Billy Corgan is one of the nicest guys in Rock n Roll. During the Gish tour in '91 they were playing a gig at the I-beam club in San Franciso. Me and my band at the time really wanted to go but were all broke and couldnt afford tickets. It just so happned that Billy Corgan went into the store my drummer worked at and bought a pair of Doc Martins off of him. When Billy found out we were a broke struggling band and all wanted to go to the show he put my entire band on his personal guest list. It was a kick ass show! Thanks again Billy! Pure class.

lol I've actually been given the bird by him. Spotted him at Walt Disney World and snapped a few photos. Last one, he was looking right at me, giving me the finger. Later found out it was his birthday that day! I'll never forget it. I don't think he was being mean at all, because he never even made a face, just gave me the finger.

I remember seeing them in college. They came on right after the opening act ... some new band called Pearl Jam ... and played an amazing set before headliners Red Hot Chili Peppers took the stage. Man, the 90s were a great time for music!
Saw that show at Michigan State University! I think it cost a whopping 5 bucks for that show.
I saw this in Houston, Tx.
I can't remember exactly where I saw that show it was somewhere near Baltimore.I went and bought 10 after hearing Pearl Jam after they played like 20 minutes as the number 3 band.

What I love about Billy's solos is that he sounds like he is squeezing the life out of his guitar with his emotions.
The guy is a genius and utterly driven to perfection. Alas, not the rest of his band mates.

I was a 20 year old drummer living in South Chicago suburbs and was completely blown away by Billy and Jimmys performance on Gish. It is the greatest drum parts ever within the coolest, slickist, powerful songs Billy wrote. They peaked at Jumpstreet

James Iha is such a boss. He and Billy were the greatest guitar duo of the 90s. Please don't flame my opinion.

Danny Maciel Yes, but only in studio version, Billy recorded all guitars and bass too in mellon colie & the infinite sadness except drums and keyboards.

@@nickfanzo Doesn't necessarily mean she sucks, just that Billy simply could play it in the studio perfectly in much fewer takes (dude's a major perfectionist when it comes to his art, plus you've seen the way he can shred on guitar alone - he definitely knows a thing or two about bass playing.) You also gotta remember that time in the recording studio isn't cheap at all even by today's standards, even more so in the early '90s when they recorded this shit and were essentially broke ass amateurs with no real dough coming in yet.
Nicholas Fanzo nothing to be ashamed about. I played in a metal band and my guitar player wrote a bass intro for a song he wrote and we had him record it in the studio and I played the rest and obviously live. No shame and no big deal

here we are worshipping Jimmy's work. a few years ago I read an interview saying that Jimmy has a hard time playing the early stuff coz he finds his old drumming really cringy. This guy is on a whole other level. he never stopped growing as a musician.
@rajivaksha dasa interesting enough I just learned from Billy's most recent video on the channel that Billy actually wrote the opening drum riff on this one and Jimmy beat it out of the kit.

The memories this album conjures up are super magical. This was right before Nevermind came out, and was definitely admired by Kurt. Gives me Super-Chills.
Both were produced by Butch Vig.
My personal experience... Smashing Pumpkins were what motivated me where Hendrix, Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd left off. So much power and new found directions.

I seriously can't believe this wasn't their "break through" album, its the first one I heard from them and I mean Siamese Dream was cool, but this was who they were.
I think when they did Siamese Dream the timing was right and they had major label support. Plus the glossy production. Gish was maybe a year early and wasn't as polished a sound. Still a killer album, but it wasn't their time yet. They were still making a name for themselves. It's a slow rise to the top paid off with hard work and lots of small club tours.
Gish came out in May, about 5 months later the release of Nevermind changed the whole game and caused a tidle wave.
A real shame some people only know them for 1-2-maybe3 songs. God, they were amazing
Same here.. I saw them on the Siamese tour and was disappointed they didn't play anything from Gish.
I mean it sold over 200k copies on its first run. That's kinda huge.
Probably the best Smashing Pumpkins album there ever was. I was fortunate to be a chicagoan who was living next to Wicker Park where they played in small venues a lot. When I first saw them I don't think they have an album following guess yet or wasn't out anyway

+Belly Corgan Gish=Siamese Dream=Pisces Iscariot=Mellon Collie. Picking a favorite from these 4 is like asking a parent which one of his children he likes most. Every single one of these albums is amazing in it's own way, even the so callled "B sides" album
I prefer Gish and SD over MCiS
IMO, Gish is their best album. It was all downhill from there.

This video certainly brings back memories. I remember seeing them perform in a dingy basement club, also known as a fire trap, in Denver when this was released. Even then, I knew they were destined for greatness (sometimes).
That guitar tone is so iconic. There’s no question as to who’s playing
Billy and the Strat is so iconic and epic. I love this album so much.
It’s a shame that a band / album like this could never come along today, and generations of folks growing up will never experience what an asset stuff like this was throughout childhood/teenage years.

NOTE: I am not saying Dale is a bad drummer, but I wouldn't put him in the top 10
I'd still take Danny Carey! They are both master drummers but Carey is such a great composer and live drummer. I love Jimmy though, it's a fair pick.

Remember I was going to a concert in 1991? in Copenhagen, Pumpehuset, where "Smashing Pumpkins" were the warmup act to some english band, can't remember their name, but "Smashing Pumpkins" stole the show. Bought the vinyl (Gish) and introduced the band to my friends who was totally blown away.
This album should have been platinum

Such good memories. I remember hearing them on a college radio station in Chicago. I think they played SIVA. I went out and saw them the next chance I had.
This was a great album but Siamese is still my favorite by a little bit. It is a shame this album doesn’t get more recognition though.
