Something different for you all here...
Meet John Miller, a 94 year old Shoe Maker who trained Jimmy Choo, held the Royal Warrant to make shoes for the Royal Family and other female celebrities including princess Diana.
I met john whilst speaking at the warm and toasty club and I was blown away by his energy and life story. This prompted a spontaneous interview which I'm sure you'll be as warmed and fascinated with as I was.
Enjoy!

"Who came up with pie, liquor and mash?" The origins of pie, mash, and liquor as a combined dish specifically known as a Cockney classic can be traced back to the working-class communities of London, particularly in the East End during the 19th century. Here's a breakdown based on historical records and cultural context: Pie Shops: The concept of pie-selling in London dates back much further, with pie men and women selling various types of pies on the streets of London from at least the 18th century. However, the specific combination of pie, mash, and liquor as a staple meal for London's working class seems to have evolved in the Victorian era. Eel and Pie Shops: The first recorded pie and mash shop was opened by Henry Blanchard in 1844 at 101 Union Street in Southwark, which was initially described as an "Eel Pie House". Eels were one of the few fish that could survive in the heavily polluted River Thames at that time, making them a plentiful and affordable food source for the working class. Liquor: The term "liquor" in this context refers to a parsley sauce, not an alcoholic drink. This sauce was traditionally made from the water used to cook eels, flavored with parsley to give it a green hue. Over time, as eel became less common, the liquor was adapted using fish or vegetable stock, but the parsley remained a key ingredient. Mash: Mashed potatoes were a practical and filling side dish, complementing the pie. Key Families: While it's difficult to pinpoint exact inventors, certain families like the Manzes, Cookes, and Kellys have been historically significant in popularizing and maintaining the tradition of pie, mash, and liquor shops. Notably: Joe Cooke is often mentioned as one of the first to pair pie with mash and liquor in his shop in 1862, making it an archetypal plate of the era. Cultural Development: Pie, mash, and liquor became a cultural touchstone for London's East End, symbolizing a hearty, affordable meal for dock workers, factory hands, and other laborers. This dish was not the creation of a single person but evolved from the culinary and social needs of the time. Thus, while we can't attribute the exact invention to one individual, the dish's evolution into a well-known London meal involved many pie makers and eel sellers adapting to the demands and resources of their environment, with key families playing significant roles in its popularization.

I live in Stortford and sadly it's no longer the lovely market town it was. The planning is controlled by Hertford and they have no interest in maintaining its unique character. Soon it will be one town from Stortford to Harlow. Swallowing up the lovely Sawbridgeworth.

Bare-knuckle boxing has a bad rep, but these lads can't afford to punch hard enough to hand out concussions right and left, they'd break their fists. The wounds are outside the skull, not inside. CTE, that's the real harm in boxing. Being an alcoholic before 12 is a separate issue.

Been enjoying your videos, but can I make a cheeky suggestion? The whisking from side-to-side movement of the camera willy-nilly as you're walking along is quite disorientating. Check out John Rogers or Joolz Guides. They opt for walking-and-talking shots to be face-on, just like you, but when they want to show you something they go for a static shot from a comfortable distance or a long shot down the street. The wobbly, random whisking from side to side filming is very off-putting. Apologies for being a bit critical, but otherwise your films are very enjoyable.

A bit surprised you didn't quite get as far as Silver Street, which is part of the original Saxon burgh, and the oldest part of the town with some beautiful Georgian houses and the Blue Boar Hotel that incorporates a fifteenth century timber-framed wing. Maybe next time.

I hope this helps some folk: I am a thousand years old. Long retired. I have had a family, grand kids, friends and pets and several homes and cars over the years. The only things that matter are the people in your life, and your pets if you have any. A house, a car, expensive clothes are totally unnecessary in your life, but once you have them, you end up working all the time to maintain that lifestyle. I have done that and I am now without any of the big material things because I realised - they mean nothing. Your family and friends, your pets and your thoughts and plans are all you need to love a truly happy life. The idea of wealth and riches is not for us all, and unless that really drives you, find a better way. There is always a better way for you. Always.
