You know when you're used to drive your ordinary car and one day, for some reason, you drive a fast, nervous car? That feeling of exhilaration? It feels like that now when I work. Had I known how comfortable it is to work with a computer appropriate for the kind of software Trados is, I'd have saved and bought one a long time ago. I can't recommend it enough. It freed me of so much aggravation.

As a current Japanese Linguistics student I started to feel that the knowledge I get from the university is quite outdated or even impractical sometimes as it doesn't prepare myself for the real job. So I started to look for the information online and stumbled upon your channel. And the amount of the information you provide is quite stunning while being concise. And I have a question. How much time do you think is needed to get used to a certain CAT-tool to provide services with said CAT-tool? As most of the jobs(apart from the vocal ones) require knowledge of either MemoQ or Trados, or even both. I was thinking about spending some time to learn them to start freelancing around mid-spring, but well, war happened and my plans were delayed for an unknown amount of time.
Hello, so sorry to hear what's happening to your country. I hope you are well and safe! Yes, that's true, info from certain universities can be quite outdated because the industry evolves constantly and certain professors tend to not keep up with that. So good on you for reaching out to other sources of info as well. And don't stop here, there is so much out there. Most of the professional skills, you will just learn on the job or by DIY anyways. It doesn't take a lot of time to get used to these tools at least not to the main functionalities. They are quite straight forward. So I would suggest you write in your CV that you are familiar with them and when you get the first jobs, you can use their trial versions. Only buy them once you have a steady flow of work coming in.

How does Trados in the Cloud change the game here (and I assume there is now a MemoQ Cloud version)?. IT is not my strong point but could it mean 1) the slowness you refer to could be speeded up because it won't be downloaded on your device? 2) the problems with using a Mac/Apple fall away because the OS isn't relevant if you're using the Cloud?

I would suggest a PC, because Mac tends to be quite problematic with CAT tools. Then I'd go for min. 512GB storage, i5 or i7 processor and 16GB Ram. With these specs you should be perfectly fine. If you have the means, I'd suggest to invest roughly 1000-1500 Euro in a computer. Remember that this is your primary working tool, so it is 100% tax deductible.

Mine is a fresh install, when I click on Terminology Management, it says Multiterm not installed. Where and how can I get Multiterm and install it? Does it come as a free plugin via RWS store? But there are multiple version of them, I don't know which one to use.

I have a question: How fast do you consider tools help us translate? At this job, they want me to translate 3 PPP a day with more than 75 slides each. They want at least 15 dossiers a week. These PPP have some images and some pages are quotes, but some are full of very small text. I'm nervous! I feel like its too much a day. Also, they pay is not necessarily great, so I want to consider if it will end up being too much trouble. It helps that I've translated professionally for a while and this is what I do for a living, but not using tools lately, so I'm not familiar with how fast using them can be. Thanks a bunch for your advice!
Hi Linda, glad you found the video useful :) 3 PPPs a day with 75 slides each?? Wow that sounds like a LOT! It depends on the slides of course, but be careful before you agree to that. You can probably do around 500 words per hour. So in 8h you can do 4000 words. But be careful, it's impossible to translate 8 hours a day with your undivided attention. I'd say you can do about 2500 words per day with full focus. Tools like Trados are great, but they don't speed up the process incredibly. In the beginning, it might even slow you down a bit before you get used to it. Especially PPPs are not great friends with Trados :) there are always issues in formatting. You will have to export them in the end and do a full format overhaul again. Hmm if the pay is not good, I'd be careful with accepting this! Keep me posted :)

I think you know it best whether you are capable of getting a message across on a native level in all these languages. Also think about different registers. Can you communicate to kids, to teenagers, to young adults, to middle aged as well as to seniors in all languages and all registers? Then you're definitely equipped to use all three as target languages. of course that is very unique and might raise questions for some people, but if you're able to explain it and to back it up with good quality, then why not :) good luck!
So if you use trados for the first time ever, translating a single document, you should create a translation memory and not use autotranslate machine? If we do use auto translation can we still save that translation to memory?

Hi Anders, I think it was just the best one for a long time and people got used to using it. I think Trados and memoQ both have an edge over the other tools, so it makes sense that they are the most popular ones. In terms of agency integration, I would even say Trados is the most intuitive and scalable one, that's why many agencies are using it.

Yes you can still save it to the TM. I dont recommend using MT, but you can of course
