    Hey everyone. One minor flaw in this video I've gotten comments about. Pictured is a short RAM intake, instead of a cold air intake. My apologies, I wasn't paying attention when selecting the picture. Also, the spark plugs did NOT give me 55hp; it was from the tune. The spark plugs were necessary in order for the tune to work properly.Hope you enjoy :)

      spark plugs ?

      He had his car professionally tuned.. Meaning ecu is hooked up to a separate computer and car runs multiple times on a dyno machine.. the spark plugs were probably required for the extra power creating more fuel combustion... $10 for spark plugs.. He neglected to mention the extra $500-$1000+ for cost of tune and engine management...

    • @ericrichard4398
      @ericrichard4398 7 лет назад +8

      500-1000? wow...were do you get your cars tuned lol. ecu is hooked up to a computer....it is reprogrammed...and done. or you can send your ecu core in and have it returned to you. 150-300 bucks and all done. No multiple dyno runs...and sure as hell no 500-1000 cost. lol

    • @AutoAutopsy
      @AutoAutopsy  7 лет назад +5

      The spark plug gain was from the tune. I just needed different spark plugs to get the tune. Should have clarified :)

    • @ericrichard4398
      @ericrichard4398 7 лет назад +1

      i did the same. With my tune they recommend I changed the plugs every 3 oil changes or so. But I have about 12k on mine with the tune and the plugs still look good. Still using NGK...but not the ones for 11 bucks a pop anymore lol. Im running Ngk 1095 now

    One great "mod" to consider that everyone seems to overlook is a good set of tires. Adding power does nothing if it can't get to the ground.

      Good point, but good performance tires can be EXPENSIVE!

    • @AngrySEMopar
      @AngrySEMopar 7 лет назад +11

      You're right. And with that, don't get rims that are too heavy! Also read tests about which tire size tests the best. It's not often 20". If you have 22s, don't even worry about "performance tires". They are too heavy and don't turn as well. Sometimes heavier wheels can feel more planted. But name one performance car that has 22s standard. Like a Porsche, lets say.

    I let air out my tires to go faster, also put less oil in the engine, less coolant and run it on less than a quarter tank of fuel. Remove front wipers and washer fluid reservoir. All of this leads to less weight within the car and engine therefore it will go faster.
    It's been proven that removing the indicator bulbs along with the brake bulbs will effectively give you upto 5bhp (dependant on your car), as they take up a lot of electrical power, and as we all know, electrical power becomes heavy.
    If you're serious about going faster and being lighter, drain all the transmission fluid out and put only a cap full back in. It will stay lubricated but won't slosh around causing unbalance.
    I currently run my car as above but I also cut parts of the frame out my car as I don't think I needed them. If it looks useless... Cut it!

    another free mod is drive fast while everyone else is driving slow 😂😭 hahah

  • @fromach
    @fromach 6 лет назад +9

    A more simplistic way to take care of both the exhaust mods(depending on how strict your state is) is to take your car to a local exhaust shop and get yourself a custom straight piped exhaust or a custom exhaust with high flow mufflers if you're concerned with noise. On the subject of tunes, I would highly recommend getting your flex fuel vehicle tuned out of either E85 or pure gas. Flex fuel vehicles will always be tuned to work only OK with either fuel and not excellent on one of them. I recommend looking around at your local gas stations and seeing if there is enough(or, close enough to be comfortable with only going to one station) stations with E85 and deciding on whether to tune purely for ethanol or to tune out the ethanol capability entirely. Either way will improve both fuel economy and overall performance.

    Somebody finally mentioned a bigger throttle body! I feel like they are so underrated. I have a short ram intake, bigger throttle and intake manifold to start out my little build. My car makes 140 from the factory and I beat turbo Audis and Jettas all day. not impressive I know but my point is they make a big difference on a relatively light car

    THE most important is keep your tires inflated to specs. PS some of your suggestions (especially throttle body) will really screw up your electronics (especially if you have drive-by wire instead of cable) and getting a tuned compensation engine chip(s) for the beefed-up throttle is really expensive if the installer/or you only have a passing acquaintance with the programming aspect of it or how one change in the whole effects other systems.

  • @rjallenbach1
    @rjallenbach1 5 лет назад +2

    Basically it all boils down to more air in at a faster rate + more exhaust at a faster rate = more power!!!
    These are some of the best mods you can do, you are essentially freeing up lost power with not much additional strain on the motor.
    I haven’t done much with my 9-3 yet but it did come from the factory with a tune for more boost, I like that.
    Before exhaust I plan suspension upgrades

    One thing to keep in mind with superchargers is that they give you immediate torque where as with turbos you have to wait for them to spool, that's why such things as twincharging exist which involve both turbos and superchargers or if your not into twincharging go for a Bi-turbo setup....

    • @AutoAutopsy
      @AutoAutopsy  7 лет назад

      Very true!

    • @epsilon4052
      @epsilon4052 2 года назад

      Superchargers parasitic load really kills the power curve on the top end though. Thats why in my opinion variable compound turbo setups work the best.

    Hi, loving your videos so far, i am too considering a saab but i'm still doing my research about it.
    Everything that is quirky about it makes me love it more, to me the saab has got a soul, it has character, not just some boring corolla.
    A suggestion is to have your videos with lists to have video timelines in the description and big letters detailing the number in the video. the reason i say this is that so that people can skip parts that don't apply to them.
    If I do end up with one, I wonder if we can do a Saab meet =)

    "Cold Air Intakes" vs "Short Ram Intakes" both tend to do the same thing. Power-wise, that means little to nothing. The only reason to add one is the sound that you get. As for the exhaust, do manifold back for the most power gains, or in your case downpipe back. Adding a tune to ANY car will help your performance greatly if you get it done correctly. Don't buy a "cheap tune" from eBay, get it professionally programmed by a tuning shop. (as you did) The 55hp was from the tune, not the plugs. Just doing plugs gives you little to no extra power. It lets you keep the power you have. A larger throttle body will only help you with bigger injectors as you need more fuel to match more air. Both kinds of headers only work on N/A cars. For a turbo car, the headers are all relatively short as they only feed the turbo. Long tubes grant bigger gains all around for both ranges. Turbos and Superchargers are both awesome options. I personally prefer superchargers due to the complete lack of lag and the ease of installation/price. I much prefer the roots style instead of the centrifugal, but that is a personal preference. As for the cheap part, I don't like getting cheap products as I tend to believe that you get what you pay for on the car side of life as well as others. I'd much prefer to do the job completely and correctly once so as to not have to do it again than to use cheap parts and have to do it over alot. I don't do weight reduction myself. I like all my creature comforts and the look of the finished interior. I like finished interiors even in drag cars. To me, it's more impressive when a car can throw up a good time and keep it's nice interior. Look up hot rod drag week and you'll see a few examples of this. Mostly good advice, though I don't know how "cheap" it'll all be added up. I'd also add that it's easier to start with a standard transmission as they take less work to safely handle alot more power. Keep up the mods and good luck with the Saab.

      Again, CAIs help the engine breathe. It's not about HP. They help with throttle response. When you use it WITH an exhaust, it really comes into effect. Then add a real ECU interfaced tune and that will do even more. It's just one of those cliché "car guy" things to say about CAIs, bashing them. Because they think about tunes on 1990s four cylinders. No, they actually work well if part of an overall strategy and it's not about the hp number.

    I have been in the business of making engines work at a level that they were not designed to be used for in the planning process but I am often asked my opinion on the first place to start with regards to the an ongoing process of modifications to a certain car and over the years it has changed dramatically in the reply especially since the ecu development has gone through already its 4th generation of functional features and adjustable parameters. The reply I give now is generic and works for all engines and models. Lighten the car to the point where it is still practical for the use in which you need it but it is the cheapest way to get a performance improvement from what is essentially free power. This is what our 612bhp integrale has been through for the 3rd time and it is 0.4s quicker down the strip, composite panels are used as everything is already as light as possible so this was not a cheap option by any means but the amount of chassis response is very important for the hillclimbing series that it's used in

      that's not necessarily what i'm referring to in this video. The spark plug change was necessary give the tune i was getting and helped the car run better making more power. spark plugs themselves won't give any power gains

      Auto Autopsy it's not just handling it can improve, certain tires can make your car quicker or even a higher top speed. certain suspension set ups can help keep the wheels from spinning up during hard acceleration. brakes, well, do minimal to make your car quicker. I'm not saying these should've been in the list, but its just some more in expensive modifications for better car performance.

      Adds downforce which keeps the vehicle hugging the ground on takeoff and rounding corners which in turn does give you speed since you don't have to break as often and you aren't burning tread every time you takeoff

    Step 1: Don't make yourself a "cold air intake", cause it won't give you any power gains without a reprogram on a modern car. Most modern cars (year 2000+) have such sophisticately designed air intakes that you can tune the car to far more power before another air filter/air intake is needed.
    Step 2: If your car is a turbo car, get a 3 inch downpipe, that will get you far. Then full exhaust system when the 3 inch DP doesn't get you further. For power gains: DP, Racecat, catback, in that order.
    Step 3: Reprogram the ECU
    Step 4: Get a car with a more power, or a saab. Cause unless you drive a saab, or anything with a decent size engine and decent turbo, you won't get any gains worth mentioning from those mods.

    • @AutoAutopsy
      @AutoAutopsy  7 лет назад

      Richard Olsen you make great points! Thanks for the input!

    • @AngrySEMopar
      @AngrySEMopar 7 лет назад +9

      Your points are not that good. If you get an CAI and an exhaust, you WILL feel a difference. Those big clunky boxes are not THAT well tuned on most cars, especially not American. Just like if you add headers, it will breathe even better. It's not about HP numbers, but airflow. At least get an improved (non-paper) drop in filter. Help your engine breath and you will notice more responsiveness and better actions throughout your RPM range. Plus a drop in lasts a lifetime and standard paper filters need to be changed every year.
      Yes, an ECU tune will help. But only a REAL tune, like a Diablosport with an interface. Not some generic "chip" that you plug in and just trust.
      Also, your "Step 4" is a cute joke, but please... A SAAB is no major sports sedan. And actually, MANY, many cars would benefit from those mods.. Especially v6's and under. Most cars from 2011 are now outclassed, besides a few stand outs or something like an M-series or Porsche.
      Everybody, ignore those people who preach that a CAI and exhaust won't help. I did that to my last car and it was like a new vehicle. Certain companies put restrictive air boxes and limp exhausts on purpose. To save money or maybe so the base model isn't as desirable.
      It's not just about HP gains. That's one number. Help your engine breathe and you WILL be rewarded.

    • @AngrySEMopar
      @AngrySEMopar 7 лет назад +1

      Just make sure to buy a good CAI with a heat shield, the best heat shield you can get. That may be why some don't work well. It has to block the engine's warm air.

    Cat back exhaust does nothing for performance with these cars. The company's will tell you 10hp gain... what has to be done is 3" down from the turbo to open up the top end. Then a high flow cat to the cat back exhaust of your choice in size. Headers or runners are not needed until 450-500 hp...

    With a turbo chip, a turbo that is large enough for the neutral factor, for the vacuum. If the engine doesn't have to try, it's extra..

    You say you live in Arizona, how in the hell is it a "cold air" intake, if its 115 degrees outside!! How's that possible to have cold-air for your engine?? And as for headers, long tube headers are for torque, short headers are good for horsepower "high-end RPM"!! And for turbocharged, that's more for torque versus a blower, (supercharged) is for high-end power!!!!!!!!! Why do you think people with a tin-can Japan car ("Honda") Turbo Charge It??, because it lacks torque, plenty of it!!!!!!!!!! One more last thing, anybody that is a car person (Car Guy), mechanic, Motorhead etc. or actually knows about cars would agree with this statement; "HORSEPOWER IS FOR SHOW TORQUE IS FOR GO"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    What are the safest ways to add hp without damaging the engine? Like a cold air intake

      make sure you know what the motor can handle safely in terms of power.
