What makes this version of the song so sad and somber for me is how you can draw a parallel between the original and this version to real life. This is an old song, and if you notice, the crowd is full of people well into their adult years, they've grown old along with it. The original is fun, exciting, and full of energy, just like when you're a young teenager. This version is slowed down, the energy and "youth" of it is gone, but in its place is a tenderness and an almost haunting and melancholic tone to it, which is indicative of getting older. You slow down, you've expended your energy, you're less upbeat and reckless, but you're more aware, sensitive and tender, and what was once the youthful thoughts of invincibility and now replaced with a growing realization that you don't get to live forever, and time is short, growing shorter every day. So needless to say when i look at this song in that way, it adds this extra sad depth to it for me.

Spot on analysis. You can almost see the thoughts of some of the middle-aged women in the crowd reminiscing.

The original is still an amazing track, and I like it for so many reasons. But I absolutely adore this version - over 30 years later the lyrics, as you rightly state Bisscute, have a whole 'nother meaning. You can hear the age in Mortens vocals, and he just sings so this so delicate. Together with bands arrangement this is everything I love about music.
For me nothing like the original, this one loses all the charm of the 80's

The first time I heard this version of their song was watching Deadpool 2 and it broke my heart.
It breaks my heart every time...
I started singing the verse to myself it in the theater while watching DP2. Everyone was confused at first about how I knew the words.
I know Deadpool 2 is a goofy movie but the scene with this song over it is absolutely heartbreaking

The original MV in the 80s was something to behold forever. This one is nice too, but it can't top the feeling i had back then in my youth.

This video that she reacts to has some of the some the most heart warming comments in it. Somebody talking about their parents dancing to this song, but they passed away however they also danced with their 6 year old when it comes on. Another cry worthy one of when guy used to sing this to his wife all the time, but when she was passing away from cancer she said "I will be gone in a day or 2". woof. Plus I bought this album when it was new, and it was probably 3rd album I ever bought with my own money.
I love this version a lot more. I think the song is great period but this slowed down version I think speaks more to what the lyrics are actually trying to convey. It's easy to get caught up in the music and the video, if you watched the video, without diving into the lyrics all that much. Maybe you heard the song many times throughout your life, like me, and because of the tempo and everything going on around it you never really gave much thought to what he is saying. You were just like this is a catchy tune. Once you dive into the lyrics and slow it down though you really start to understand the complexity of what he's talking about. We're not gonna be together forever. Our time is limited so take me for who I am and I'll do the same for you for however much time we happen to be blessed with.

A-ha has many good songs. I would recommend the sequel, 'The sun always shines on TV', 'Train of thought', 'Stay on these roads', 'Crying in the rain' (which is a cover from Everly Brothers), 'The living daylights' (Bond theme song), 'Summer moved on', 'Analogue', 'Foot of the mountain', 'Cast in steel' - there is a lot to dig into.

Please do some 80s Tears for Fears: Pale Shelter, Memories Fade, Watch me Bleed, Change, Start of The Breakdown, Shout, Everybody Wants To Rule The World, Head Over Heels, anything off their first two albums really, or any their live performance from the 80s because they were in their prime. 80s The Cure, anything off Disintegration. Depeche Mode- Blasphemous Rumours is a good one. Toto - Hold The Line. Daryl Hall & John Oates - I Can't Go For That (No Can Do) grooves like crazy. If this doesn't get you dancing you're dead.

Basically, it's the sign of age. The faster version reflects youth. The acoustic version is us getting older and it's more poignant. Can we take a moment to marvel at Pal (Paul) Waaktaar-Savoy and his magnificent songwriting. He is A-Ha's secret weapon.

yeah any time you see a song done on MTV Unplugged it's always a stripped down version of the original song without all the electronics added, I agree it gives the songs a whole new feel and meaning
“A-ha” is having that 💡 moment, an idea. This was a nice mellow version. It definitely highlights the lyrics but the original is so iconic and ingrained in my memory that I can hum the main piano/keyboard melody without hearing the music.
The harpsichord is a perfect acoustic instrument for the organ solo.

Back in Jr. High and High I use to like to use take me on as a warm up song. I was a tenor. Unplugged slows it down and looses some of the parts. The or two is lost in the in a day or two in the fast version.
