Yes the French coins are a little on the small side. Personally I like the French Angel coin too. Probably my favorite vintage gold coin is the Danish Frederik VIII 20 Kroner coin. It's a decent size (just over 1/4 oz gold, 8.96 gram in total (.900). If you get a good sample and study it with a technical loupe you'll be amazed of how many fine details especially the shield has. Far more and far finer details than I believe any other coin - modern or not. One comes close and thats the Christian X gold coins but they're just Frederik VIII's design updated with new king. Modern coins in contrast are dump boring beside it - clearly ugly computer jobs.
My favorite bullion coin has to be the Krugerrand. Perhaps not the best (any which parameter you look at you can always find one that is better - not that it matter) but it's the original, has a great design, and I have great memories of my child hood in South Africa as we lived there a couple of years while my dad helped building a concrete factory. Also I like that it has no denomination - there's something honest about it instead of a low fixtional value required by some obscure law.
FUN FACTS!
* The Danish Krone (crown) was defined as 1 Kg fine gold equals 2480 Kr - thus the mentioned 20 Kr coins contains about 8.06 gram of fine gold.
* The French Franc was defined as 100 Franc equals 1000/31 gram of .900 gold. Thus 1 Franc is roughly 0.29 gram of fine gold - you can calculate as many decimals or whatever fractional representation you want yourself.

yo, the edge has a different lettering, and a different motto original will have Lettering: * DIEU * PROTEGE * LA * FRANCE
