How To Catch Florida Gar. Everglades Fishing.

- I hit the Tamiami Trail for some Florida Gar. Conditions were tough and the gar were sparse. We tried fishing with cut bluegill which works great for spotted gar. Unfortunately, I had only one hit and missed the hookset. I microfished some jewel cichlids to use as live bait. I left them in front of the gar's snout with my bail open for a few minutes and got some takes.

Florida is dreamy man. Big peacock bass, gar, clown knifefish and all the exotics. And that without even mentioning saltwater
Yes it is. Might have to go every winter. I would like to get a clown knifefish.
I think this was a great fun adventure my man! I know is so exciting watching the fish even when they are not biting a lot :) the hard work paid off 👍
Thanks. Sure does.
Nice. Prehistoric looking fish and land dinosaurs. Good times
Thank-you.
Micro fishing at its best. Cool seeing the gators just hanging out. Fun trip!
Yes it was a fun trip. So many cool things to see. This was the first time I had done micro fishing. I have had the hooks for years but never was motivated to really do it before. It is fun catching the little bait fish and then using them to get bigger fish is pretty cool.
Those gators man...crazy how they were just out there chilling. You had some good music and scenes. This is a good relaxation video too.
Thank-you. I think they are used to seeing people. That big one didn't mind us at all. My friend had his bobber stuck in the tree and had to scare the gator off so he could go retrieve it.
Great video Brett with some nice shots of the wildlife. Those Gar are tough to hook.
Thank-you. They sure can be tough to hook. It's unfortunate that I get so into the fishing I forget about making a video. Such a cool part of the country and I missed getting a lot of video of it. You are lucky to live down there.
Persistence paid off!
Now that's my kind of Road Side Attraction, haha. Gar are such cool fish, and it's a whole nuther world when you have to watch for Gators, but what a thrill!
Your patience was rewarded. Nice footage of the gators. Looks like you enjoyed your trip!
I did enjoy the trip. The fishing was tough the whole time because of the fronts and all the excess water. But still we got some good fish and saw some cool stuff.
Congrats on that Florida Gar!! The weather seems so nice over there. Love that intro music. Be safe out there!
Thank-you. It was nice weather, especially compared to what I came from.
@@PeelingLine I bet it was. I’ve been out fishing several times, but keep getting skunked. Got to keep trying!!
Those gar looked super cool and so did that giant alligator! Thanks for sharing this fishing adventure. Tight lines!
The Piscatorian
Thanks, I almost walked into an aligator there about that size. Fortunately he was pretty chill and I'm still alive. 😂
Congrats on the Florida gar!
Thank-you, sir.
Had no idea gars were that beautiful! Thanks for the gar-ate video!
They are a really cool family. This was the last species I needed to have all the ones available in the US. Gonna have to go to Mexico and Cuba for the last two. I will make those trips eventually. I think the cuban gar is still trying to be recovered.
Cars passing so close is more scary than the gators. 🤣 Looks like fishing for Gar requires patience. And you got em. 😀 The micro species are cool too. Nice shot of the birds in flight while driving 👍🏻❗️
I suppose it is a bit sketchy.
Epic catch, gars are very cool
Sure are.
Nice Gar!!
Thank-you.
OMG
You have crocodile there?
Great video and music
Big liiiiiike ❤
There were gar in the canals I fished there but they never bit anything I was throwing. Now I know the key is to bring a size 32 hook lol. Nice video man
Thanks. I'm sure you don't have to go that small. I actually caught one of those tiny mosquito fish on a size 8 aberdeen hook. But 16 to 24 are easy to find at fly shops and would probably do alright.
As a kid here in Florida, I caught a lot of these gars sight fishing using a tiny hook in a strip of bacon fat. It would float on the top of the water and you gave it a few twitches and they would grab it and swallow it. Tons of fun!
That sounds like fun. I tried floating some bait but wasn't really having luck that or lures. They were just being really finicky from what everyone says about them.
You are the travelin' man! Never know where you'll be fishing! Pretty little fish. PATIENCE is the key, eh? Thanks for making and sharing!
Hopefully one day I will get over to that side and we can fish. They do require patience under the circumstances I faced but others have said they are easy to catch.
@@PeelingLine Love to fish together if you ever come this way. You are an Uber-fisherman!
@@joescarpadventures Thanks. I try.
"Well, I guess I could try"
Classic roughfish convert :)
Pretty sure has been fishing for roughfish longer than we've been alive. you should see his lake record bigmouth buffalo. Got it on doughbait too.
Nice micro fishing skills!! Smallest 'gill I ever seen haha! Those gar are pretty cool! Should of wrestled that gator though!
Thank-you. Those live baits were actually jewel cichlids. The bluegill I was cutting up was a 8 incher! I came close to wrestling one. I was walking around the bank and on my phone when I was 2 steps from walking into one.
so cool to watch your video and so many different creatures there, enjoy, more videos too .....
Thank-you.
@@PeelingLine Surf smelt fishing season now, do you find anywhere around your home basin there too?
@@ShanePingStyle Not sure. I don't even know how to fish for them.
@@ShanePingStyle I asked some people online about smelt fishing I will let you know.
A lot of traffic. But looks like you had GREAT fun.
I definitely did have a lot of fun. My wife didn't like seeing me fishing so close to the road. Especially with how fast people drive along there.
@@PeelingLine she loves you if she didn't care you would be in trouble. Go up there in the dark darling now your in trouble
@@vincentdonnellythemadfishe5158 Yeah it's hard for lots of people to find people that care. Good to be one of the lucky ones.
@@PeelingLine I ment to write the word go not the word I'm.
That looked like fun except the traffic whizzing by you on a three foot median. What other species are you after down there?
I was after all the cichlids but only got midas and oscars. I did a catch and cook I have to edit for the latter. Went tilapia fishing and saltwater fishing. Lots of work to do.
Gar are such awesome looking fish. Cool fishing in another state 👍
Yes they are. Florida has to be one of the most unique states but I enjoy fishing in all of them.
@@PeelingLine Florida does seem like it would be fishing paradise 52wks a year.
@@hookjawhunters9419 I heard otherwise from people down there. They say the summers are brutal and the hurricane season sucks too. But people will complain everywhere.
@@PeelingLine grass is always greener on the other side! I'm always hot so I think tropical humidity would kill me. My wife is actually from Florida and she said humidity and huge bugs she doesnt miss 🤣🤣
@@hookjawhunters9419 Humidity is the worst. Lots up here so a 40 degree day feels sub 30. Really chills your bones.
Cool fish. You gotta put in the work. It seems like it would be tough to get a hook to penetrate that maw.
Definitely is. They are a really cool species for sure.
I bet you could beat that gator uP!!!!! Wow nice catches dawg!!!!! Looked like a. Long well paid off day!!!!!!!!
Thanks. I don't know about beating an aligator up. With queensbury rules no problem. I just wonder how many punches to the head before he just bites your arms off. 😂 Perseverance definitely paid off. This was my #1 species I had to catch on this trip.
@@PeelingLine add a lil 'KICK' in between!!! Oh in perseverance indeed broo!!! Great job at that goal!!!!
@@LipRipperFishing215 Thanks.
Ever had any crazy encounters with gators? Crazy how they just chill there
Yeah I almost walked in to a gator at a rest stop. I was walking along the bank looking for fish and I was on my phone and there was this gator. I thought it was dead for a split second and considered kicking it but then thought it's probably not dead and jumped back and he flinched to dive in the water. Much better than getting bit.
Nope, I don’t do gators. Those gars were finicky
👍👍👍
Them toothy buggers can be difficult to get a hook into. Their weird bony snouts seem to repel hooks. lol Some people catch gar with rope lures that don't even have hooks. They just get their teeth caught in the rope. Not sure if that works for those Florida gar or not.
I have had good success with rope lures for longnose and shortnose gar. When I fished for spotted gar in Texas they didn't seem to care for the rope lures. These florida gar are very similar to spotted gar so I figured I'd just leave the rope lures at home.
Gatah gatah
Is this turner river road?
Not sure. The first spot in the video is right here (25.848513, -80.947721) and then we went west and found the second spot.
I had a lot of bites from these back when we were in Florida for that tourney. Couldn't hook up with them though because of their boney beaks.
Seems like my experience of them being sparse was the exception. From what everyone says only fishing in a hurricane would be tougher.
Can u send me a baby gar for my pond please
Sure just buy me a plane ticket and I'll get one to you.
If I had the money for a ticket I wouldn't be asking ...... It's simple just post a baby one to me I'm not asking for much
