I don't claim that I do it as fast or as deep as them, but I can definitely discuss variations in my head with similarly rated opponents like me and Magnus and Ian forgot more about chess than I know. It's just practice.
@@NMKT17 Magnus definitely is better than Nepo & has a dominant record against him, but still, he has to try much more than he does against all but a handful of other opponents. And their rivalry did start with Nepo beating him to the U12 world title

Not only are they doing all this in their heads like they're discussing the weather, but Magnus very correctly pointing out at the end of this sequence "white is better" without a moment of hesitation, just makes me realize how hopeless my chess ambitions are.
Engine evaluation isn't human evaluation, especially in fast time formats. With that kind of microscopic difference, the engine is essentially saying that anything can happen
As someone who only knows the basics of chess, it's so cool how they are able to discuss those what-if scenarios while reading even further ahead, and without a board too!
I can look away from the board and calculate out 3 or 4 moves ahead and I still lose 98% of games to someone with a National Master or FIDE Master title.
Saw a video once, I forget how many games it was (I think 6 or so?) that Magnus played simultaneously... blind. He could not see any of the boards but was able to keep them all in his mind at once. Incredible.
@@TommyBo42 Six is nothing. Magnus has done twenty at least. Najdorf did 45. I remember one reporter asked Magnus how he memorized all the positions and he said, "That would be impossible. When I step up to each board I replay all the moves [in my head]."

Nepo thinks he is right and magnus already said it’s still okey for white. Nepo kept going and resulted in magnus to escape the conversation with saying “yea practically”. Computer say it’s clear advantage for white and Magnus knew that. He is above level of Nepo.
Thank you for the editor because I was super lost and I am very green to Chess and the notation has me feeling like I am wearing earplugs and all I hear is the teacher from Charlie Brown lol 😂 wah, wah, wahh. I'll learn but for now I was lost lol thanks for showing the board and eval bar as well!
Nepo: 'In the first game, I could have used Stockfish?' Magnus: 'It wouldn't have worked.' Nepo: 'But it's far stronger than a human could ever be! It's rating would be far in excess of..." Magnus: 'No. I would have won.' Nepo: 'So, you are telling me that if it had moved the knight to...' Magnus: 'Oh yeah, saw it coming. Easy. Mate in 27. I would crush it's dreams in one of 37 different ways.' Nepo: *pulls out of the game citing digestive distress as an excuse* 😂 Please forgive me, I'm just being silly - I mean no disrespect to either player, they are both amazing.
I assume Nepo lost the game he is discussing, and has thought of something he could have done different. Then Magnus gives his alternative, of what he would have done, to simplify the board (as black). Nepo doesn't like it, still likes his idea, but Magnus is not convinced. I don't know what black's next move is, in Nepo's variation, but looks like white moves Queen to g1, protected by the knight there? Queen exchange? Seems like black's queen is kinda trapped there, even though it seems threatening.
TIL the comment section doesn't play games in their head. Not that I could analyse the and lines as anywhere near as fast as these 2 lol, just surprised more people don't play in their head at work or something haha
It's always funny to listen to Nepo explaning WHAT he should have done after loosing yet another game to Magnus. What about saying, "Congratulations, great play!" Don't get me wrong, both are great players, but still.
