  • I see and receive a lot of comments about the cost of living in the Dominican Republic and people saying the country has gotten to be very expensive to live. In this video, we are going to discuss this and I will give you my opinion and thoughts about this increasingly popular topic.

Food and drinks have gotten expensive all over the world my friend. That’s called inflation. With that being said, DR is a lot less expensive in restaurants and in groceries.
And I go to really good restaurants in DR.
The problem is people expect to spend $50 in a fine dining restaurant in DR and that’s definitely not the case.
      You have to be realistic.

There’s no denying it. Santo Domingo specially, has gotten A LOT more expensive the past 5 years. I’ve been traveling to the city for the past 5 years and it’s gotten to a point that certain restaurants are not much different than the US. Cost of living for locals have been increasing a lot lately too. My parents live there and utilities and food aren’t as affordable as they were.

Great video. I still believe this is worth it. Most people who come from the US to live in DR want to live an above average lifestyle where the weather is nice all year long. And there are some who come to the DR to cut cost and live cheaper. It depends on the person and what lifestyle they want.

Yes, things are more expensive all over the world due to inflation. The DR is more expensive than it use to be, but it happening everywhere, US, Mexico, Europe etc... I am moving to the DR in two years and I hope inflation improves, but the DR is still less expensive than living in the USA. I live in Washington DC and rent and the cost of living is crazy.

@@NorberisR another important point you should mention moving forward. They keep comparing DR to other countries like Colombia and Brazil. They fail to mention the political instability in those countries. Brazil and Colombia have both had major unrest in those countries and seem to have them every couple of years and expats will not be immune from those troubles. The DR like almost all of the Caribbean countries including Cuba are very stable and you don’t ever have to worry about massive protests and problems in the government (minus corruption). So that’s a huge issue they need to be thinking about and most do not.

but you will be farther from the action and if you want to downgrade even more you can get a place less than 200 with 1 bed, kitchen ,bathroom. plus 100 for gas and elec. water incl

It is incredibly expensive now especially if you live there with your family. I live in Cabatete since 10 years and it's gotten crazy. Private kindergarten (there are no public kindergarten) for the two kids it's reached 830 USD monthly for both, a pineapple is 150 pesos (when it used to be 70/80 pesos...it's cheaper in Italy where you can buy a pineapple for 2 euros!), grocery and weekly shopping of rice, beans and basic food it's around 200 dollars/week...the DR we used to know it's now gone. Not really the place you'd move with your family.

I am still here for the bloopers...I think DR can be cheap or expensive depending on where you live, and your lifestyle. Inflation has had an impact on prices globally, and DR is not an exception. Given how much he pays for groceries, I will assume that he is shopping mostly for American brands. Given that a lot of things are imported, I am not surprised at his high grocery bills. Norberis has done videos on how to do grocery shopping as a local that some folks can take a look at to get ideas. Given that I am not aware of what area of Santiago he lives in, or how many bedrooms he has, I do think his rent is too damn high for Santiago. Norberis has a good point on moving to a smaller city. You can live in San Pedro De Macoris or San Cristobal and still do the hour drive to Santo Domingo to party or whatever. Finally, I have no intent to measure any ones pocket or finances, but I do believe that DR can be cheap or expensive dependent on your lifestyle and where you live. There are locals living off $400 a month, and are happy as fuck. A budget of $2500 a month in DR? Homie, yous a baller.

Is it too expensive? I would say, it depends ..
It depends on what are your expectations and your options .. but also what the local environment has to offer.
Guess the prices in DR have gone sky high "thanks" to the wealthy US and Canadian retirees, who have found this beautiful land to be the perfect place for living and don't hesitate to spend as much money as possible to make their lives more comfortable.
For me personally, as a Scandinavian, DR is definitely TOO expensive country to retire to. Portugal or Greece would be much reasonable choice .. or South East Asia, if you love tropical climates.

Were incredibly excited about our purchase and the future of the area. Its 15mins from airport and/or public beach..the complex has 2 pool areas and guest parking. At 100 USD monthly HOA fees were happy. We definitely plan of Air Bnb'n it for extra income and hopefully purchasing another in a year or so. Were 2 black guys who grew up modestly and are comfortable..NOT RICH AT ALL..very proud of ourselves! Expensive..not even compared to the US! Now I will say because its becoming a bigger Tourist destination the prices are comparable to US as far as clubs, restaurants and entertainment but thats everywhere. I see many locals riding motorized bikes, public transportation, etc. Im sure if I was a local, just like in the states the price of living is becoming hectic..u have to adapt! Hello Norberis, a really very good report. Is the DR overpriced? I don't think that's an easy question to answer. I've known the DR for almost 29 years and have also lived there for quite a while. If I compare the prices then with the prices of today, including inflation, then you might think: Yes, the DR is overpriced. In recent years, prices and costs have increased extremely quickly. The locals feel that too. Even then there were areas where it was more luxurious and expensive and still is today. It's the same everywhere in the world. What's wrong with the DR is that there aren't price controls on essentials. For example, the monthly rent for an apartment can only be increased by a maximum of 8% every 2 years. This increase must be justified and documented each time, and tenant and landlord must both give their consent. This is called tenant protection. It's just an example. I don't think so much about tourists, expats or investors living there. I think the partly arbitrary price increases mainly affect the locals. Is Colombia cheaper? Yes but also no. Eating out, partying, having fun, taxi prices etc... is about 25% cheaper. Don't rent, it can even be more expensive. Brazil is more expensive. Except for a few poor areas in the north. And we do know that the US has some of the worst price-performance results globally at hot spots. What is the point of such comparisons? If you then add countries like Thailand, the infrastructure is a lot better than the DR and still cheaper in all things. Comparisons are useless, you don't compare apples with pears either. For me, the DR is not overpriced. At least not yet.

@NorberisR yes..I understand that.. but think if the car was imported.. it means the first buyer pays that.. after that is no longer the same ... the vehicle is now apart of DR... but seems like whatever price it was to import.. no matter how many buyers.. they feel like keeping the imported price tacked on.. no matter how old the vehicle, or mileage.. ... and there's sort of a scheme behind the import stuff..... and why is it they all look for almost half down to do a down-payment.... I'm wondering if most Dominicans have to put like $15,000 down on a $27,000 vehicle.. how is that fair

My cousin is a dealer and based on what you are saying you have no idea about the process. This isn't about how you feel or what it seems to be, it's business. When we shipped our 2015 Hyundai Veloster it was valued at around $8k. To ship and and drive away with tag and title cost an extra around $6.5k. If I were to it sell as business owner why would would I sell it for $14.5k when thats what i put into it. I'll sell it for almost $20k or more which is 3 times what its actually worth. Either you understand the business or don't. The same is to be said anywhere you have to import cars. Everyone thinks everything is scam. Insane..smh

@NorberisR there's no disagreement here on my end...I hear you... I'm saying who buys the car first after it's shipped can expect to pay that... but why is the car being used for years, age ,mileage, and after 8 years only losing very little value.... the second buyer of a imported vehicle is still paying the price for the original shipping it seems.. I live there also... been there 8 years on and off.. but paid my first car cash.... but had been looking and now realizing how expensive old used cars are.. and the want so much upfront...is mind boggling.... so does your cousin require 30 to 50% down before financing?

My comment is from a Dominican that grew up upper middle class to age 20 there, have been living in the US for 30+ years w/ the last 20 as “very well off”. DR is VERY expensive for what it is, infrastructure support, and the level of development. I live now in S FL a block from the beach in a very affluent area and I can’t buy 2/3 of my current home in a similar area (city or touristic area) in DR now. Some costs of living are ridiculously low as you said (food, labor costs, services), but some things like real estate, electronics, cars, and a few other things are astronomical compared to the US AND Europe. And that is if compare them to Dollar costs, not pesos (people there earn and live in pesos but spend at dollar levels. You wouldn’t know from driving around there though😂😂

    • @dgasmd1

Of course, cost of living is just one metric as to why one would live there. Culture, quality of life, etc are the mean reasons why anyone should look at living there. Also, your point of reference has a lot to do. If you are coming from NYC or LA, real estate (Sq FT/$ )main seem cheap, but the opposite can be said if come from a small town in IN or KY.

All the real estate for sale on the North Coast/Punta Cana is now overpriced -- that bubble is going to burst somewhere down the road no matter what the real estate folks tell you. Especially when you take into account that climate change is only going to get worse and that means the sargassum problem isn't going away anytime soon. If the beaches are smelly and a mess for six months of the year, then the best feature of the DR becomes a liability.
I stopped looking for property there and went back to looking on the Costa del Sol/Costa Blanca in Spain. Spain may not have the same beaches or year-round beach weather, but the winters are mild, the beaches are nice, and the summer weather is actually nicer. Plus it has functional infrastructure, culture/arts, and makes it easy to travel all across Europe.
I know that there are cheaper areas (beautiful ones) in the DR, but for retirees most of those areas lack adequate medical facilities. That's ok if you are 30 years old, but not so good if you are 60+ -- you don't want to die from a minor heart attack because the nearest hospital or even EMT was over an hour away on crappy roads.😆 That's why most retirees tend to stick to Punta Cana or Sosua/Cabarete.

So they have turned the psy increase onto foreign people who they mistaken think are rich. You know the truth you have been to America and truth is most people are living from pay check to pay check. Right after the lockdowns they had very little travel so the prices didn't jump dramatically higher but now they have litterly doubled over night. And from my research this is uniquely in the Dominican Republic not other country's. And the areas where you see thus the most are yes the areas known for having a higher concentration of black men coming to them. I'm sorry but the facts are their and having traveled and spent months at a time in the areas I understand what you are saying too. The smaller towns near those areas hadn't jumped in price but now they are too. Because what happens is they will raise the prices on you if you frequent the same people to rent from , we understand the games it's been done to our people for many years. For example one may own the property but speaks very little English so they have a interpreter come along who is trying to get a cut of the rent to so then the game begins. Once they watch you they make a assessment on if they think your rich or not or how much they can scam, yes s am you out of $. So if they see you rent a car which by the way those prices have also soared outta proportion they will say hmmmm? He us paying 450 plus utilities and 800 for the car and he is eating well dressing well and entertaining himself well. So they think he is rich American gringo he spends 2000 dollars a month like it's nothing. Let's charge him more because we don't like his kind that much any way. ( we notice and it's all over the internet) so the next time you come everything goes up 200 bucks or more only in those areas we're a certain demographic frequents. We see the prices in all areas and notice that the prices say a hour away in a area that isn't frequently visited by a certain demographic remain the sane. Also Punta Cana is more Americanized than Las Terrenas. You have more European expats in Las Terrenas where in Punta Cana there is a mix of Americans, Canadians, Europeans, etc.

I agree with the opinion that the DR is overpriced. The disparity between income classes has grown. Can you say that it is easier or harder for a Dominican to own a home or afford basic necessities? Also, the expenses you refer to are a lot more than what you said it costs to move there in your earlier episodes. You can't compare the DR to America. You don't have the same infrastructure to form a basis.

    • @NorberisR
      @NorberisR  Год назад +1

Unless you have personally moved from the US to Dominican Republic you have no basis to say what the costs are to move. My family we personally moved here, we shipped out car, we shipped out personal belongings, we made apartment deposits, we paid to have our utilities connected, bought car tags, etc. This was 2 years ago if the prices have change then I have no control over that but I know what it cost us to move here. As far as comparing the US to DR. I'm not comparing countries, I'm comparing prices. For example you can compare Santo Domingo and New York. They're both metropolitan cities. I wouldn't compare NY to a campo in DR. The same thing in New York, LA, MIA, HOU, Chi you find in Santo Domingo, hospitals, gas stations, supermarket, pharmacies, utilities, phone companies, schools, churches, businesses, restaurants, bars, doctors, subways, public transportation, all the necessities one needs to survive. Whether it's up to US standards is one thing and why would it have to be anyway. So why can't you compare cost living? Bright lights, Hollywood, and billboards is not deciding factor.

Yes! It is overpriced we should not be comparing the Dominican Republic to the price of the U.S. You’re comparing a super power country to a small Island. There’s one word that makes it overpriced (Infrastructure)!

🚩No it is not over priced. The country is under employed. Some places are over priced for what they are even if people had a good job. But they're are affordable nice options for locals IF* they had a job , even paying dominican wages. The food does cost a little too much there considering people are overwhelmingly unemployed and make dominican wages but food cost almost the same as it does in the US. Utility bill prices are good. The government needs to do something about the economy there. They need help from economic scientist to create layers of society and employment.
🚩So overall. No it's not overpriced, just underemployed.
You can live nice in santiago for or santo domingo for 1500 or 1800 above average. Rent 600 food 600 a month and 400 on transportation and utility's, another 300 is ample entertainment there. Simple. And that's def above average by American standards. That's a nice apartment with 2 and 3 bedrooms. Or an entire house in the suburbs. You will need to install ac or water heater maybe. But you cam get 4 bedroom homes for 500$ a month easy.
Some of that shit in Punta cana is bananas. Like what local can afford a 150,000$usd home? That's wrong.the locals live in the town just west and north of Punta cana and say they live in Punta cana. But I forgot the name.
And yes. The Dan infrastructure is horrible there. The dam airport tarmac/road the airplanes use/runway needs work in santiago and santo domingo. It's very bumpy when landing. NOthing like the standards for USA. THE INSIDE of sdw is very modern and nice now. Time to redo santiago, looks like 1974.
My preference is Not the capital or inside the city centre's anyways. Nor tourist towns. Love the country though

Un platano i dos alitas de pollo will cost you $100! You even have to pay taxes for "tirandote' un peo"! Lmao Oh oh, i el facil ?!

Are you out of your mind? the average middle class apartment cost between $US 60,000 and $150,000. For paying over a million dollars it'd gotta be in a very exclusive upper class neighborhood.
