I've watched many how to videos on replacing various parts on vehicles over the years, there is always some issue with it, too dark, too light, camera in the wrong place , the person talks too low or you can't understand the language, but this is by far the best one I've ever seen, he didn't just do it and let you watch, he explained it in detail and gave didn't options as well, thanks for the awesome video

Hi Jim - just wanted to say thanks for the awesome video. I replaced my wife's 2008 Highlander rear brakes following your video and it went smooth as glass. I used OEM Toyota rotors and pads and am going to attack the front brakes next weekend - already have the parts and am ready to go. Thanks for posting this - I learned a lot and saved quite a bit of money along the way as well. Take care - Chris.

Like everyone else said, great video. I wasn't going to do the brake job on my wife's Highlander until I watched this and saw how easy Toyota made it. Saved me a couple hundred bucks by doing it myself. Took me about 2 1/2 hours to do all four corners. Awesome pointer about putting the bolt into the threaded hole on the rotor to pop it off the hub. Not sure if my previous vehicles I've done brake jobs on have that hole or not but all I know is I've struggled in the past to get rusty rotors to separate from the hub before. I was even lucky enough to have a right sized bolt for that hole in my spare hardware bins.

Awesome video Jim ... best on RUclips for the Highlander brakes! You saved me hundreds of $ vs. taking my 2010 Highlander LIMITED to a repair shop ... thank you! One comment though regarding the alignment of the rubber plug in the rear brake rotor with the cutout on the hub (start at 14:10 on your video) ... the rubber plug in the rotor actually needs to be lined up with one of the large holes in the hub and not with the cutout on edge of the hub. If the brake rotor is aligned with the cutout on the edge of the hub, the rubber plug on the rotor gets pushed out and will not seat because the rubber plug is positioned over the solid part of the hub rather than over one of the holes between the lugs. Thanks again! --V/R Jon

Jim you’re the best. Really enjoyed your video. I’ve done lots of brake jobs but lately I’ve been using RUclips to do a refresher before the job when I do a vehicle I’ve never done before. In this case, I’m getting ready to help a family member with their brakes. Your video was very thorough. I especially enjoyed listening to your accent.

Thanks Jim for taking the time to post this DIY. Almost wished I still lived in JC instead of Florida so I could stop by your shop after hitting the diner. Let me know when you work on a Porsche 997 Turbo because I have not found anyone else that has made a great, comprehensive and complete video as yours. Also enjoyed hearing the Jersey accent and the horn honking, too. Keep it up.

Awesome video. I liked how you didn't get wrapped up with specifics on un necessary things but did give details on on important things. Also this video is pretty all encompassing when it comes to changing brakes. They are all different but mostly all the same...now days. Drums or pads. What to grease, what to clean the grease off.

Legend, found some tips the other tutorials didn't cover, e.g. putting the bracket on with one bolt then put the springs back in before dropping the bracket down.

Greetings Jim. I just replaced the rear brakes on my dad's 08 highlander. Your video was very helpful however, when I reinstalled the rear rotor, I aligned the rotor's parking brake rubber cap hole with the hub's half moon notch as you mentioned at the 14:10 mark of your video but in my case that concealed the parking brake adjustment so I would not be able to adjust it in the future. I ended up reinstalling the rotor to its original location on hub which I had marked. Just an observation on my end. Thank You Jim.

Always check the guide pins are sitting right in the calipers, some models have a flat place ground on the pins that only fit one way on the caliper to keep them from rotating. Otherwise, great video.

    Hi Jim -
Very good brake job video - you did good job explaining a step by step way to install front and rear brakes .
But when you took your screw driver in the brake caliper to spread the brake pads wouldn't the brake fluid push it's way through the brake line's and into the master cylinder and over flow thus making a mess all over . Shouldn't you of taken some brake fluid out of the master before you did the brake job to make room for the brake fluid being pushed into it then topping off the master cylinder with fresh brake fluid .
By the way you did a good trick of the spreader clips I will remember to do that . Keep your videos coming .

    Great and very detailed, helpful.
Taking off the rear rotor it seems rusted frozen to one of the parking brake drums. Any further tricks to get it off? The bolt trick broke the rust against the hub! I was perhaps too vigorous trying to rock the rotor out/off and a small spring and a shiny silver clip fell out..... Maybe I should drive the car 20 feet with parking brake applied before reattempting to get the rotor off??? -- then I have to figure where the spring and shiny clip came from (?adjustment mechanism?) thanks very much
