Ardhanareeswara Stotram by Shankaracharya Lyrics and Meaning
Champeya gaurardha sharira kayai
Karpura gaurardha sharirakaya
Dhammilla-kayai cha jathadharaya
Namah Shivayai cha Namah Shivaya (1)
I bow to the form
Where half of the form of Goddess Parvati was with the complexion of the Champaka flowers and
the other half of God Shiva is present with a complexion like that of camphor
The form, where the half of the head (of Parvati) is braided beautifully with a chignon, while the other half (of God Shiva) is with the matted hair
I bow to you, Goddess Parvathi and God Shiva in the form of Ardhanareeswara
Kasturika Kumkuma charchitayai
Chitha rajah punja vicharchithaya
Kruthasmarayai vikrutasmaraya
Namah Shivayai cha Namah Shivaya (2)
I bow to the form
The side of Goddess Parvathi is smeared with Kasturi’s scents (Kasturi musk) and other Kumkumas.
While the half of God Shiva is smeared with the Chitha Bhasma (ashes from the funeral pyre)
The form that’s with splendid looks (with adorned jewels and clothes) on the side of Parvati and with the dreadful looks (due to elephant skin, tiger skin, and serpents) on the side of Shiva
I bow to you, Goddess Parvathi and God Shiva in the form of Ardhanareeswara
Jhanat-kvanat kankana nupurayai
Padabja rajat phanai nupuraya
Hemanga dayai bhujagangadaya
Namah Shivayai cha Namah Shivaya (3)
I bow to the form
In which the half of Goddess Parvati is adorned with the pleasant sound making ornaments worn on the wrists (Kankanas) and those of ankles (Nupuras)
While in the other half, the lotus feet of God Shiva adorned with the serpents as the anklets
The excellent form, where the half of Parvati is with the ornaments of Gold, while the other half (of Shiva) is adorned with serpents as ornaments
I bow to you, Goddess Parvathi and God Shiva in the form of Ardhanareeswara
Vishala neelothphala lochanayai
Vikaasi pankeruha lochanaya
Samekshanayai vishamekshanaya
Namah Shivayai cha Namah Shivaya (4)
I bow to the form
Where the eyes of Goddess Parvathi are with a great look, long, extended, and looking like the blue lotuses (neelothphala flower) and
The eyes of God Shiva are looking bright like the blossomed red lotuses
The composite form of the two-eyed Goddess and the three-eyed God
I bow to you, Goddess Parvathi and God Shiva in the form of Ardhanareeswara
Mandara mala kalitalakayai
Kapalamala-amkitha kandharaya
Divyambarayai cha digambaraya
Namah Shivayai cha Namah Shivaya (5)
I bow to the form
In which the hair of Goddess Parvati is decorated with the garland of Hibiscus flowers and
the neck of the God Shiva is adorned with the garland of skulls
O the extraordinary form in which the goddess side is with the great garments, while the other half of God Shiva is without any clothing
I bow to you, Goddess Parvathi and God Shiva in the form of Ardhanareeswara
Ambodhara shyamala kuntalayai
Thatithprabha tamra jathadharaya
Nireeshwarayai Nikhileshwaraya
Namah Shivayai cha Namah Shivaya (6)
I bow to the form
Where the hair of Goddess Parvathi is with the black colour like that of water-bearing dark clouds
While the hair locks of God Shiva are looking shining in the colour of copper
O the one who doesn’t have a superior being over him, who is the great God and the God of the entire cosmos
I bow to you, Goddess Parvathi and God Shiva in the form of Ardhanareeswara
Prapancha srustyun mukhalaasya kayai
Samasta samharaka tandavaya
Jagath Jananyai Jagadeka Pitre
Namah Shivayai cha Namah Shivaya (7)
I bow to the form
By which the creation of the cosmos begins with the gentle smile on the face of Goddess Parvati and
By which the entire cosmos will get reunited back to the Shivaa by the tandava dance
O the Mother and the Father of the Cosmos
I bow to you, Goddess Parvathi and God Shiva in the form of Ardhanareeswara
Pradeeptha ratnojwala kundalayai
Spuran maha-pannaga bhushanaya
Shivaanvithayai cha Shivaanvitaya
Namah Shivayai cha Namah Shivaya (8)
I bow to the form
Of which the Parvathi’s form is looking resplendent with the precious gem studded earrings
And the form of God Shiva is looking great wearing the great serpents as his ornaments
O the one who united with Shiva (Goddess Parvathi) and the one who united with Shivaa (God Shiva)
I bow to you, Goddess Parvathi and God Shiva in the form of Ardhanareeswara
Phalastuti
Ethatpathe asthakamishtadam yo-

Ithi Srimat Paramahamsa Parivrajakaacharyasya
Sri Govindabhagavathapujya pada shishyasya
Srimat Shankara Bhagavathaha kruthou
Ardhanareeshwara stotram sampoornam
Thus completes the Ardhanareeswara stotram composed by Sri Adi Shankara, the disciple of the honorary Sri Govinda bhagavatpada, who is titled Paramahamsa parivrajakacharya (wandering supreme teacher with pure and transcendence knowledge).
Ardhanareeswara Stotram Benefits
Ardhanareeswara Stotram is considered as one of the sacred stotras as the form says that both God Shiva and Goddess Parvati are one and the same and are inseparable.
As per the Shiva Maha Purana the Ardhanareeswara form was first appeared before Lord Brahma to enlighten him on the creation. The appearance of this form during the Sage Bhringi’s offerings also shows the importance and says Shiva and Shakthi are one and the same.
Ardhanareeswara stotram benefits are clearly explained in the phalastuti part, that this great hymn improves you and makes you a great being, gives long life, great honour.
The palastuti part also mentions that reciting the stotram with great devotion will bring auspiciousness and good fortune in life. Also, you can get the divine bliss of the both God Shiva and Goddess parvathi when you reciting the stotram by understanding the meaning and visualizing the form.
This performance has surpassed all limitations of art and reached the realm of spiritual ecstacy. Sir you are the greatest and most blessed male dancer of our country in my opinion.
Sophia sanligaros and you in a shiva parvathi dance would be so out of this world.
i will watch it again for sure. how many times i am gonna watch this i dont know. i will watch again and again
Excellent! Perfect blend of energy combined with stillness. One of the best interpretations of the Ardhanareeshwarashtakam.
Sir you are dancing like a living nataraj.... I have no word in my stalk to express my reactions, ...
It's like watching Lord Shiva Dance
This performance seems so true to the intention of the dance. At the end of it, I was left with such adoration to Sadashiva, and I completely forgot about the dance and the dancer. Thank you. For the dance to be truly effective, you have to disappear, and you seem to have done this really well. Hats off to you and thank you for this experience.
You are one of the very few male dancers I like. Usually male dancers' movements are so soft they look female, but your technique is strong without being rough. Awesome dance!!!
Maatkara1000 absltly right
Exactly, you said right, I just thought that he is neither presented it as rough as a make nor like a woman.. awesome performance, postures, expression & perfection..loved it
Well, that's primarily because this dance is about the male element of the nature, Shiva. And one where you see male dancers with soft feminine motions is a different classical form based on the female energy, Radha, where it is assumed that every single entity in this universe is form of female element 'Radha' and the only male element is Krishna(almighty) which she seeks.

I agree. I've seen great dancers acting both masculine and feminine when they depict different characters(I generally watch Odissi though. Can't confirm for Bharatanatyam dancers. But I guess it must hold true for Bharatanatyam as well). But I admit that inexperienced dancers sometimes aren't able to balance both sides of the spectrum and appear more effeminate than required. I recently watched an Odissi recital by the maestro late Shri Kelucharan Mohapatra on RUclips. He depicts Radha and performs gracefully(an ashtapadi from Jayadeva's Gita Govinda). But no one can say that he overstepped the balance. It's simply a treat to the eyes. How do you find this one?-ruclips.net/video/qCMJnsFPaQI/видео.html
He performed this somewhere towards the end of his life. I can't imagine how exquisite a dancer he must have been in his youth. So sad that I couldn't see him live😔😭
There's no male and female in dance atleast do make gender distinction in the divine form
Ohhhh....My god...!!!!!!!

Ohh ..what a sight to behold. What an energy and yet stillness. Such refined movements, especially the mudras. Soft and strong (both simultaneously), yet masculine where needed. Such a divine presence you are. Hypnotized me. I bow down before you sir. I bow down.

Stunning. You're amazing dancer. Your beautiful soul appear through your body and choreography. I so want to learn Bharatanatyam dance since I saw videos on RUclips recently but there is no more Indian Dance class in my area ( Honolulu, Hawaii ). Hope someday you will visit Honolulu for workshop and teach us.
This is not Bharata Natyam as created by the Thanjavur Quartet Parampara, this is an acrobatic Indian dance, movements are from Bharata Natyam and there are postures (karana's) the choreography is weak. Where is the rhythmic that makes the original art so great!! Music is weak not suitable for a choreography if not reworked to suit the choreography! He can be a good dancer but he need a good master! I think the Kishna brothers are powerful and brilliant artists I was lucky to see them performing in Auroville, and they are from the Netherlands.
So artistically very weak dance choreography which we are bombarded with the reason also why the original Thanjavur Quartet BN became a mass production, an highly artistic temple and royal art is now almost gone because people are to lazy to undergo the hard training of the technical part of the art!
wow! is so clean and perfect.. i cant say anything negative! The dance and the way you dance is so powerful..!!! As a girl, i find it very attractive!!!!
Wow! This one of the best performances I have seen ever. Beautifully conceptulised, composed, choreographed...everything is just amazing.
Thank you Sir for this one, anyways it's always a pleasure, and lot if content to study and learn everytime one sees your work.
Now this is absolute perfection and sublime humble brilliance!!!! and he does not need to call himself Gora anything. I must get him to dance in my country.
