I love this movie. My former roommate and a good friend at the time used to rent this movie on tape every week partially due to the novelty of the favt that as late as 2011 in Idaho there were loads of video rental stores still renting MOSTLY VHS tapes. We used to sing the songs incessantly tonournother roommates, each other, and really anyone who had the misfortune of being within earshot.
I avoided this movie for YEARS because of all the negative reviews and the tons of pop culture jokes bashing it left and right. Then I saw this scene and knew I had to finally watch it. It's hilarious! Loved it!
As a songwriter I liked the first half of this movie and thoroughly understood it .Everyone who writes songs thinks they are good at it and you keep doing it no matter what the reviews because basically you cannot stop.
Telling the truth can be dangerous business. Honest and popular don't go hand in hand. If you admit that you play the accordion, You won't get hired in a rock n roll band. Such an underrated movie. Even if it IS all they have in Hell's video store! ;-)
For my wife and I this is one of the two or three funniest movies of all time. It was a very expensive movie to make, so maybe the critics were expecting something else (or maybe they are just pretentious). Blind camels, golamine beads, hilarious songs.....an endearing vastly overlooked comedy.
Absolutely hilarious film. First time I watched it, we had to stop it constantly because we were laughing so hard. For years I had a magnet on my fridge saying: Thumbs up for Ishtar sequel 😆
Best movie EVER! These songs, along with the scenes with the blind camel and Charles Grodin and the vultures following them around in the desert....brilliant....
@@HusbandofLois There are a lot of genuine fans of this movie. I sincerely find it hilarious. The scene where they're in the desert and the little car is driving towards them and Warren Beatty's character shouts "now there's something who wants to kill us badly enough to try and make it look like a traffic accident!" And when Hoffman's character passes out and he wakes up and sees the vultures staring at him and he asks, "You mean they're here on spec?" PRICELESS.
"I don't understand what we did wrong" I'm sure that's what beatty, hoffman and director elaine may said after the movie came out, this is one of the greatest movies ever made! I don't think it's so bad it's good, I think it's so good it's perfect! this movie I've watched it and I don't see any problems with it at all!
I *LOVE* this movie! It is one of my Top Five All-Time Favorite Comedies; the performances are fabulous; the songs are incredibly, hilariously hideous; and the whole thing just makes me laugh. My goal in life is to find an affordable DVD of this movie so I can watch it as whenever I want (I do own a VHS copy). Thank you for posting this song!
Critics just weren't ready for this style comedy in 1987 so a lot people missed out on a hilarious movie because of the bad reviews. "Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman can't sing"? No Shit Sherlock!
Thanks for the id guys! We should probably post to Wikipedia, because they have his first screen credit as "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" which came out in November and "Ishtar" came out in May of '87.
This was a $7 million idea....trapped in a $40 million dollar production nightmare. Had they just cut the overhead significantly, stuck with several script changes as opposed to HUNDREDS, and took their egos out of the equation (I'm looking at YOU, Warren Beatty), this film would have NEVER gotten the abuse, hate, and ridicule that it so unfortunately deserved. Might have even turned a small profit too.......
+Thomas Raufbold If you have to praise a film because of it's "hidden value" it is due to the fact the obvious ones were pretty bad. I know this RUclips has been up awhile, but for me--the first ten minutes are among the most underrated of all time. I finally watched Ishtar tonight after all these years of hearing about it. I wanted to like it so bad, but I sat there with my hand on my forehead, wanting to be anywhere else, watching anything else...I got through it in the end, but it was bad guys...just awful
Oh please. This ain’t no Zaat. I watch terrible movies every day - sometimes twice a day, 3, 5, 27 times per day; even the same movie, sometimes. I’m educated in the full works of one Dr. Shaquille O’Neal, I saw Battlefield Earth at midnight. I was the only human in existence who was at the Avengers on opening weekend
Have to say though they should have stayed in newyork like dust in wanted. Would have had a reosonable budget, Elaine would have been on safe ground and the film would have been consistently funny.
"Sing songs people already know. That way if people don't like it, they still have something to applaud." "But we're not singers. We're songwriters." "So? The Beach Boys weren't songwriters." That's a genius way of telling them that they suck at songwriting.
Is Ishtar an anagram for rat shit? Asking for a friend. 😄 Seriously though, I avoided this movie for a long time because of all the negativity about it at the time of its release then I finally watched it on video years later and found it really funny! Had a similar experience with Heaven's Gate - also panned at the time of it's release but actually a really awesome film.

What the hells a matter with him is he blind
Well yes, but he’s in perfect condition
No matter how many times I watch this it always makes me burst out laughing.
I saw it the day it was released- I was the only one laughing -now 40 years later people are catching on-about time.

Straight up. Its awesome to feel represented on screen lol
THIS...IS...ISHTAR!!!
"I don't understand what we did wrong..."
Still one of my all time favorite movies. So bad it's AMAZING.
I think it came out at the same time as other most popular movies.
Some people will never be front-men; but you still better pay them....
My favorite part is when Dustin hits Warren's foot with the mike stand.
I think this whole movie is my favorite part plus the arms deal
.. soo, let's get back to topic, the Star Wars Holiday Special!
Now back to 9/11
Rogers & Clark live in concert....great album!....

I mean there’s the fact that Dustin Hoffman the sexual assaulted is in it
And you call yourself a wizard?!? 😅
It cost too much for a comedy.
It was ahead of its time

Ishtar is one of my all-time favorite movies!
The first hour of Ishtar is brilliant. Most people are/too stupid to get it.
I get it...... still crap
I like the part where Bea Arthur is singing and dancing in the Cantina.
Keyboard Warrior or Zaat walks around in tennis shoes
Some people just like to eat shit and the rest of us just like to laugh and watch you do it.
The last hour is pretty fucking great too though.
1:40 Dylan Baker randomly sitting in the audience, astonished at what's unfolding in front of him.
It looks like this movie was decades ahead of it's time
This is a master piece
This clip could stand alone as the greatest piece of media ever created.
So great! So many great tunes and bits in this movie, nice post.
One of the best movies ever. Thanks for posting!
Is that Dylan Baker at 1:41 !?
It sure looks like it!
Best movie ever. Always loved it, always will.

thank you. this is a freakin' FUNNY movie and i crack up even before they start singing. beatty and hoffman are BRILLIANTLY funny in this film!!!
Not dubbed. Energetic and Earnestly over done😂The comic timing is at a miracle level. Gush, gush, gush.
"I don't understand what we did wrong"
There are Dick Tracy singing and Mumbles playing the bongoes! Sorry, wrong movie...
Is it just me or the blu ray version cuts the song? When they sing “please, hold my hand” is not in it, although I remember watching it 🤔
