It was selected by Neighbours cast member Kylie Minogue, who thought the song was lyrically "beautiful". I think you're right, this isn't necessarily in his wheelhouse vocally, BUT I think that's a big part of why it works emotionally. The story and the context of the song are a big part of it. He was a hard man, a rock singer, and he was putting himself out there with a different style, so it feels genuine. Also the genuineness is enhanced because because it's not sung in a technically perfect way. I knew some blokey guys in the 80s who were willing to admit they liked this song just because it was Angry Anderson...and maybe if it had more polish on it, that wouldn't have been the case.
You reacted to him with his band, Rose Tattoo a few weeks ago, they were a very tough and rough rock-blues band. This song was the complete opposite of the type of stuff he sings in Rose Tattoo. Angry has a great voice when he sings his usual genre, but they used reverb because this was the 80s when reverb was popular in pop songs and the idea was to try and break Angry into the mainstream, something that Moms and Dads would like and be happy with their kids listening to it. This song is more like something that Celine Dion would sing, rather than a gravel voiced hard rocking blues singer, but it was his biggest commercial hit ever.

When I first heard this, I was surprised that Angry could sing a Ballard, especially for the legendary Aussie soap wedding. His voice is 'what you hear, is what you get', especially when, back in the day there was no such thing as auto tune. 🤗👍
