s because there is nothing other than what is now. One should not expect or yearn for a future without suffering since it does not actually exist - ‘future’ is just a figment of mind.
I know you’ve probably heard this before and my comment may not be useful, but this is my experience so far. I too was obsessed with the mistaken idea that meditation would solve my problems directly.
I would highly recommend you listen to Beginners Mind by Shunryu Suzuki - it’s an awesome book that really helped me. There’s a fantastic reading by Peter Coyote on RUclips.

They take a big hit but it's mainly a "seeing through" the illusion of conditioned self-talk aka thought. From there on, thoughts are less sticky and it becomes somewhat easier to allow buried pain to come up especially with inquiry. 🎉

    • @SamRoff
      @SamRoff  2 месяца назад +2

      I would agree with @indef93
First awakening did not ameliorate the feeling of something wrong with me as shame and other repressed emotions/conflicting identities accrued through early childhood were & are still present at the somatic level which are at war with each other, and that is felt as inherenently & sometimes deeply uncomfortable - although Angelo has said, sometimes it actually becomes enjoyable to be able to experience these states with such depth and richness without avoiding them anymore in subtle ways. Shame in particular carries with it a degree of 'there's something wrong here', and add conflicting somatic based-identites that self attack ontop of that and it's not very pleasant lol.
Awakening basically opened the mind into a vast spaciousness where it becomes increasingly easier to dis-identify with mental states and get a lot of leverage on conditioning so deep transformation can take place (if you're interested, I talk about this exclusively in episode 2 of this podcast). Very beautiful and useful part of my process

I would say it has to do with embodying emotions of pain/sadness but (almost more importantly) also anger so as to feel and express your own boundaries. Lemme assure you, shadow work is perfectly acceptable as a practice dude. Find what works for you and go all in on that. Theres no right or wrong here, no way to truly waste time. Ive come round to acknowledging the emotion. Non duality doesnt soeak to our needs aa kids. You do need to heal and hold those rejected parts. You absolutely need a healthy self first. I didnt get that as a child. I do agree that non duality points to others not meaning to hurt you. But you can use Transactional analysis and other models for that. I wonder if you noticed the patterns that you tend to follow, Sam. You find a new technique/interest/book/teacher/method then you throw yourself at it for some time with great determination (and desperation, as you said). Then you find something else; rinse and repeat. This in itself can be part of the so-called spiritual journey. A common pattern for "seekers". All well and good. (I have my reservations about this approach but they're not the point I'm getting at).
What is problematic from my perspective is that you take each of these attermpts you make and then package them up as advice/teachings for people. Your videos have titles like: "every serious seeker must learn this"; "how to deepen in presence while integrating trauma"; "strongly resisting experience, try this!"; "shadow work master: ready to be red-pilled?"
I suppose it's okay to share your "spiritual journey" with others by saying "here's what I experienced and how I handled it. Here's what I learned". (Although, given, as you have seen , what you thought you knew 100% today may change very quickly and therefore I feel it is unwise to discuss these things publicly). In this video you said more than once that Ï knew something was off; I knew this wasn't working but I kept doing it anyway believing it would work in the end if i just tried enough" But you didn't really talk about these doubts. Instead your content always presented an appearance of "hey this is great, it worked for me, it's going to work for you! Here's how you do it and here's what you''re doing wrong. I have the answer!"
Spiritual seekers, as you have pointed out, are often people with mental health concerns, trauma, and other issues that need attending to. We are usually vulnerable, impressionable, and naive with the best intentions to heal ourselves and others. And finding good teachers and instruction is incredibly hard these days when anyone can hang a shingle and call themselves a "counesellor", "coach", or "guide"
That said, I urge you to look at yourself honestly and consider whether you are in the position of taking on the enormous responsibility of teaching/guiding others when your own journey is still evoilving so rapidly. I am, frankly, a bit alarmed that you are offering courses and guidance (for a fee, no less) given your own struggles. I have watched your channel from the beginning and many of your videos so I have a fairly good grasp of what it is you are offering.
I hope you will take this message in the spirit it is meant: to protect yourself and others, particularly those who are feeling vulnerable and lost from "solutions" that can, in fact, be harmful (depending on a lot of factors). Teaching is an enormous moral responsibility where spiritual growth is concerned. You mentioned a teacher who talked about having a healthy self before transcending it. I believe that both those aspects of growth should be very estrablished and mature before taking on the role of teacher and guide; even through the one-way medium of youtube. I am also concerned that your current way of operating is blocking your own growth and development because your focus is split between your business and your sincere spiritual seeking. Do with that what you will. I wish you all the best and hope that you will consider my arguments here and then do whatever you think is best. I like you and you're obviously smart, empathic, curious, and well-intentioned. My only reason for this critique is the hope that you'll have the best outcome in whatever your endeavours are.
    Peace.

@@cocodell hey, I appreciate your feedback. It feels balanced and grounded and coming from a loving place of lived experience. I have definitely realised these patterns in myself which is why I have chosen to focus on tried and tested areas I have ‘overcome’ or have some genuine time tested insight in within the span of 2 years prior. I like your feedback on the wording of videos. Sometimes it’s a bit click-bait sounding. Despite the titles, I try to adhere to that 2 year philosophy. You may notice I sometimes step back and take long breaks because I do encounter these moral concerns within myself and delicately try to balance adhering to my calling vs facing my own spiritual growth. Sometimes, it gets foggy. I intend to continue to deepen into authentic sharing and not holding up a fake image. Titles and thumbnails could perhaps use some adjustment to reflect this too. How would you personally word titles and thumbnails that would encourage you to engage? You obviously enjoy the content and get something out of it as you’ve been following me for some time - can you offer some suggestions that feel grounded and like you’d actually be enthused to click on?

That non dual stuff never made a lot of sense to me . Don’t get me wrong I like an eckart tolle video now and then but if you’ve got a rotten tooth go to the dentist and get to the root of it
It would be like saying enjoy the beautiful food but you can’t , you can’t bypass a rotten tooth or a traumatised mind
    It also looks very egotistical
It’s fine but way Too much time spend on it

Meditating out a a desire out or a craving to fix a condition does not work. Having a good teacher is essential. You tube has a large selection of people who post on " awakening " and " non duality " who are autodidact. Although well intentioned their validity is sometimes questionable. This means that non of their "teachings" are based on unbroken chains of tradition or a solid spiritual philosophy, rather they are just "dabbling" in to teachings that can have bad out comes for some after having personal experiences that might not live up to the level of true awaking. RUclips as your main source for spiritual guidance with those vague and questionable "teachers" with incoherent messages is ill advised and asking for trouble that leads to confused and messed up yogis. Classic eastern philosophies. traditions and teachings have more to offer then these new age RUclips snake oil sales men and women who sell you their own twisted version of the truth. Find you a good teacher in a well respected tradition who has devoted their life to the path with a track record of complete dedication to practice and scripture. Not some dreamy youtuber who thinks he's enlightened after a couple of years of meditating in their bed room and ready for teaching.

I have absolutely nothing to do with this mumbo jumbo BS. I was just recommended a video by some guy named Rupert Spira and I wanted to find out if other people also realized he's a con artist, possibly a cult leader. Took me about 30 seconds to recognize his grift.

Duality comes from distinction so there's no way to understand the whole without that which constitutes it as to understand is to know the relationship between things as there is nothing to compare the whole to so there's nothing left other than to divide the whole or multiply the singular

    • @geoffcarlitz
      @geoffcarlitz 2 месяца назад

What is so often misunderstood is that nonduality "includes" duality. Only a fully realized (accepted, forgiven, loved) individual is able to realize the ONE. The ONE includes the totality of all possible individuals, individuals who have risen to their full potentiality as expressions of the ONE The ONE is the unity ALL and EVERYTHING. And all separations would simply fall apart without there being a ground of unity holding them together. Hence nonduality and duality are two sides of the same coin, which coin is simultaneously the many and one and none. IT is always already the case. IT is ETERNITY.
