I never even thought about training with a hunt close command. Great tip Mark! This will be part of upcoming sessions for sure.

I wouldn't want to use it to try and turn a 200 yard dog into a 50 yard dog, but when you walk up a woodcock and see it light 50 yards away: GAME ON! Basically, I only use it whenever I think there's a high probability that compliance will result in a (bird) find!

Any tips on how to teach your dog to range farther or is that a genetic issue?

Here are a few things you can try: (1) STOP handling your dog. Unless you're ready to quit or you're needing to change their direction to avoid a situation (road, another hunter, etc.) or unless you see where some birds are, just let your dog hunt. (2) Run your dog with a bigger running dog. (3) Run your dog in more open fields and preferably with shorter cover so that your dog can see you easier. (4) Run your dog off 4-wheeler, horse, or if the cover allows, mountain bike (the new electric ones look interesting), and then when you go back to hunting them on foot they might keep up that faster pace and get out further in front of you. (5) If you're using planted birds, start at the edge of some cover like the edge of a field, and progressively start planting the bird further and further from where you and the dog will start. This will teach them to run that edge to the end and then look you up. Good luck!
