2008 Hyundai Santa Fe transmission fluid change

- Was told by several auto parts store folks you needed to take vehicle to dealer to have this done, draining transmission fluid, due to where the drain plug was located.. They said you needed to remove motor to do this. man what a bunch of DA's...
We decided to give it a go and while a bit different than normal still doable by DIY types. .
When we call the local hyundai stealer,, er dealership they wanted $180 bucks to do the same thing.. They just drain out fluid and refill, no filter change or anything else.
We did it for 40 bucks and took 45 mins to do using the castrol multi vehicle fluid at most advance auto, autozone, o'reilly etc at 8 bucks a qt.
We drained out appx 4.5 qts of fluid so you need to do this at least twice in a couple weeks to get a full flush.
I recommend doing one drain and fill, leave the brush pan on bottom off and drive for a week, drain and refill drive for a week and do the third time and put it all back including brush pan and you are done..
I alway write down mileage, date and amount of fluid drained in my vehicle book so when you sell the car you have records of service you did.
I use the Locking Pliers to loosen the plug and use aluminum foil and make a valley to drain fluid. The result is no mess.
The plug head is 24 mm but a 15/16 will fit just fine.
15/16 box end wrench will do in a pinch, but a 25mm is what’s called for loosening the drain plug.
Thanks for the video, I drained 4.5 lt which is a little bit more than 4.5 qts. I guess it all depends on the angle when you do the drain.
Just a note: 3 drain and refills will be about 80% fresh fluid, 4 d/r 88% and 5 drain and refills would yield about 93% fresh fluid. I will shoot for 4 drain and refills (88%). Hopefully the fluid will look pink by then. I´ve only done 2 and still looks very dark.
true but if you are doing a drain and fill every 25-35k miles you are so far ahead of the rest of them.. I bought a 2010 sonata with 125k miles and the fluid was brown.. no smell, not burnt just brown,, had to do 5 drains/fills to get it back light pink.. that was over a month or so period. did another D/F in like 3 months later.. looks like new fluid now. you can never go wrong change the trans fluid, that is for sure.. I use the castrol oil transmax. its compatible with hyundai sp3 and cost less.

So fun fact I have this same transmission in my Azera, Harbor freight sells a socket set 1/2" drive with a breaker bar for 28 dollars there a multiple sockets in the kit including the one for this plug. Don't strip it or cut the little tang off. No need.

Have a 2013 3.3l Santa Fe . What size hex do I need to open the fill/level bolt (the plastic one) 10 mm or 3/8.
Is it same size for oil fill plug of gear n transaxle

no clue on that man.. have not seen or worked on of that year.. sorry.
It is my understanding these transmissions do not have a serviceable filter so no pan drops.
We did not do pan drop.. if the fluid is not burned, black, or have chunks replacing the filter is really not needed according to a former ford transmission engineer. They inspected filters from vehicles with 300K miles and they still flowed like new.
@@carl2591 From my knowledge, the filters on these aren't that fine, rather intended to catch large particulate, and fluid changes are intended to correct any issues fine particulate from general wear may be causing. My transmission on my 08 Santa Fe with 135k miles (fluid never changed) is beginning to experience shift quality issues along with a valve buzzing noise at idle in drive. I am going to change the fluid and hopefully it will run well again.

yes its a regular metal drain plug just like any other car for the most part..
okay. but qt. of oil is that you put to that transmission?
I use the castrol transmax import.. it approved for this and several years hyundai trans that use the SP3 fluid and not a costly. (check the bottle for info) usually you need about 5 qts as you drain about 4.5,, depending on vehicle. I would drain then pour into a gallon container to check to see how much the first time..
Future ppl reading this: just knock them tabs off with a hammer. Those metal tabs cast on the pan on either side of the drain plug - they're just pot aluminum or something. Pop one or two of those suckers off real easy with a hammer so your wrench gets good contact with the plug. Otherwise you'll be messing it up struggling, and you want it back on tight enough to be confident your tranny fluid's not gonna drain while you're driving.
Just use a 15/16” box end wrench! Just say’n.
Can you flush for better results ?
sorry for late reply.. I would not recommend doing a flush. it can force material in the wrong places.. just do a drain and fill, give it a month or so and do again. the fluid should look like new. I bought a hyundai sonata with 125K miles and the trans fluid has never been changed. I had to drain and fill three times to get the fluid clean.. you have to remember you are only removing about 1/2 the capacity so two at min and sometime 3 to get it all changed.

the 3.3 5 speed auto takes around 11.3 quarts i believe
4qt or 1Gal for ‘09 with the 2.7l and AWD.
As much as comes out. I understand this only gets about 4-5 qts out .
