My brother introduced me to this film in 1992 before booking our first ski trip. It turned out to be a movie that changed our life. We would watch this movie 4 or 5 times a day and became obsessed with mountains and adventure. 20 years on i'm yet to see such an inspirational ski movie! My children will see this film and hopefully theirs!
Anyone who calls themselves a skier needs to watch this masterpiece. Dudes were sending stuff on 205's that dudes with fat skis would shit themselves over. One of the best movies ever, Definitely gives you more respect for what we do on a daily basis every winter.
with a 15 pound camera instead of a 4oz gopro. ugh just the battery!! probably worked for about six minutes too. negative four degrees looks like someone pooping -4°
Scot and Glen get most of the glory but Mike Hatrup is one of the all time greats aswell...A vast majority of the awesome ski segments are of Mike too.
The film's opening jump at Chamonix is Mike--I love Mike's style of skiing as well, none of them you could mistake for the other. Glen probably has the most composed jumping technique, Scot has the most beautiful turns, and Mike looks like a powerful dude so in love with what he is doing and just barreling through the snow right on the edge.
I'm a boarder but I can appreciate crazy. The things they are doing with ski and snowboard construction these days make a huge difference. These guys were doing insane stuff on practically narrow sticks.
I had this on VHS back in the day. Skiing has been a big part of my life and all of my friends, its been a way of life. As many people have commented the change in ski design really did change skiing and make it much easier to ski off-piste. I think everyone should have to ski on a pair of old school skies at least once.
I too had this on VHS played it continuously, skiing a big part of my life, modern skis make things much easier. I don't agree everybody should try long skis, but I had a lot of fun on them.
Totally agree. Sick of this “pow obsession” from any idiot that owns a pair of skis - some of us paid our dues the hard way on rope tows, t bars, and skinny 205’s for all conditions instead of huge rocker skis that allow you to learn in 1 day.
As an ever-aging 50-year-old curmudgeon, I will always contend you haven't really skied until you've snapped into some skinny 205s and really gotten after it. If you haven't yet tried it, find some old sticks and try it. If nothing else, it will make you a better skier on those fats.
I have a pair of 203 Kastles. I still ski them occasionally, whenever the conditions are iffy. Plant your weight right over the center and fly.😁. They punch through everything.
Skied Chamonix many times. Amazing place. Back in the day I had some 210 giant slalom Kastles, they could handle everything. Also had some Dynastar verticals, like flying. Too old now to crash, but full of awesome memories.
Thabks ZZT for adding the extra depth through the music.... Changed a lot of god mates only into rock with this film.... and, we'd play it back LOUD AS. all the way through, then jumped in our cars to head of on our week annual ski massacre.... The 6 hour drive was always a highlight....
Mr. Stump's choice of music for this scene is felicitous. You can't help getting pumped up, between the skiing and ACT's "Snobbery and Decay" from their album, "1988, Laughter, Tears and Rage."
wow. best ski movie I've ever seen, past or present, hands down... you don't need fancy equipment, skis, cameras, helicopters, crews, or anything. The skiing, the snow, and the filming speak for themselves.
A group of 12 of us rented a room for 6 in Chamonix in the 1st week of 1979. Went up too that top lift. Our own video we were high pitched giggling clowns. I didn't ski down.
The best that will ever be made!! Because of this film I spent a couple of seasons in Cham and a couple in Canada. Still have the purple Spyder one piece somewhere?! Ahh, those skinny skis - only way to ski IN waist deep powder, rather than skim over it with 2 snowboards strapped to your feet. Ahhh, 30ft + cliff jumps with the hip check landing, the only way to check for rocks in the landing zone for your mates. Ahhhh, the mohawk, the only helmet you need skiing at 60-70 clicks in a VW beetle sized mogul field. Ahhhhh, Chamonix, France - where you have the right to kill yourself off a 3800m+ offpiste beast!! Ahhhhhh, the Bizzard of Ahhhhhhhs!!!
I haven't been skiing since like 93, when I was 13. Snowmass. Started snowboarding in the mid 90s. I wonder if I can still do it. Bust out my wedge techniques that I learned when I was 5 in the kids class. I don't like these weird new wide water skiis people use now. I'm not down with that. I don't understand why skiis suddenly got bigger. Looks goofy. What's the story behind all that?
Absolutely, and talk about relaxed -- that recovery of his at the very end of the clip is cosmic. He's almost never away from having his centre of mass in exactly the right place for the given moment, so that even when he loses momentary control of some other aspect, he's in such a strong position to regain it with the minimum effort that situation could conceivably require. I saw a clip of him where he said his early models were racers of the superbly technical but minimalist school, the ones who let their skis do all the work, particularly Thoeni and Stenmark, and it shows.

Your so right.... this is the beginning of ski movies
The greatest ski film ever, genius Direction, good old days.

Can't believe that I managed to find this in here!! God,recorded this on video in the 90's! Absolutely loved it!!
Back watching again, as we stuck in lock down just searching for AHHH's
snobbery and decay (extended version) performed by ACT

I remember borrowing my step dad's friend's 225 Atomics...once...
milennials can't turn

Also, estimating that kid in the light green coat at 0:01-0:03 celebrated a 35th birthday in 2020. Hope it was as good one!
Fischer RC Supers in 210cm was my daily drivers in ‘87 at Teton Village in Jackson. Stability was king! Marker MRR’s set to 14.

Chamonix Valley.... hardest core skiing in the world... been there done it - it rocks!!!
Love it.
Each turn was a real turn. No side slipping smeared ‘turns’ even possible then
one of, if not THE greatest ski movie ever.
You're right the greatest .... It was groundbreaking....
Thabks ZZT for adding the extra depth through the music.... Changed a lot of god mates only into rock with this film.... and, we'd play it back LOUD AS. all the way through, then jumped in our cars to head of on our week annual ski massacre.... The 6 hour drive was always a highlight....
These were the best movies they taught me how to ski just by watching them

I worshipped Scott and Glen back in the day.... This clip is like a psilocybin flash back! Much love for the post...
6:26 Scot not falling shows how fucking amazing he was at skiing
Everybody who is a professional skier or who has been associated with skiing has seen this movie over and over again.
Best Ski movie ever
Cast, music, story
Amazing
wow.

I didn't ski down.
This movie is STILL some of the best ski porn ever filmed.
The best that will ever be made!!

North Face one-pieces and 204cm slalom skis!
Vintage Plake is badass
I did the exact same thing in 1992. Almost died.
Good times.
I thank God for skiing.

@SWest00072 Ride to the top and spend the rest of the morning skiing down-into a different country. Sweet!
Greatest ski movie of all time! Long live Plake, Schmidt, and Stump!
Back to the days of longer is better. What would Glen have done with this year's selection?
Hip check on those 205's
The best!
Even better the sx82 rear entry ski boots! Mights as well have been wearing wellies!
that helmet cam tho
'exceptional place to search for aahs'
I wonder how they kept that helmet cam from freezing back in the day
scott schmidt still has the best form ive ever seen.

"and so our heroes go to France, the land of the Free and the home of the Brave".....
Amazing!
"Les Grand Moteeeeeeeeeeee'" ----> "Les Grand Mot"
When hair mattered, and helmets did not!
1:58 Glen Plake my man
Was this a Stump film?
In New Zealand, it's refered to as "the no stupid law" if you die doing something stupid, it's your fault😃👍❤️

Best ski movie ever !! stumpy always made wazza's movie's look pretty average
Real men ski 200cm+😎🔥
Music is too loud! Why????
The original gopro.
Any1 knows about Jim Moran?
Crank the 205's.........
Is it just me, or does the skiing seem more outdated than the music?
Schmidt/Plake FTW!!
What's the song btw 7:00 to 8:00?
Hi, it is called Snobbery and Decay by Act
Awesome! Thanks man!
