At the end of 2019, Magnus Carlsen - the Chess Grandmaster and current world champion - was briefly at the top of the Fantasy Premier League standings. It makes sense that someone of his abilities should also be an excellent FPL player, but where exactly does the overlap in abilities occur?

Hi s ELO rating means very little - they have been inflating over the last 50 years.
@@shanewright2772 That's just wrong, players are improving all the time which is why the inflation actually makes sense but also serves to highlight who's the objective best player to ever played the game. It's the same as how Pele is nowhere near as good as Messi or Ronaldo, because the quality of footballers in general has gone up.
@@shanewright2772 The inflation is very slow. They mostly have more training possibilities with modern computers. And bigger motivation with prices rise.

But its easily arguable on whether Magnus is the GOAT of Chess or not...GOATs of Chess would be highly deserved to GMs such as...Bobby Fischer, Garry Kasparov, Mikhail Tal, Paul Morphy, José Raúl Capablanca, Alexander Alekhine etc..

Patriots Legend no it would be like calling him a professional footballer.... there are 1500 chess grandmasters in the world. Obviously there are more pro footballers but still very undermining. I think it’s more like calling Federer a top 1500 seed in tennis.

@@suryanshshirbhate5954 The answers to these questions depend on whether we are talking about the retired Kasparov now or younger Kasparov in his prime years. I also agree Carlsen beating Karpov and drawing one of the two games he played vs Kasparov when he was 13 should not be degraded in any way. My point is you can't claim that somehow proves Carlsen > Kasparov. Just like 58 year old Kasparov who's been retired for 15 years, drawing vs 29 year old world number one Carlsen cannot be used to say Kasparov > Carlsen.
There have been a total of 1923 Grandmaster titles awarded by FIDE.. This guy is not just another grandmaster.. He's 4 time World Champion (Also current).. Highest rated chess player in the history of the sport.. Arguably the best ever..

Super grandmaster and former five time WC Vishy Anand said playing Carlsen is like playing a human computer. Carlsen is the greatest player who ever lived.
This GM is good. He can be a very good coach where other teams will have no options just like when one is checkmated.
There are many that can take in huge amount of information and retain them but there's a select few that could access them quickly on the right moment or logically interpret them.

Norwegian GM Simon Agdestein played for the Norwegian football team before concentrating on chess as his career.
You need be a genius to consistently do well (not one lone season but many) in FPL. It's nothing to do with luck when you can repeat the feat.
I would pay this guy millions if i was a club owner or president. Pretty sure guys like this would make a clubs scouting and analisys departments 10 times better then everyone else competing.

Tbf the GOAT finished 10th in the Fantasy Premier League 2019-20 season.
Can be a bit of luck too. Yes you can strategize and have tactics in picking players. But I remember picking Aguero, he had 2 good matches and got me points but got injured. I changed to another good striker. Can remember who but the next match got a red card.

Football fans and players can learn a lot from chess. There is the belief it is boring, but after you understand the rules, tactics and strategy it become enjoyable. For anyone reading this who might like to further their understanding of chess, I'd encourage you to view some @chessnetwork videos, which are very good for lower ability players, and is well explained what is going on.

Carlsen’s individualism is also very prominent in top level chess. He shies away from mainstream, arguably best openings and chooses more offbeat ones.

As someone who plays and follows chess, I always say that people overestimate the transfer of skills from chess to other things in life. In fact, a lot of chess players suck ass at other games, like Shogi, and that's getting really close to chess. Now sure, if a chess player were to properly learn shogi, it would likely be a lot easier then for a first time learner, in the same way that learning Spanish is easier for those who know Portuguese already, there is some transfer of skills. That said, the fact that he's the chess world champion doesn't really transfer that well to Fantasy Football, instead I believe that what makes him successful at FPL is his other unique characteristics, rather than chess.

for anyone who doesn't know, Magnus Carlsen is pretty much the undisputed greatest chess player of all time, and has an IQ north of 190 (one of the highest ever recorded). Naturally, he's going to succeed at basically everything he does
