😲 Remarkable! TOWER OF LONDON comes from a mile back to win the Curragh Cup!

  • Tower Of London swooped in the final strides to snatch Group Two glory in the Comer Group International Curragh Cup.
The one-mile-six-furlong contest looked likely to be a battle between the 13-8 winner and 11-8 favourite Vauban, who finished fourth in the Gold Cup at Ascot last time.
However, it was Tower Of London’s fellow Aidan O’Brien inmate Grosvenor Square who set out to make all, building up a huge advantage in the hands of Gavin Ryan.
He still had plenty of daylight between him and the rest of the field turning for home, with Vauban’s attempt to run down Grosvenor Square quickly petering out.
Ryan’s mount was starting to tread water in the final furlong though, just as Tower Of London really engaged top gear for Ryan Moore, reeling in the leader in the final furlong to eventually prevail by a length and a quarter. Vauban was a further seven lengths back in third.

These stayers' events on the flat produce so many great races, with drama and excitement, but we don't have enough of them. Commercial pressures mean we now have a multitude of group 1 races from five to ten furlongs but next to nothing for the poor old stayers. Stradivarius is only attracting moderate broodmares at stud. It makes you wonder where it all will end.

No jockey who has ever lived can judge a race to win like that!
The winner only won because the leader finally ran out of steam, which allowed the fortunate Moore to catch it close to the line.
It was certainly no masterful ride.

That's my take on it too. But it can't be an easy task for a jockey on the stables number 1 choice sitting so far back knowing that a Galileo is so far in front, the song should I stay or should I go is what comes to mind. Vauban continues to have major issues once he gets near the 2f marker, yet another disappointing finishing effort from the favourite.
