    Explaining how to tell whether it is a restrike or an original
    If the coin has "L" to the left of the date and "B" to the right of the date, it is a restrike.
    If the date only has a "B" it is an original

    Since the devaluation decision of 1936, based on emergency law, did not provide for a fixed gold parity, in contrast to the Coinage Act of 1931, these coins were given the year "1935" to indicate that they had the fineness required by the Coinage Act. It was also hoped that this would avoid speculation about the origin of the gold. In order to be able to distinguish these pieces from those minted in 1935 and to underline the character of the merchandise, the letter "L" (lingot = bullion) was placed in front of the year "1935". Until the beginning of 1947, only gold bars that had been in the possession of the Swiss National Bank before 1939 were used for minting. In the spring of 1947 the pre-war stocks were exhausted. The Swiss National Bank therefore allowed post-war gold, e.g. from Russian stocks. A total of 20,008,813 20-Franc Coins were minted with the year "L 1935", of which 3.5 million in 1945, 7,108,813 in 1946 and 9.4 million in early 1947. Greetings from Switzerland and thanks for the Video :)

    Cool. That made the decision for me, thank! A local antique dealer has both 1935 LB and 1947 B at nice prices (spot + a few %) and they both appear to look great. Think the 1947 is the one to get then - not that any has or will gain numismatic value in the nearer future but still...

      Is it a "B" or "L B" ? im not familiar with any 20 franc Helvetia originals ever being minted in 1933. If it has L B, then maybe they restruck it, but it usually restrikes have the 1935 date. You probably need to get it checked out as a potential fake...

    I gather restrike is not valuable above the price of gold ... what would the premium be for a non restrike 1935 or 1947. Thanks for your opinion

    These coins are 'Goldvreneli', not 'Helvetia', even though Helvetia is written on them. There are in fact 'Helvetia' coins too, they were minted from 1883 to 1896 and have a different design. and one more additional information to what you already mentioned about the coins from 1935 with the L-mintmark: they were minted in 1945, 1946 and 1947

    • @drdragonkick5251
      @drdragonkick5251  9 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the comment. I can see the case you make, although pcgs includes the 1883-96 as Helvetia too. The word ‘Helvetica’ like the font is written on those 83-96 coins. For these post 1896 the word Vreneli is the affectionate diminutive form of the common female name verena.. she’s like the consecrated virgin of Switzerland-like our US lady liberty. Anyhow, tomato tomat0

      The original strikes, for most if not all years, were 'pickled' in acid briefly. This pickling would dissolve the copper alloyed with the gold (the coin was struck on 90% gold blanks) which would eave the surface of the coin with ammore pure god color versus the reddish color of 90% gold/10% copper.

    You checked the 49 to see if its original. you can only get a 1949 original. When would the 49 restrike take place if they stopped in 49? :p i enjoyed this vid. I didnt know abt the L

    • @drdragonkick5251
      @drdragonkick5251  2 года назад

      Valid observation as that makes sense for that year lol. From what I've researched, they made many restrikes in 1949, but I interpret this as they would likely have marked an earlier date on it like the 1935 with the LB, but i'm not 100% positive they didnt/wont mint more after 49..

    Its not a restrike .. how can it be a restrike when its before 1949 (original). Restrikskes are always after the whole production. In this case it would bei in the 1950's or seomthing like that.. the l 1935B were produced after WW2. They used gold bars from WW2 that L says it. After the gold bars were alle used they continued with production without L

    • @drdragonkick5251
      @drdragonkick5251  3 года назад

      Not sure exactly which you are referring to, but per the video the only restrike was the 1935 L B shown. Restrikes are struck from original dies at a later year. The whole production of the 1935 coin had passed before that coin was made and yes could have been in the 50s and struck with a retroactive date.
