- Welcome to 1 Day as a Tourist in Bishops Stortford!
In my latest UK Travel Vlog I visit this historic market town, beginning at Waytemore Castle with a chat about its medieval history. My next step is a walk along the ancient River Stort, the key to the town's thriving past success as a Navigated River, especially for the Malting Industry.
A short walk later I arrive at South Mills Arts for a fascinating insight into the town's past and incredible music heritage stemming from the famous Rhodes Centre! Having departed South Mills It was only fair that I dropped into the little arts workshop for a lesson in throwing pottery from Jessica before discovering remnants of the Town's Maltings within 'Millars three'
Finally I explore the town center and some great local characters before ending my trip at South Street Pantry for a superb bit of cake and tea!
Bloody Awesome!
Feel free to like and subscribe for more videos if you enjoyed this one and would love to see more of me gallivanting around the UK and getting into mischief!

My mum used to work in what is now Coopers, and i believe the tunnels used to run underneath here. I remember her telling me tales how she saw the Grey lady in these tunnels when she was worked there!
Interesting Allison, I keep hearing about the Grey lady...I think she needs some airtime! Thanks for the watch, lots more to come!
This was great!! I'm a student in America now but I'm from stortford and this was the perfect antidote to missing home! Also can confirm I've been in a blocked-off section of the tunnels, one of the houses up on windhill has a ladder down - so claustrophobic!!! Thanks so much for this awesome video! :)
Brilliant stuff, I’m glad you enjoyed it Robin! So it is possible to get into the tunnels!? How far did you get Robin? Be amazing if I could gain access!
Hi mate is there any great towns you can recommend you get to by bus and only in Hertfordshire?
Love this video! Lived in Bishops Stortford for 2 years as a child and miss it! 🇦🇺
Thanks very much Edwina! Chuffed it brought back those memories 😃
Truly enjoyed your video... You should be on TV with your natural flair and talent! 🤗👍🌟
Thanks very much Jules!
Great video. Live in Stansted so been to Stortford countless times but still learnt new things!!!
Glad you enjoyed it Jo!
👏👏👏😄 you made me laugh at the end with that explanation about having "the perfect Victoria sponge blended with the perfect loose leaf cup of tea..." Cheers, my dear! 🍰☕✨👌
Brilliant video - this is my hometown and you’ve done it proud x
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it 🤟🏼
Lived in Stortford all my life, great place with a lot of history behind it. Don’t forget to check out the old RAF base at Matham’s wood
I went to St. Mary’s Catholic School on the hill there, lovely little town, very polite people and great links into London
We are visiting soon, thanks for this video😊
Welcome 😊
Glad to call this town my home 🏡
The tunnels were bricked up some time in the mid 20th century after (allegedly) someone died in a collapse, they definitely exist and cover most of the North street/Bridge street area though
This is a really good video - thank you!!
Thanks very much Charlie!
Lived in Stortford (not “bishops” as the newcomers now call it) for over 35 years from birth, from 1977. My great, great grandfather used to be a hawker in the 1800’s selling fruit and veg, and lived in oak street with my great, great grandmother Elizah (Elizabeth) Carter.
Lovely to see the town progressing but let’s not ever loose that spirit of Stortford, it used to be so gutsy.
Brilliant family history there Damon, Hawker! What a character 🤟🏼
Yep definitely loose leaf tea. Especially Earl Grey yummy or mint tea
Loved this video..im Stortford through and through...(Original locals all call it stortford).
Funfact: The statue you you stood in front of 3:45 was actually moved from hockerill lights into castle gardens in 1860. As for the tunnels my friend...their is an underground maze of tunnels in stortford. Alot of these tunnels are accessible from cellar basements from shops in North street. Hope this helps ❤️
Cheers Andy, nice insight into historical detail as well! I’ll be back in Stortford to film about the tunnels…and get inside one if I can 👊🏼
@@ADayintheUK Goodluck buddy...its nice to see home...as i live in Milton Keynes now...havent been back for years....visiting christmas though. Good luck with the tunnels...they are there mate...you just gota find a away....i think they are quite flooded too 🤔
@@andyhudson9132 I’ll take a snorkel! Milton Keynes is on the list Andy. Look out for me…I’ll be annoying locals as usual haha 🤟🏼
@@ADayintheUK Good lad ...might see you in MK 👍
I used to live in Bishop's Stortford with my family in 2011
PG Tips There are tunnels from police station to the George Hotel 🏨 everyone looks for the grey lady !!!! If you were here your Stortfordian 😂👏🙏🏻🇬🇧
Cheers Pauline! The Grey lady needs a visit I feel ;)
March & April 1925. The town on fire.
Great video! 👍🏼
Cheers Neil, Glad you enjoyed it
The tunnels used to be a kids/teenage hideout/chill area but got vandalised a lot so they got closed off
I used to work in Barclays Bank and there are tunnels! Blocked up, but yes they did exist
Cheers Dylan, what a shame.. I'l bet there are some secret tunnels still open!
The tunnels run to the mound through the town to The George Hotel and then up to St Mary's Catholic School. They've all been blocked up now though.
Damn! Cheers Greg, tempted to grab a spade and get stuck in haha
The Castle minds me of Robin Hood. Prince of Thieves 1991.
The film is set in the year of 1194 AD.
During the Regin of His Majesty King Richard the 1st. The Lionheart.
Robert Peel (1788-1850) was the Founder of the first new Metropolitan Police Force at Scotland Yard in 1829.
He was a Home Secretary & Prime Minister.
Sir Robert Peel.
Locals call it Stortford, but I notice non natives call it Bishop's. I lived there for 25 years and it was always Stortford.
Thanks for the comment. I spoke to lots of locals. Most called it Bishop’s Stortford when I asked them. I believe opinions are mixed on the name though. Thanks for the watch 🤟🏼
I would call it Bishop's Stortford also, but for short it was always Stortford as the full name is a bit of a mouthfull. It was the Bishop of London that owned 'Stortford' in the 11thC iirc. My understanding is that the name Stortford literally means a crossing point (ford) over the river Stort. That's why there is the ' in Bishop's as the town Stortford belonged to the Bishop of London.
My partner is Spanish and when she lived in B/S she and her foreign friends would always shorten it to Bishop's. I never heard this from English residents and hearing it called Bishop's sounded strange.
Really interesting video by the way. Definitely learnt a few facts that I didn't know. I can imagine people watching this in 50, 100 years time getting a real feel for the town and its inhabitants. In all the years I lived there I never climbed to the top of the castle! Though the grounds were well known by underage drinkers! 😆
There was supposedly a tunnel from the Catholic Church to St. Mary's the Catholic school. My brother want there but nothing was ever proved.
I was born and bred in B/S . Left when I was 39. I didn't see you talk to anyone who was born and bred there also and of a more mature age!
The Gilbey connection links to Harlow , where Gilbey had a distillery.
Indeed, there’s another nod to Gilbey in my Harlow vlog 🤟🏼
Great content bro…! Keep it up!
Cheers Samuel, appreciate it!
Bishop's Stortford's Union Workhouse was opened on the 10th June 1837.
That was the year when young woman Victoria first came to the Throne and was Crowned Queen.

I live In Stortford and have my whole life
I live in the uk too!!!
Watch out! George Buxton has gotten loose!
I know a lot of people scared to use the toilets in Prezzo because they are downstairs and supposedly where the tunnel was…
Coopers store has a long history. Under the ground floor at the corner with The Star pub was the town jail - its still there but not accessible.
Cheers David, I think I'll be coming back for the tunnel and pub stories!
@@ADayintheUK great, there is still big controversy in the town regarding Cecil Rhodes as the theatre you visited used to be called Rhodes Theatre (and Museum). The lefty woke brigade have tried to airbrush this bloke out of the towns history as he was a "nasty man" but its history you can't make that go away……..
@@davidstevensasidewayslook8831 yeah I heard David. Shame. These people want to eradicate history which is very dangerous. I feel they should’ve kept the name as it was 👌🏼
Coopers back in the day was actually called maslens.
@@damoncarter666 yes indeed and before that Handscombs Ltd and before that Flinn & Sons
His Majesty King George the 2nd had been on the Throne for 31 years.
I run the Stortford ghost tour and tell a few stories of the tunnels.
I'll bet people love that Willow, Can you still gain access?
@@ADayintheUK Unfortunately not, no. The tunnels were far too dangerous now and they were closed for safety reasons. Years ago they used to take school kids down there and things but it's all health and safety now. So much has been built on top of them and everything is built up and heavy. But we know where quite a few of them are.
PG Tips Born here !!!
thanks for the videos 👊can you do edmonton?
Yes I can! Not sure when but I'll get around to it!
I've lived here for 10 yrs didn't know we had a museum where is it
Hi Dougie, its at the old Rhodes Centre...Now called South Mills Arts
@@ADayintheUK thank you mate

We’re you doing a video in north Weald market yesterday?
I was! I did a quick one there late on. We’re you there?
When you were saying very professional or something under those lines near the toilet I was the young boy with the white dog who keeled looking at you. I thought I recognised you
@@Harrywestall Ah yeah! The market video will be out this week. Did you enjoy Harlow?
Was great loved it I live down by that amazing place
Is north Weald going up soon?

I think the tunnels are a myth, there are similar stories in Harlow. I'm yet to meet someone that's actually been in them!
haha always the same! Be great if they do exist tho!
yes the "myth" of the "tunnels" persists everywhere. I know people who have seen at various locations evidence as such so "something" exists. My personal option is these are just various cellars that were extended for storage and subsequently just bricked up.
They million percent exist the s tortford version anyeya
