Theres a learning curve, but the barrier to entry is a tennis ball on a piece of string, or 2, 3, 5,7 or 9 bits of 3/4" wood and some split rings, and an open patch of grass or sand. If you can hulahoop, you can ropedart. If you can swing a rope around and bend your arms, you can ropedart. With time you can star wrapping and launching off different bodyparts. I learned by slowing down shanghai noon, and watching flow videos from burning man. when your ready you can upgrade to good cotton rope and a heavy duty kong dog toy. Then, a 3kg steel cannonball welded to a u-bolt on a 12ft section of heavy bicycle chain and you become a one man wrecking crew

I bought a kunai to do this with since the “dart” it originally came with didn’t stick into wood targets. Of course I’m not insane and recommend anyone to start with a rubber ball or something first. My sparring/training rope dart is just a training knife on a rope. Also look into kyoketsu shoge shibari jutsu. It’s a fun skill knowing how to throw a knot towards anyone dumb enough to grab the dart

    • @Sekkiryuutei

also for people reading this dont expect an update unless i git good and became bruce lee
also also its easy to learn hard to master so you should keep at it and dont let yourself be disuayed if it dont work out as easy as it came ^^

Lol also glad I can help point out the one technique that took me years to come across on my own, one tip is if you’re going to practice shibari jutsu it helps to have the basics down for throwing bo-shuriken (throwing spikes).
Also kunai and chain would be amazing but I live in Canada, the rope dart is just barely legal as is lol

I used to spin poi a lot. About twenty years ago, I was dating a lovely American girl, who had a dad in the military, and we had been given use of a beach apartment he had access to, on the military base in SanDiego. Early one morning, I was out on the stoop, spinning poi made from tennis balls, when a guy who had been taking dawn photos of the surfers walked by, and watched for a moment. I said “Morning”, and he asked if they were tennis balls on those chains.
“Yes”, I replied, “these are just practice poi”.
“Oh, so, do the real ones have, like, spikes on them?” he asked.
I explained to him that the ‘real’ ones were made from Kevlar rope that you soak in kerosene, and set on fire, and perform fire shows, typically where music is being played out, etc. He thought about this for a while and said,
“So… they’re like… pom-poms?”, and just like that, I realised that in his eyes, I had gone from special forces sabat ninja, to cheerleader.
Any time I was asked about the practice poi after that, I’d always tell people that the real ones have poison tipped razor sharp blades.

Javelins are not spun on a rope and slings were used to launch the projectile not bludgeon the target while it is still in the sling.
The reason flexible weapons are not considered practical weapons is that you are about as likely to hurt yourself using them to fight than the enemy. You can become effective on the battle field with much less training with a sword or stick than a nun chuck or flail. They do however make great exibition weapons as twirling these things around without getting hurt looks impressive as hell.

Flexible weapons are also exceptionally easy to defend against, the short and boring answer is to use a ranged weapon like a bow, crossbow, or even (yes the most basic and over stated response) a gun. The second more technical and somewhat dangerous option is a long ridged weapon ideal something like a hafted pole weapon or a long sword that you are willing to sacrifice in order to tangle and nullify the flexy weapon and draw a side arm like a short sword, axe, or dagger and get in close. You just have to know your distance and timing well enough and there’s the possibility that the flexy weapon is also sacrificial so they can get your primary weapon out of the way and draw their own side arm
Sorry for my poor punctuation skills but tbh I simply couldn’t be bothered.
