It's amazing the effort, expense and equipment that went into making a watch which is almost as accurate as a solar powered, waterproof Casio for $100. (it receives signals from atomic clocks) Clocks and watches were invented to tell the time; today it costs $16 to have an accurate timepiece.
Whatever they say, a watch like this is a jewel first and a time piece second. It is more or less the men's version of a diamond necklace. The sheer beauty and craftsmanship going into a piece like this is without equal. And it might even be the most accurate time keeper, apart from atomic clock solutions. But if keeping time was so important, they could also buy a Casio. The owners could care less about time, they care about excellence.
The lesson of the video is, 1) Craft out something fine (is ok to be unnecessary, the most important thing is show the passionate and handcrafted) 2) Marketing, telling how expensive the product could be. Make it famous. If possible, telling how long the brand established, even the figure is nothing much related to the quality. People will just perceive that must be good anyhow. 3) Those social racer (who trying to tell people they just can afford expensive things) will just buy it. Win win strategy. You get the money, they get the fame.
My Patek may be a bit older and simpler, but I love it no less. It keeps better time than any watches I’ve ever bought - Rolexes, Omega, Cartier, Blancpain, etc.
Tbh, even all the prettiness, Grand Seiko have much better prices while providing the great movements they hand assemble (MOVEMENTS NOT WATCHES) and watches too, Check out a Grand Seiko, its relatively affordable. Don't forget they were founded just after AP and 2 decades before Rolex.
It is commendable that few historical firm are still investing in this art. And that the product is indeed is a luxury reserved to few is also understandable. But is also true that compared to new technologies is like wanting to travel on a highway with a Ford T model. Also fashionable but impractical.
My Patek is close to it's 70th birthday. It keeps better time than my; Rolex, Vacheron ,Baume Capeland Chrono, Cartier Pascha Chronograph, AND, just about ALL the wrist watches in my collection. The only timepiece that I own matches the accuracy of my Patek is even OLDER . It is a pocket watch w/39 jewels as a high grade railroad watch. It is a pain to keep winding that watch due to the fact the fact you need you need to open the back of the case to wind it. The design of the plates are consistent with a Waltham in the US . The marking on the plate is: PT0004. I've not be able to trace that.
Great video and incredibly insightful. Please in future consider less “facts” - it’s great, however quite infuriating considering that it actually detracts from the entertainment of the video.
yep, not "hand" made, but machined by million dollar machining tools..... i agree, a little lame, pure hand etched hand cut would really be crazy but prolly cost 10x more!!, check out some china watches with a open mind
Citizen Eco-Drive watches have been my favored watches since soon after they hit the market. Not as expensive as many other brands but just as attractive and precise. Bought a new one 2 months ago. Set its various functions and haven’t lost a second yet.
Forget the $500,000 dollar Patek Philippe that will have to be completely disassembled every five years for service at a cost of $5000 dollars to keep it functioning. My Grand Seiko Spring Dive cost $5,800 dollars and never needs to serviced ever and only gains one second per day, when the Patek loses are gains three seconds per day. Now what really the best timepiece in the world Grand Seiko!
But thats kinda a cheat because spring drive works with technology from Quartz watches. So its not a fair comparison. But i get what you're saying. However then you could also say that my 30€ Casio is the better watch.
@@tesmat1243 right. I don't have any experience but maybe the movement actually doesn't need servicing. But not because it doesn't wear out. It probably still does, but because the Quarz part of the watch regulates the speed of the watch, it can go against the changing speed that comes from worn out parts
Can you imagine being an engraver and showing up to work hungover and messing up a few of the gold case engravings?! That's too much pressure! I wonder how much they make?
Rather than listening to monotonous music watching this video, I think it would be a lot more informative. If there was someone explaining a little bit about the watch and how it’s made..
The only thing that you cannot purchase with $1M in a watch is good taste. I much prefer my 3 hand manual wind Patek to these vulgar monstrosities the size of a small clock.

@@nickacelvn if one can afford this thing then this is most likely a round off error in their earnings. Btw...rich folks try not to own anything...this would be owned by their company and somehow be made into a depreciating asset that gets written off.
You can't question the potential of ownership of a Patek. I've made a bit of money purchasing their smaller ladies movements that were made in the 1920's & 1930's. I've found that some of these older watches need no more than a cleaning.
Hold on, 50.000 watches per year and it is takes 12 monts for the craftsman to build one of them. Is that means Patek have 50.000 craftsmas? This is bloody big factory. Almost like in China.
OK, I can imagine if you even have a hint of a cold you can't come to work or you shouldn't. Imagine one wrong sneeze. Expensive stuff be flying into the nether world!
I am surprised that the watchmaker is not wearing finger cots around 10:30. I am surprised also that loupes (and contorted positions) are used instead of microscopes. Possibly - hopefully for their eye and back health - this is just staged for the video.

I think you need to get your numbers corrected. PP MIGHT make 4000 to 5000 annually, but 50,000 is clearly not correct. These are finely manufactured watches not auto mufflers.
Amazing engineering and craftsmanship . But the watch is just to dam big. You would look like some tasteless rapper with that alarm clock on your wrist.

This precision is just insane.
I'm 110% positive they did.

Amazing how many gears are involved. Very nice piece of art.
Thank you :-).
A view from the UK. I just love the way this video keeps referring to Rolex for comparison. Could Rolex be their main competitor?.....NO!
I know! Rolex are decent, tough, middle tier watches; but there’s nothing in any of their models that’s a fair comparison with an even simple Patek.
The picture is wonderful.
However, the orange tag is in the way.
Pretty cool what did they do before cnc?
right, in this video they pretend that there is handicraft, needlework, but actually, is all done by CNC robots
that went away...this is just machining making machines...lost the handicraft
Too bad the music is louder then anything otherwise a great video.
