a littel bit late to comment, bur rhanks for the video. Loved the clouds sequence :-) I was really sad to see the poor dog.... Hope you are able to contact authorities or a dog rescue place. Have a great weekend!
For the flies. Boiled codfish water. Now its winter, its more difficult, but in sunny days, the trap its the steam of the plastic bottle, the fish its a decoy.
I made a fly trap similar to the one you made and I used a raw egg mixed with a bit of water. The egg rottens after a short while and flies are attracted to its smell. They go to the water and stay there. Eventually they sink and I caught hundreds of flies in 2 or 3 days. There were layers of flies. But I made much smaller holes than you. Actually, I just used a knife to start a hole and then a simple Philips screwdriver to make 4 small circular holes near the top, not more than 4 or 5mm diameter each. That's enough for them to get in but they don't find the way out. I had a feeling your holes were too big, fairly easy for the flies to find the way out, but I could be wrong.
We will try our best. It's a difficult situation as a lot of the older generation here do not see dogs as pets but rather see them as farm tools and there is a lot of cruelty by what otherwise are lovely people.
You should call GNR and Tell them the situation of the dog This in acordance with portuguese law is a crime . The owners of the land should be íntimo court
If the Dog is a close Neighbors, leaving a dog house and a Note maybe a kinder approach. Many Farmers view things very differently about Farm Guard Dogs vs a personal dog. Honey can works better than the Vinegar of the Law when winning a Friend.
Its going to be tough I know that a lot of shops and cafes have those plastic tassels at the door ways then a zapper inside along a wall near entrance, best of luck I love your channel keep up the great work, if you get a chance take a trip to the Azores check out the hot springs in Sao Miguel :) all the best.

We went back later but the dog was gone. I'm not sure why it was in that field but we haven't seen it tied up since. We did see it about a week later herding some sheep down our road and it looked much happier with its flock and healthier too.
I never saw a bug like the one at 18:14 around here. Interesting. Maybe that's specific to your area. And great eye from your part for catching it. The artist in you... :-)
We started to get them about a month ago and now we have thousands so they are very easy to spot. The chickens will not eat them so i think they could be poisonous
They're called "firebugs" (pyrrhocoris apterus). I think they're quite common in parts of Europe. (P.s. I agree with you, Ken is definitely an artist! Beautiful videos)
An excellent video and, once again, a demonstration of the excellent people you are. I wish you all the best and that you continue to delight me. :) By the way, you need rain jackets up to your feet. ; )
We havent quite done one full year yet here on the farm but from what I have seen yes we should be able to grow some things throughout the year (obviously not summer, sunny crops in winter though)... seasonal things. It does get very wet in winter and trying to stop the growing veg from getting waterlogged seems like the biggest thing. It does get cold and there can be frost but its not for long like we are using to in the UK. We will see :)
Good video, I think that if you get an air drone your videos would be great, that way you can show us air views around you and your property. Just a suggestion. Nice music you put in the video.
We tasted some amazing oranges when we first moved into the farm (last December). We re3cently tried an unripe persimmon which was awful (I'm sure it will be better if we get a ripe one... and we had an unripe pomegranate ... again I'm sure if we are patient and choose correctly they will be great. They are organic and growing in a beautiful spot :)
Loved this video. Heartbreaking about the dog, I'd struggle to see that too, hopefully with the links you'll be able to get him or her some help, looks like there are tumors on the stomach. I understand your need to help and your uncertainty as to what to do, being new to the area and the dog being on a neighbour's land, that could turn nasty.
Thanks for your understanding Dean. The older rural people have kept dogs this way for centuries and they don't see it as wrong as a dog is just a tool to protect their land or sheep. Attitudes are changing and there are new generations of animal lovers here too ❤️
We will be harvesting our trees for sure. The grape vineyard was harvested for wine and the olives we will harvest soon to see how much oil we get. (We use a lot of oil). The persimmon has ripened strangely with some of them being almost rotten and others not at all ripe! The oranges will be ready some time in winter and will be for personal sue (orange juice etc)
I have a bit of experience with beekeeping in Alentejo. You should stop feeding that hive. The bees are just taking the sugar you give them and putting it in honeycombs that then they have to guard against the moths. Right now they should have enough eucalyptus and wildflowers to keep them busy. That hive with that few bees shouldn't have to guard all that frame area. May be a good idea to invest in a couple 5 frame nucleus, or cut a vertical plywood excluder and let them occupy only half the hive, taking the extra frames out. That said they look fine and healthy and should grow quite nicely in winter. If they ever need feeding, as in they're on their last square inches of honeycomb, use solid feed. Liquid feed at this time up to March may result in several gut maladies. It's very common to see North European make this mistake but I always tell them in beekeeping Summer is our Winter. That's when bee-eater birds keep bees stuck inside the hives for 2 months. Winter is at most 3 weeks of rainy days mostly concentrated in December. [person that sold you those hives should know better and shame on them] Anyways. That's my beekeeper nerd-out lecture for today. Cheers.
In South Africa we have a brand called Red Top Fly Catcher which is the most effective method I have ever seen. Check it out on online. They claim to catch 20 000 flies in 3 days, and I can vouch that has been my experience also. Once the flies go in they can’t get out - simple but effective design. The magic is also in the concoction which attracts them. Worth finding out if Red Top exports to EU. If not, they should.
Thanks for making these videos. Quick question (not sure if you've covered this in other videos) but are you able to get decent internet where you live? What speed and what's the price?
It depends on where you live but you can get up to 1000mb fibre in some areas.... We are too far away so we rely on Internet through a 4g simcard through a company called MEO. we have unlimited data and the package is for 40mb download and 4mb upload. We get around 30mb download and 10mb upload though. The cost was about 35 euros a month and you get satellite TV with 90 channels included (most channels are in English too). We have added on 2 mobile phone contracts to this and pay 78 euros a month for the whole package now. Im impressed that we can get such good cheap Internet out on our farm. Makes a big differece to be able to stream 4k video and also upload my huge video files to RUclips.
I love diospiros...it´s a shame that branch fell off.....but it happens when there are a lot of weight from the fruit in suspension...I´m buying it at 1.99 a kg in Lidl...😋
@OKportugal I had a very big and tall ( and old off course ) plum tree in my back yard--some years the plums are so many that some branches also break with the weight...one day of high winds the plum tree just fall down....the trunk was hollow...🙄
@@OKportugal No my plum tree has the trunk diameter at least the double,,,and around 6 meters tall ....it was a very old tree...in fact it was possible to see the hollow on the trunk for many years before it fall down..
Wow the video quality was really good. Good mix of content. Have you asked the farmer about the flooding ie is it worth putting in extra drainage ditches? I guess it’s only grass now so probably not worth the effort.
Haha was wondering 😂 I'm not sure that's suitable as it would trap more water and flooding is a problem. There is a badly maintained drai age ditch but it gets flooded as our neighbouring lands sections aren't maintained
On a happier note, I just saw the weather forecast and apparently the rain will stop as early as monday or tuesday and temperature will go back up to the low twenties towards the end of next week. So, hopefully the next weekend will be a sunny one. :-)
There is guttering. The rain comes down so hard it skips over it. The rain collects in a 10,000 litre tank next to the house (which I will turn into a pool for cooling off in the hot summer) 😊👍
Regarding that poor dog, the right action would be to call the police. There are laws against animal cruelty and this could be considered as such. One of these laws, 69/2014 (link below) says "Quem, sem motivo legítimo, infligir dor, sofrimento ou quaisquer outros maus tratos físicos a um animal de companhia é punido com pena de prisão até um ano ou com pena de multa até 120 dias.". Rough translation: "those who, without a legitimate reason, inflicts pain, suffering or any other physical harm to a "company animal" is punished with imprisonment until 1 year or a penalty until 120 days". A dog is considered a "company animal" in this regard, as per the same law. dre.pt/pesquisa/-/search/56384878/details/maximized
It really broke our hearts watching that dog , poor thing , no shelter and no food , im glad you guys gave him food , and people already gave the info you guys need how to act .We do have laws against mistreating animals!! "Lagostin" , not good to have around ,as they at night will attack your vegetable garden and eat your vegetables , but they are good to eat (exactly like see food ) . I remember to go with my dad and uncle to the big reservoir ( Barragem de Santa Clara ) with bits of Cod fish inside a net and catch loads of those big ones"Lavagante" and then cook them same way as the Lobster , very nice .
Wow...nice winter days... Rui Oliveira provided you with some excellent information. You may want to keep the information for future use also. Sometime ago, I had encouraged you to find the local law enforcement agency that provides the service of protection to people as well as animals in your region, most likely it will be a branch of the GNR (they are the state police) ...... how’s your Portuguese coming along?.....good possibility some of them GNR members may speak some English.....either way, photos speak a million words...quite obvious the animal is undernourished, no shelter, definitely an older dog that appears (physically) to have had a few puppy litters. Keep in mind that cruel people are everywhere and Portugal is no exception, as well as retaliation. So, having good connections with law enforcement is advisable.....learning the language is a must!, learning the people and their costumes, priceless. Looks like having some good stiff boards to place across the water tank top and cut the grapes out of it maybe a good choice, prevent unwanted debris in your water tank as well as bugs....wasps not a good alternative. Well, farm life at its best, don’t look like mimo and Dogdog had a problem playing in the rain..
Thanks mate. Our language learning has slowed down as the weather is not so good, so we aren't out and about as much and of course there is the stigma of covid, so there are not really any public events to meet locals and practice the language. Don't worry though as we are learning a few words each day and its coming along. It is a very difficult language though. Mimo and DogDog are having their best life ever. :)
@@OKportugal you are right, Portuguese is a very difficult language, it’s basis is the Latin, but if you can brush on French, Italian and even Spanish, Portuguese will be real easy.....I lived in Luxembourg for 4 years and had to attend school, French came on easy but German was very difficult for me as well as my sister.....but don’t despair, you will learn.... you must learn, ability to communicate with the locals is a must. Sorry but I don’t know how else to put it.....pretty much like all the poor Portuguese people that made it to the UK....they had to learn English, no 2 ways about it...the most successful Portuguese that arrived the UK, most likely they had already learned English in the Portuguese schools....or else they will subject themselves to the minimal physical labor......
We use more honey than those two hives will ever make. Gina uses a bottle of honey each week just on her tea! If they are successful then we will get more hives but I dont think we will ever make any money from it. We are doing it to give some bees a good life somewhere and look after them :)
Watching that dog ( obviously a mother who recently had puppies! ) was unbearable. We had to put our beloved 11 years old dog Balthazar to sleep 13 days ago ( we lost a 24 month long battle to cancer) and it is just heart breaking to see that dogs do not receive the love they deserve. On the lighter note... those rolling clouds were spectacular.

Hi Ken and Gina, beautiful video, am just so disappointed and saved how the people in portugal treat the dogs, am disgusted. Is there no vet who can start exterelizing the dogs..Lots of love.xxxx
Thank you Dolores. Fortunately its not everyone who treats them like this here. There are lots of Portuguese people who love animals but sadly in the rural areas some dogs are treated like replaceable farm tools instead of animals.
Video excelente como é habitual. O cão maltratado devia ser denunciado à GNR (Sepna) Acho que os vossos cães são arraçados de patos. Parece que descobriram um animal novo.
As a Portuguese I feel ashamed that there is still people that do that to animals, specially dogs, I usually get broken heart with how the Spanish in Andalusia do the same and it's not just one it's everywhere, it's horrible, and because it's private property I can't get involved, it's so sad, By the way would you know who we could contact for a rental around the area of C.B.?
It is now illegal to tie a dog up in Portugal. This is terrible cruelty, she looks so old and very under nourished. Suggest you call your vet and ask them if they have any suggestions. She looked like she had trouble eating, so her teeth might be in very poor condition.
We went back later to bring it a kennel and the dog was not there anymore... it either ran away after breaking it chains or it was moved. Its very sad to see these dogs in chain in the countryside but unfortunately its a common site here!
It can be tough as sadly dogs are commonly seen as farming tools and not pets. The people responsible are otherwise such kind and lovely people. It's just a mindset that needs to be changed. It will take a whole generation to do this though.

Very nice one Ken, when reviewing one of your first videos ( yes, I bingwatched them all during Covid), what an evolution you've made!
Hey thanks, glad you like it. Back then I had no cameras and was using an old mobile phone and a basic phone editing app! Now I'm spoiled for equipment, time and scenery and I'm loving the creative outlet that filming gives me 😊❤️👍
Lekker
Ken deffinetly time for the olive harvest. Enjoy and have gr8 week.
Cheers dude. Yes it's coming soon 👍😁
Loving every vlog, publish more often please 🤗
Thanks Thelma, I try to make a video at least once a week... sometime twice a week... Im glad you are enjoying them :)
Beautiful video as always 🙂

a littel bit late to comment, bur rhanks for the video. Loved the clouds sequence :-) I was really sad to see the poor dog.... Hope you are able to contact authorities or a dog rescue place. Have a great weekend!
Thank you. You too 😊
For the flies. Boiled codfish water. Now its winter, its more difficult, but in sunny days, the trap its the steam of the plastic bottle, the fish its a decoy.
Storm Barbara: "possibility the occurence of extreme phenomena." Sounds about right! 😂
Haha you better hope mom doesn't read that livvie 😂
Hi from England raining all weekend it's life, keep up with the good work mate all the best = good rest of this weekend.
Hi José, it was raining here for a few days too! Have a great weekend dude 😁👍
We have tried every suggestion so far but I will try this too 😁👍
@@OKportugal A bit later in video I saw that your flies seem attracted to the persimmons. Maybe you could use them in the fly trap. :-)
Great video. Enjoyed watching it! That was so sad about the dog. I hope that gets resolved soon.
Absolutely!
If the Dog is a close Neighbors, leaving a dog house and a Note maybe a kinder approach. Many Farmers view things very differently about Farm Guard Dogs vs a personal dog. Honey can works better than the Vinegar of the Law when winning a Friend.

loving the 4k B-footage
thanks man, its my favourite thing to shoot... broll :)
Use a fly tape probably best thing out there as flies are caught more will get attracted and stuck until full tape
We bought two of them at the beginning of summer to hang in our checken house but they hardly made any difference to the population!
@@Bobsyouruncle8811 thanks Kyle 😊❤️👍
I caught a dove on my sticky fly trap!!! Not good but at least it was still alive.
Looks like where I live. We have had rain almost every day for over 2 weeks but no thunder strorms or storm force winds. It is about 12 C right now at 10.47 am on Sunday under dark clouds but no rain as of now .
Today is raining again and and 16c. I started the log fire up and I think it's the perfect excuse to make a slow cooked stew and Netflix all day in pyjamas 😅❤️👍
@@OKportugal Sounds like a nice way to spend a Sunday.

Beautiful scenery the fall colors and experiencing the rain. Hope you have a great success with the bees. So sad about the poor dog. Shame 😞
Thank you Elize 😊👍
Perfect. Loving it♥️.... ok now let me concentrate watching this amazing video 🙂
Hope you like it 😁👍
I loved it ❤️
Did anything good happen about that dog that was tied to the tree? I hope you saved the wasps drowning in the pond.
if you want to keep the flies out of your house, have branches (with leaves) of laurel there. Or a plate with paprika.
We have tried many different things and herbs that people have suggested and none of them have worked so far. Haven't tried these two yet. Thanks 😁👍
Have you tried citronella?
Hello! I suggest youu to take the car and go to a tour to the Serra da Estrela now because it is beautiful, with its autumn colors. Follow to Valhelhas and then to Manteigas ... visit the forest of s. lourenço with its "faias" wood.It 's amazing and you can eat in Soadro do Zêzere, restaurant in Valhelhas . It's very nice. You will like it and the sun is wonderful . IT'S amazing..👍

Wait until the day they become a roast chicken, that's the other bad day. At least they only have a couple of bad days in their life.

Such a great vlog, loved the choice of music looking at the fruit trees. Hope there is something that can be done to help the dog in the field. When will the olive harvest be?
Thanks Julie. We will try our best to help that doggy. I think the olives are ready bow. Ut we are novices so I will check with our neighbours
Just wondering if the dog is ok , i felt so bad when i watch 😓😢😭 its heart breaking 💔 😢 we have 3 dogs we loved them so much ... so i hope the dog is rescued 🙏🙏🙏
We went back later but the dog was gone. I'm not sure why it was in that field but we haven't seen it tied up since. We did see it about a week later herding some sheep down our road and it looked much happier with its flock and healthier too.
Thank u for ur response 🙏😊 Godbless u and gina ... i got addicted to ur farm to ur dogs chickens and everything its a worth watching u guys ...

@@MsRedjay Thanks, we were wondering what they were called! -and thanks for the compliment, you are too kind :D
An excellent video and, once again, a demonstration of the excellent people you are.
I wish you all the best and that you continue to delight me. :)
By the way, you need rain jackets up to your feet. ; )
Thank you Runa. Yes we need some serious raincoats. It's going to be a wet and wild winter on the farm 😁👍
Why aren't you harvesting the persimmons?
and putting the waste in the compost pile? feed the chickens...
12 points for the cloud timelapse !!! :) loved it ! :) are you still getting hornets ? we're still invaded here in Malta ! ... Hope that dog is ok :(
Thanks. We haven't seen any hornets but we have some yellow jacket wasps which have stung us a couple of times
When you said you were planting a "Winter Garden" Does that mean that you can grow some certain crops all year long there? Like two growing cycles?
We havent quite done one full year yet here on the farm but from what I have seen yes we should be able to grow some things throughout the year (obviously not summer, sunny crops in winter though)... seasonal things. It does get very wet in winter and trying to stop the growing veg from getting waterlogged seems like the biggest thing. It does get cold and there can be frost but its not for long like we are using to in the UK. We will see :)
Good video, I think that if you get an air drone your videos would be great, that way you can show us air views around you and your property. Just a suggestion. Nice music you put in the video.
I have a great drone... Mavic air 2... Check out some of our other vids for footage... It's an amazing tool but not so great when it's rainy 😅😊👍
Aple vinegar or juice that should be ok
Another great video. Thanks. Have you been able to harvest any fruit from your trees? If so what's its quality?
We tasted some amazing oranges when we first moved into the farm (last December). We re3cently tried an unripe persimmon which was awful (I'm sure it will be better if we get a ripe one... and we had an unripe pomegranate ... again I'm sure if we are patient and choose correctly they will be great. They are organic and growing in a beautiful spot :)
Do you have a PO Box so people can send things to you 😊

Loved this video. Heartbreaking about the dog, I'd struggle to see that too, hopefully with the links you'll be able to get him or her some help, looks like there are tumors on the stomach. I understand your need to help and your uncertainty as to what to do, being new to the area and the dog being on a neighbour's land, that could turn nasty.
Thanks for your understanding Dean. The older rural people have kept dogs this way for centuries and they don't see it as wrong as a dog is just a tool to protect their land or sheep. Attitudes are changing and there are new generations of animal lovers here too ❤️
Try to dissolve yeast in a water bottle, the smell attracts the flies.
By the way I really enjoy your videos (-:
That's a new one. We have tried countless other methods but will give this a go. Thanks 😁👍
With all those fruit trees and olive trees, why not pick them and sell them or just give them to the grocery storr down the road??
[person that sold you those hives should know better and shame on them]
Anyways. That's my beekeeper nerd-out lecture for today. Cheers.
Thanks, great info!
I saw them on amazon. I must get some before the flys arrive for summer 😅

Did you get more wood good job you going to need it, all the best.
Not yet, i need to make space, but we have been burning lots of fires so it wont take long ;)
The redder the wood....the harder it is...the longer it burns. Hardwood.
@@OKportugalThanks for the detailed response. I'm impressed you can get those speeds at that price.
I love diospiros...it´s a shame that branch fell off.....but it happens when there are a lot of weight from the fruit in suspension...I´m buying it at 1.99 a kg in Lidl...😋
I think this tree has been neglected for a lot of years which is why it was so weak. I will give it a hard prune and hope it will grow back stronger!
@OKportugal I had a very big and tall ( and old off course ) plum tree in my back yard--some years the plums are so many that some branches also break with the weight...one day of high winds the plum tree just fall down....the trunk was hollow...🙄
@@netby oh no, i hope its not the same with this tree as we need more trees on our farm and I dont want to lose any!
@@OKportugal No my plum tree has the trunk diameter at least the double,,,and around 6 meters tall ....it was a very old tree...in fact it was possible to see the hollow on the trunk for many years before it fall down..
how much it costed you the farm
Wow the video quality was really good. Good mix of content. Have you asked the farmer about the flooding ie is it worth putting in extra drainage ditches? I guess it’s only grass now so probably not worth the effort.
I will ask.. But I think the land is good as it flows already. It seems to work without any external effort 😊
I wondered whether you would dig a salad in the lower field.
Dig a SWALE not a salad! Oops!
Yay, I must take advantage of it and enjoy the nature around the farm. Maybe go on the lake in the kayak or cycle around!
Do you ever eat the olives off of the tree?
Olives are very bitter straight off the tree. You need to soak them in brine and cure them before eating.
Why don t you but guttering on the house roof and collect the water into containers and to stop it from dripping on your head above the doors
There is guttering. The rain comes down so hard it skips over it. The rain collects in a 10,000 litre tank next to the house (which I will turn into a pool for cooling off in the hot summer) 😊👍
@@OKportugal put a second gutter inside slightly tilted so it comes back on itself and this will slow it down to go naturally in to the channel

Put it in the dam and not the pond 😊

Thank you to you and everyone else who has posted these contact numbers. We weren't sure what to do.
Thank you for the info Victor. That's fascinating info about the crayfish! We will try our best to help the dog
Sorry but I don’t know how else to put it.....pretty much like all the poor Portuguese people that made it to the UK....they had to learn English, no 2 ways about it...the most successful Portuguese that arrived the UK, most likely they had already learned English in the Portuguese schools....or else they will subject themselves to the minimal physical labor......
how much money you think you going to make from the honey or is not for sale?
We use more honey than those two hives will ever make. Gina uses a bottle of honey each week just on her tea! If they are successful then we will get more hives but I dont think we will ever make any money from it. We are doing it to give some bees a good life somewhere and look after them :)
Watching that dog ( obviously a mother who recently had puppies! ) was unbearable. We had to put our beloved 11 years old dog Balthazar to sleep 13 days ago ( we lost a 24 month long battle to cancer) and it is just heart breaking to see that dogs do not receive the love they deserve.

Raining means tons on fertilisers you got free from God to vitalize your plants😁😁
Pls look into #mealybugs that might be most probably big setback in your farm. Pls adopt organics approaches. Thank you!
@@OKportugal (Moira Ashton) Yes, very sad and cruel, it's the same here in Spain, 😔
Animal welfare in Portugal is terrible 😢
It can be tough as sadly dogs are commonly seen as farming tools and not pets. The people responsible are otherwise such kind and lovely people. It's just a mindset that needs to be changed. It will take a whole generation to do this though.
