A little trick I want to share with the community, as shared by a former Forge World painter: If you're doing Decals, apply all of your micro cuts and then apply it as normal, but then run a hair dryer on high over it for a handful of seconds. This slightly melts the adhesive and makes it lie completely and totally flat, as well as reducing the chance of it coming off. I hope this information helps everyone the way it's helped me!
i only started using them on my most recent batch of painted guys, to save me the trouble of arrows and such, still need to paint my custom chapter symbol sadly
I can't believe this channel doesn't have more subs. The end result is so good it's intimidating to try, but when someone lays it out really simply it doesn't look so daunting.
Cool video! I love how you just mix your own middle and highlight colors, in stead of using 300 different paints! Shows new painters that you can acchieve really cool results with the right use of basic paint colors 😊!
That Space Marine painting himself (I think) Is the best thing I see today. Also, these techniques looks quite helpfull, I already buy some figures so let's give a try.
CRIMSON FIST?!?!?!?!? EXCUSE ME!!!!!!??!?!?!?!? HERESY, BURN THE HERETIC REEEEEEEEEEE Triggering aside, this was a fantastic video, thank you very much :)
I have to say, I find Micro Sol an absolute godsend when placing decals. It completely eradicates any chance of the trapped micro air bobble giving that silvery surround. That said, your method seems to work fine. Good job.
Brother, what a great tutorial! It's to the point and includes so many different colors, each with their own challenges. I learned so much and really appreciate that. Thank you
1 thing I found that helps, is make very small cuts along the outside with a scalpel. Then wet and carry on as normal. Can be tricky at first, but gets rid of wrinkles and air pockets
Why do you prime the insides? This creates a layer of paint that will interface with the glue making the connection weaker. I use poster tac and tooth picks. Also use decal softener, wrinkled decals are a nono.
Cant remember the brand name but someone made stencils that fit over the regular marine pauldrons with chapter designs or squad markings on them so all you do is place it over the pauldron and paint up the gap with the correct colors.
Same here, need to learn how to freehand my chapter symbol, thought this video would be useful, sadly I can't use it. I can't even use the highlighting tips since I run Storm Wardens and they have metallic shoulderpads.
@@pinoarias8601 afaik you can use the same technique with metallic paint But yeah, it's always irritating when they say to use decals, well, show me where they are, because I can't find Blood Angels decals anywhere (not an obscure chapter, one of the most played and represented ones)! And if I find them, they are overpriced, don't ship to my country (Italy, not exactly the middle of nowhere) or on a sheet with every major chapter, which I don't really care atm - apart from my BA units, I have one White Scar model, an older model of Korsarro Khan that has the Chapter symbol already embedded in the shoulder pad, and that's it. It's annoying, really, I know hand-painting is a drag but I wish more people would show it as an option. The only hand-painted tutorial I can systematically find is for Lamenters...
@@KyrieFortune there are some tutorials on how to print transfer decals by using special paper, or ebay may be able to provide some, but it's all definitely not cost efficient
I cannot recommend enough that anyone using decals gets himself/herself those two products : MICROSOL and MICROSET . They'll make your life so much easier if you want to apply decals , even on the most curved surfaces , without a hassle , a bubble or a single wrinkle ! They're easily available at every hobby store / modelling store , they're awesome setting solutions for decals . Water is just not enough for a smooth result :/ And cutting into them leaves visible marks . Start by dabbing a little Microset on the shoulder pads or whatever with a q-tip , and add the decals as usual once it's softened with water . The Microset will help soften it further and it will conform to the shoulder pad without making any wrinkle . It might seem to wrinkle a little at first but it will flatten out :) Then with another q-tip , carefully brush a little Microsol over it , and that will fully help to set the decal , soften out any remaining wrinkle and make it appear more " painted on " rather than super shiny like most decals tend to be . Upvote this comment so everyone can read it and make the task of applying decals a true piece of cake :D
@@MiniatureMasterClass I'm not here to start a debate about which is better or which is "pro" , Microsol works just fine for Warhammer , and i'm sure the Tamiya equivalent somehow works better , but my goal here is just to help people with their decals . I know a lot of people hate decals and find their application frustrating .
@@MiniatureMasterClass I heard tamiya decals are really thick so thats why mark fit is really powerful! If you used microset it would take 3 days to settle!
Nicely done. I got fed up with decals and hand painting logos so I set a personal goal to 3D model ALL loyalists chapters by the end of the year. I’m about 1/3 done. When they’re all done I’ll print them all on my Mars2Pro and Saturn, paint them all, and mount them in a frame.
you can try using Tamiya adhesive softener for the decals, helps a lot for not flat surfaces and helps avoid wrinkles without varnish and adding varnish look even better
also, a layer of ardcoat will make it easier to apply the decal, finishing with a layer of lahmian medium to matt it down again and hide the obvious "decal edges"
So is the glue bond not being directly on the plastic a non-issue for the shoulder pads? I’ve seen a lot of people recommend not to prime areas that will later be glued.
Realized today my first two kits, I put the wrong shoulder pads on a few of the arms, in each kit. They are/were death company and sanguinary guard kits, and being my first kits I didnt know it mattered regarding the chapter icon and squad markings, and just went with what looked cool. A few just in happenstance are placed correct, but the rest as backwords with the BA wings on their right arms, and the left arms with the decorated squad ones. On one hand I might just leave them and say fuck it, but another part of me is annoyed and im tempted to cut them up to fix, but it might get messy.
I’m having my army commissioned grim dark. Decals were not in my price range. I have 10k points of ultramarines being dual painted Deathwatch. How to I match the bright white decals against the scheme?
Would you still recommend making some relief cuts into the transfer before applying them to the shoulder pad? This is a trick recommended in one of your older videos
you can try if the decal is really giving you a hard time, I didn't do any cuts in any of these decals I just really crushed them down with a lot of force
*sponge bob imagination rainbow* Decals! I’ve been painstakingly painting that annoying bit of exposed trim and it’s exactly why my space marines are taking so long

if you have any reservation about using decals, please please please buy some microsol. That stuff changed my life. Now I slap decals anywhere I can.

No cutting the center top to make the decal fit better?? Surprised
How do you paint shoulder pads with raised iconography, like many of the chapter specific character models?
Wash and Dry brush?
use the side of your brush to apply the color to the raised surface, then use a wash to shade the sides, and dry brush highlight if desired
I paint the whole "face" of it to be the major color, then use the side of my brush to do the raised edges and rims just like Jay does them here.

Tamiya Mark Fit Strong is vastly superior to microset. Professional fine scale modelers use Tamiya.

When I get details like that the only thing different I do is I use a Q-tip because then I can roll the decal on rather than push it on

For a better fit of decal (for a painted-like effect) you can use alchool (the transparent one for liquors is better than the pink one).
That damp paper towel really helps
I normally don't like using shoulder pads at all with an mini but this made it look so easy!
