  • My tribute to Ishtar. When I was about six, my father came home after watching Ishtar when it was out in theaters. He said it was the worst movie he ever saw and that he walked out of the theater about halfway into the film. I found this hilarious and wanted to see it. When it came out on HBO he taped it for me. It has since become a family favorite and one of my favorite movies of all time.

    Believe it or not -- but I LOVED this movie!!!! Especially the soundtrack. LOL. When life gets particularly bad and sad, I sing Dangerous Business and it makes me laugh out loud -- which, of course, makes me feel better.

    I LOVE this movie and leap to its defense whenever people bash it.
    Apparently I am not alone. The NYT had a piece about how unfairly maligned it was.

      Victoria Ordin i think it got such bad reviews cuz they were both previously in bigger movies and warren was a sex symbol but playin a goof in this movie, i happen to think its hilarious from a musicians standpoint, or people who want to love when dustins out on the ledge making warren promise not to call anyone cuz it could hurt their carer, "yet nobody knew who they were lol. and i dont know why but for years i randomly yell APPLAUD!! like the guy does at the end of the film, idont know why haha other movie thats great is easy money with rodney dangerfield, tape heads,, they call me bruce and cheech and chongs thing are tough all over where they play the "ARAB DUDES"

    I love Ishtar was lucky enough to see it on the big screen recently. The scene where Dustin Hoffman fakes Arabic at the gun sale in the desert in just sublime.

    • @mattlove1
      @mattlove1 Год назад

      actually, he was faking Berber. The fact that he claimed to speak various dialects of Berber but no Arabic put him under suspicion. Frankly, he was treading on thin ice when he ad libbed "Kareem Abdul!" but that was one of the few problems with this wonderful movie.

    You have great taste. This was an awesome movie! I always loved this song. Beatty and Hoffman were so hilarious in this. I saw this when it first played the Writer's Guild West. The audience was rolling in the aisles. The critics go this one wrong...and sadly America lost out and so few people got to see this in the theater.

    "Telling the truth can be dangerous business..." Apparently, the so-called experts missed the theme of the movie and as a result didn't understand it. It's a true comedy with the protagonists being thrust into a situation partly of their own making and partly because of their naivety. In true comedic fashion they use their innate talents to resolve the situation in their favor. True optimists, they aspire to greatness despite their limited talent and advanced age. As Lyle (Warren Beatty) pointed out, "It takes a lot of nerve to have nothing at your age, don't you understand that? Most guys'd be ashamed, but you've got the guts to just say 'to hell with it'. You say that you'd rather have nothing than settle for less, understand?" The film is truly funny as shown in the scene where they have been led on a wild goose chase out into the desert with no apparent chance for survival; slowly dying and surrounded by vultures, Lyle laments to Chuck: "Maybe I just have the blues." I love this movie.

    This is one of my favorite movies. No idea why it was called the worst movie ever made, considering that it had the entire audience in stitches almost the entire time. But, then, they all walked out, most of them denying that they had ever been laughing. Weird!

    What's not to love about this movie?!?! I''m of the opinion that the critics were overtaken by group hysteria - here was their chance to takedown a couple superstars and, boy, did they enjoy doing that. However, I found it to be a very funny movie with great campy songs (thank you, Paul Williams). One of the few movies I've purchased. "I'd rather have nothin' than settle for less.." - a watchcry for the ages :^)

    just great OST, I don't really understand those who says that it is an awful movie,
    ok it's not a profound movie, it's not a "palme d'or", but it is well done, good acting,
    and a great fun for everyone, most of all it's not worse than today moronic popular movies,
    at least I would have given an oscar nominee to Charles Grodin AND to the soundtrack

    • @SammyKablam
      @SammyKablam 8 лет назад +7

      +Jakira Kumahata I am a movie critic. I complain about everything I've ever seen -- almost. And I think the reason this movie gets so much shit is because it's tremendously stupid. But what most people miss is that it's supPOSED to be stupid. The plot is ridiculous and the protagonists are so deluded you want to slap them, but that's WHY it's fun.
      I never thought about it until now -- so thank you for the opportunity -- but I think "Ishtar" is my favorite comedy. If you can't find a DVD (though I'm certain you can, and it'll be worth the price), I urge you to at least find a torrent. You won't regret this masterpiece of hilariously frustrating genius.
