I would suggest that you forgo doing this until 2020, when the laptop is a bit more on the older side of the spectrum. Mine was manufactured in April of last year, which means that it's not worth taking the risk to apply new paste when the current paste was applied relatively recently. You make one mistake and your laptop could malfunction, so it's worth the wait.
I made this video because MANY owners were having poor paste applications done from the factory. Also when they sent their laptops into Acer in their respective countries, sometimes they would apply the paste even worse than before (In India for example). This video was made by request.

@@HotelHero I KNOW ! Right? This is crazy ... I really wanted to open it up and give it some proper love but but... I'cant !!! Weird :D No problem, thank you too!
everything looks great, but why do you changed the thermal pads? i mean.. i know you recommend it and i saw that in another video too, but what do they make / help with?
I was thinking about the same thing. Just separating the base could be pain in the butt. Nothing about Heat Sink. And as if it wasn't nervous enough for the first disassembling attempt, one of the screws on heat sink was broken off, which I figured was a manufacturing defect since I never touched those screws before" and I ended up spening most of my time figuring out how to unscrew it than on all the rest
added advice from personal experience, If you dont have a plastic pryer like that. If you have a VERY dull knife, all you need to is to shimmy shimmy one the side and twist the blade, the crackle open sound that it makes from the laptop means it's working!
Thank you so much hotel hero for this. I manned up and took the leap haha ive repasted my helios 300 i5 7300hq using my friends leftover arctic silver mx4. Before without repasting and undervolting using ts CPU reaches 84°c max and 49°c idle but now after repasting and undervolting max cpu temps dont go beyond 70°c. Thanks and i gotta ask is it fine to leave a little bit of leftover original t.paste on the capacitors? I cant get them out but i tried to clean them as best as i can but still because of the crappy paste they put in there is still some tiny residue in the capacitors.
Thank You So Much Hotel Hero! I feel grateful when u upload this video. I was finding this kind tutorial video about how to open helios 300 own case and add the themal video like many month already. Since I bought my helios 300 like last year July using until now, anyway really thankful and appreciate your video tutorial help.
I have an Acer Predator with a 1070. I replaced the stock thermal compound with Grizzly Conductonaut liquid metal. Went under load from 80-95c CPU 75-80GPU to 60-66 CPU and 70-75 GPU. My fans also aren't nearly as loud. Going to use liquid metal from now on.
Svperstarr Ahhh I usually do go for liquid metal, but for this particular laptop with the only thing providing spacing for the thermal paste being the thermal pads I didn't know how well it would stay in place The Helios doesn't have a bad cooling system, but it definitely isn't the best. Perhaps I'll make a silicon barrier one day and get some liquid metal on there. Thanks for checking me out bro. Cheers.
The problem with using liquid metal on copper heatsinks, that are present in almost if not all laptops, is that the liquid metal will get absorbed over time by the copper and you will end up with a dry contact area on the the heatsink, resulting in higher temperature and the need to reapply. Also the heatsink might conduct heat worse over time since it mixes uneven with the LM (won't be a huge difference but there will be one). I used it a couple of times on my old laptop and I had to repaste after only a couple of months. Eventually I just applied Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut and I was done with LM on laptops. LM on nickel coated heatsinks for sure it works but on copper it's a hassle to redo the pasting especially if it's a laptop and you have to take it apart every time.
LaTroy Oner Would have to try pretty hard to break a tab in my opinion. Just slide the pry tool and it pops open very easy. In my screen upgrade video it shows it going a lot smoother lol. In this one I was video taping my first attempt.
Do I have to use a plastic pry for this or does any object that's relatively flat with good leverage do the job well? And I was wondering if you can get all of these products at Wal-mart or something.
yxtee Yeah you definitely need something made for taking apart electronics. The clasps that hold the plastic base on are not directly into the sides of the laptop.. you have to stick the pry tool in then put the angled tab of the tool towards the base of the laptop (inside) to undo the clasps. You can get the tool kit (or something similar), the coffee filters, q tips, microfiber cloth and 90%+ isopropyl rubbing alcohol from Walmart but I do not believe you could get the thermal compound/thermal pads from a Walmart store. Possibly from online but I've never seen them in an actual store.
Since the GPU shouldn't surpass 75 C, you definitely need a repaste. The GPU alone throttles at 85 C so you'll definitely see an improvement. Repasting and using Throttlestop maxed my CPU at around 77 C and my GPU at 75 C.
Muchas gracias por el video, compre los materiales que pusiste en tu video y logre reducir la temperatura de mi acer helios 300 de 98 grados a 73, lo más importante es cambiar las almohadillas térmicas
Very helpful, my Predator no longer overheats! Went from 208 Fahrenheit to 168. However, you don’t really need that much thermal paste, about a pea size over the cpu will do just fine.
The video makes it seem larger than it is. The main reason I did this amount is to cover the corners as is critical in laptops. Pea size and done is more for desktops.
I purchased this laptop 1.5 months back. I used your throttlestop settings and got average temp of 70-75. And rarely 79-80. But now from yesterday, temp is rising up to 90 within 15 minutes of gaming. Temp. Increase is very rapid. There is no performance drop or anything but it's scaring me like anything. Should I go for thermal repasting?
Ashish Nayak-i had the exact same problem..gradually got hotter and hotter, saw this video and thought i would try it. pulled the fans with heat sink off board..followed exactly..fan blades didn't seem dirty..blew exchanger grills out with air.looked through the fan with light seemed good. i saw that there was tiny mm screws that hold the fan covers on..damn good thing that i did i found a strip of concentrated dust between fan exhaust port and copper exchanger, it was was like a semi-transparent strip but dense. used arctic silver ceramic 2 paste and reassembled. What a freaking difference in fan efficiency..playing pubg in ultra settings turbo mode cpu max 71c...gpu max 61c......where before i hovered at 90c cpu...82gpu ***do yourself a favor remove fan covers and check this...worked for me!
can u pz tell me what is the max safe temp for this laptop ? i want to use it for 2.5-3.5 years.... and does repasting voids warrunty? how can they figure out i did that ? thnx in advance
These CPUs are designed to run up to 95 C and function normally. Although at 95 C the CPU will throttle speeds to maintain that as a max temperature, this is the reason we undervolt. So even at 80-90 C your laptop will be fine. As far as lasting 5-6 years temperatures of CPU/GPU will have little effect as they are designed to run at the above temperatures and last up to 15 years. More importantly is how you take care of your system, cleaning dust, keeping it out of extreme hot or cold temperatures (ambient) making sure you care for your system and components. Repasting voids warranty in *some* countries. In my country for example (USA) a manufacturer CANT void warranty for me working on my own system. The only reason they could void my warranty would be if I had caused damage myself when attempting a repair. In India for example, Acers warranty agreement strictly states that all internal work needs to be done by Acer alone to maintain warranty. As far as not getting caught I couldn't say, as I wouldn't attempt a warranty repair if I had broken the warranty agreement.
Hello, could you tell me what were your temperatures before changing the thermal paste mold and after you put a good thermal paste? It was the first time that you changed the thermal paste?
Thanks a lot dude, your video is very helpfull. Repasting is indeed much easier than i tought. FI, I had a Helios with a core I5 reaching 97°C after 5 min of gaming . After repasting and undervolting , it never goes above 77°C => no more FPS drop due to heavy CPU throttling !!!!
Zaki Khan To help temperatures to become lower. By design these CPUs run very hot, so any measure that can be taken to lower temperatures prolongs the lifespan of your laptop greatly.
Quick questions. Is removing the RAM necessary for this? And is it also required to unplug the heatsink? Other videos I've seen seem to remove the ram stick prior to removing the back plate completely. I'm literally teaching myself how to do this because I'm apparently an idiot and decided to not clean my Predator ever since I got it in 2017...
just did mine (2019 version) not much different compared to this model (difference stated below) 1. Fan connector location difference 2. Less screw on the bottom of the plastic cover 3. the battery is different Reduced my max temp by 10C
After removing the battery should I press the power button for like 10-15 seconds to remove residual charge? Or should i directly start after removing battery

Unfortunately, I thought the cooling issue was solved but it is not. I am now looking at thermal grizzly kryonaut as a paste. I have seen good results online and many recommend it. I think I will try it. I don't know what else to do.
I've been waiting for someone to catch that for so long!! 😂😂 Dude I made this video at 3 a.m. after an 8 hour drive home.. I was super fried. And I definitely didn't expect it to get this many views. Sorry dude!
Hotel Hero, could you tell me - which one is the GPU and CPU? I applied new thermal paste and as you stated - Acer did a horrible job. However, now my CPU is reaching 85 C and GPU doesn't hit over 75 C (During Gaming). I think I failed on the CPU application ( I used Grizzly Kryonaut ). What do you think? Thanks.
radamesdejesus18 No if your getting those temps without having TS running then you did perfectly on thermal paste application. The Throttlestop setup just lowers temps further and gives better battery life. I don't go past 75 C on any game I play.
hi thanks for the tutorial. I did the same process because I noticed that the temperature was a bit high. When I opened it, I also saw the dry thermal paste and followed the steps to the letter. Also adjust at the end in the same way .. but now I notice that the temperatures are higher even reaching peaks of 92 .. what do you think could be the problem? not enough pressure on the heatsink device?
Hi just wanna say a huge thank you. This has cooled down my laptop by so much. It used to run at 75 min and 96 degrees max when I'm doing photoshop work, now it runs at 87 max and 55 min. Indeed, the thermal grease applied by Acer was horribly done. Anyway huge thank you once again this saved me from having to buy a new laptop
I've changed the thermal paste of my predator, but now, the fans won't work (0 rpm)... I tried to reopen the computer to replug both fans connectors, but nothing will do... Should I consider changing my fans? Strange that both of them won't work just after I changed the thermal paste... Thanks
Max English In the link theres a drop down box to select another size (at least there used to be) And far as which goes where: You need to just give them a look and see which is which. Overall if they are not damaged then theres no real need to replace them.
do you really need to unscrew the battery? because a lot of other videos just unplug the battery and replug when they are finished. also, do i have to remove the ram? because ive seen a few comments saying that you don't have to, not sure though. thanks in advance!
Which model is your Helios 300? I want to do the same thing to my Helios 300 but afraid if it has a different material for the heat sink. I have the G3-571

Is it compulsory to use 1.5mm thinkness thermal pads or can I use 0.5mm ones?.pls reply ASAP...also is 50mm X 50mm X 1.0mm enough to cover all of them?
I have to change the thermal paste, but i am curious about one thing. In the place where you are using thermal pads in the video, can i use thermal paste on those blocks instead? Like apart from gpu and cpu, use thermal paste instead of thermal pads on the black blocks?

@@HotelHero I KNOW ! Right? This is crazy ... I really wanted to open it up and give it some proper love but but... I'cant !!! Weird :D No problem, thank you too!
Did you apply the thermal paste too ? and if yes then what size ? same 1.5mm on all ?
@@HotelHero Brother one Q, would 1.5mm pad be good. Plz Reply
Guys, don't use 1.5 mm thermal pads or your laptop will suffer from overheating. Use 1.0 mm or 0.5 mm and see which works best.
I wouldn't have the balls to do that!
HawaiiVids Lol! it's not as hard as you might think
I wouldnr have the balls to do it with liquid metal
I can teardown normal laptop but not a gaming laptop
lmao
who needs balls?
everything looks great, but why do you changed the thermal pads? i mean.. i know you recommend it and i saw that in another video too, but what do they make / help with?
They disperse the heat of the surrounding chips. Most manufacturers use cheap pads so upgrading them helps in the long term.
Wow, Acer REALLY don't want you to crack open the laptop if it has to be such a complicated process.
Hi, what exactly does a cleaning solution mean? Does rubbing alcohol work? What should I look for in a cleaning solution? Thank you for the tutorial.
R-16 Rubbing alcohol does work but be sure to use 90% isopropyl alcohol.
hey friend, just to confirm, the thermal pad thickness that you used was 1,5mm right? Thanks man!!!
is it 1.5 or 1?
Is 1'5mm, 1mm or 0'5mm?
1,5mm
added advice from personal experience, If you dont have a plastic pryer like that. If you have a VERY dull knife, all you need to is to shimmy shimmy one the side and twist the blade, the crackle open sound that it makes from the laptop means it's working!
Why not just give us a maintenance hatch acer?! :(
cause they take an eternal for a servicing in some areas
Thanks man, your guide was essential. I did everything as you and it all went smooth and nice (except the seperating part, it was a pain in the ass)
If the paste is electrically conductive you dont want it to contact any part of the laptops internals other than then cpu/gpu die.
Hello, you think the white sound of 0.5 or 1mm please?
Svperstarr Ahhh I usually do go for liquid metal, but for this particular laptop with the only thing providing spacing for the thermal paste being the thermal pads I didn't know how well it would stay in place
The Helios doesn't have a bad cooling system, but it definitely isn't the best.
Perhaps I'll make a silicon barrier one day and get some liquid metal on there.
Thanks for checking me out bro.
Cheers.
liquid metal is conductive and i believe if it spills out the gpu die it will shorten something on the board, be careful
Do you risk breaking the tabs while prying out the bottom and pressing it back? How good is the quality of the plastic?
i hate opening new laptops like these...the tabs are still hard, you could easily break them...great video though
LaTroy Oner Would have to try pretty hard to break a tab in my opinion. Just slide the pry tool and it pops open very easy. In my screen upgrade video it shows it going a lot smoother lol. In this one I was video taping my first attempt.
Getting ready to do this for the first time today. Wish me luck! Seems easy enough.
Its like an open heart surgery, i don't want to do it
What was the thickness of the thermal pads? And how much was the thermal conductivity?
Thank you. All done. Laptop not over heating anymore.
hey...which type screwdriver are you using to unscrew the screws in the fans specifically..totally new to this please reply?
Small Phillips head
Acer did a crap job on mine too. I used the artic paste and it brought it down a definitive 20 Celsius
Are there any video where you compare the heat before and after you do this?
Yanuar Ramadhan Just screen shots of my Predator Sense after Firestrike before and after.
How much cooler (in Celsius please) it is compared with before you repaste it?
Yanuar Ramadhan Read the description.
Ah, my bad, didn't see it....
Well, thanks for this useful information....
By the way, how thick the thermal pad did you use?
0.5, 0.2, 0.1mm?
And what thermal paste brand did you use?
awsome video did the temperature of CPU and GPU decreased? because both of them for me they get 90 celsius degrees when I play the game at 60fps.
Since the GPU shouldn't surpass 75 C, you definitely need a repaste.
The GPU alone throttles at 85 C so you'll definitely see an improvement.
Repasting and using Throttlestop maxed my CPU at around 77 C and my GPU at 75 C.
What is the thickness of the Thermal Padding you used in the video for this laptop?
It takes a combination of 1.0mm and 1.5mm thermal pads.
@@HotelHero You need to make a video explaining where goes which thickness. Not just saying is a mix.
@@Raylightsen well can you measure the size yourself with a ruler, cant ya?
@@HotelHero Dipshit. Document which fucking pads are 1.0mm and which ones are 1.5mm.
Ashish Nayak For a drastic change like that is search for rouge processes or dust in your fans.
Speaking of cleaning, do I need to remove HDD and ram before open up the laptop just to dust off my its fan ? Thank you for your instructions
What a freaking difference in fan efficiency..playing pubg in ultra settings turbo mode cpu max 71c...gpu max 61c......where before i hovered at 90c cpu...82gpu
***do yourself a favor remove fan covers and check this...worked for me!
can u pz tell me what is the max safe temp for this laptop ? i want to use it for 2.5-3.5 years....
and does repasting voids warrunty? how can they figure out i did that ? thnx in advance
@@HotelHero thanks. U helped me a lot 💓

Props to you and your dad 🔥
I thought the thumbnail was some type of weird missiles from world war 2 or some shit.....
Fogozo Apature It does make you second guess what it is lol! It was auto generated so I decided to leave it be 👍
Hello, could you tell me what were your temperatures before changing the thermal paste mold and after you put a good thermal paste? It was the first time that you changed the thermal paste?
Beppex Channel I dropped about 4-5 C.
Yes this was the first time.
10:57 Yeah do that, if its you first time. Definitely.
Is it normal for the top part of the keyboard deck to warm up?
It does get a bit warm due to having metal keyboard decking and the laptop being relatively thin
you are a literal lifesaver thank you so much the i7 runs wayyy to hot and the msi afterburner helped out my degrees so much!
I love your work dude
Thanks dude
Thanks a lot dude, your video is very helpfull. Repasting is indeed much easier than i tought. FI, I had a Helios with a core I5 reaching 97°C after 5 min of gaming . After repasting and undervolting , it never goes above 77°C => no more FPS drop due to heavy CPU throttling !!!!
So why did the put thermal paste
Zaki Khan To help temperatures to become lower. By design these CPUs run very hot, so any measure that can be taken to lower temperatures prolongs the lifespan of your laptop greatly.
which thermal pad did he use? Cuz they got 0.5/1.0/1.5 mm, does it matter?
have you found the thickness yet ?
Can someone drop the link for the background music
Muahahahahahahaha
Quick questions. Is removing the RAM necessary for this? And is it also required to unplug the heatsink? Other videos I've seen seem to remove the ram stick prior to removing the back plate completely.
I'm literally teaching myself how to do this because I'm apparently an idiot and decided to not clean my Predator ever since I got it in 2017...
just did mine (2019 version) not much different compared to this model (difference stated below)
1. Fan connector location difference
2. Less screw on the bottom of the plastic cover
3. the battery is different
Reduced my max temp by 10C
Pretty much 👍
The 2019 version is already undervolted too, which is great
Is it more appropriate to put in thermal paste on the memory chips pr thermal pad like you did?
Thermal paste will not allow for a definitive gap between heat plate and CPU/GPU. It will eventually settle and increase heat.
Thanks a lot brother for this video.. Appreciate it.
Gadget Guide No problem
brother my ass wtf ? are we in hood or 15th ?
George Mamulaishvili Any one with a Predator is fam to me, and therefore my brother.

After removing the battery should I press the power button for like 10-15 seconds to remove residual charge? Or should i directly start after removing battery
Can you do an Acer predator 300 2019 model video of repasting?
K
Do you need the anti static bracelet thing? I need to replace my thermal paste but only have basic tools to do it
If your very careful, no
sir please make a video on screen replacement on this hileos 300 ..as we all know this hileos 300 comes with average display and we all want to replace its average display so plse make a good tutorial on screen replacement so we can also replace our screen
Tech Hub I am considering it at the moment.
I currently have no issues with my monitor and not sure where all the fuss comes from.
But I do understand some might want/need a more color accurate monitor for designing/editing etc.
Ill see what I can do.
actually before this i was using asus rog and difference is day and night actually max brightness is dim also color looks fake if you observed carefully my 5 year old sony viao produce more realastic color then this hileos 300 bdw thanks for your considering
we are waiting for this asap
Edit-i think you are using 17 inc model thats y u r happy with screen actualyy 17 inc model have very good color acuracy and 300+nits brightness but 15.6inch model that majority of people are using have very average display n dull colors
Tech Hub I have owned both 15" and 17" models.
Tech Hub
Replacing it was quite easy
Yanuar Ramadhan how can u make tutorial
Just wanted to know why you need to replace the thermal paste?
Thermal paste dries up over a period of time..
you need a pry tool to open it?!?! Why do they design lap tops like this? It's shouldn't be so much work to open.
I open it with a scale/ruler. Or even a cd. Just put it and and roll over the crack and boom
Did he only use 1.5 thermal pads or various thickness of thermal pads here?
For this video I used 1.5mm only and snugged the heat plate down to conform.
I'll do this!
Unfortunately, I thought the cooling issue was solved but it is not. I am now looking at thermal grizzly kryonaut as a paste. I have seen good results online and many recommend it. I think I will try it. I don't know what else to do.
There are 17 screws!!!!!!
I've been waiting for someone to catch that for so long!! 😂😂
Dude I made this video at 3 a.m. after an 8 hour drive home..
Thanks.
radamesdejesus18 What we're your temps before bro?
Hotel Hero Both hitting 85 C and sometimes CPU got to 90. I was worried so I went in and saw the old paste from Acer was everywhere.
radamesdejesus18 Are you using throttlestop?
Hotel Hero Unfortunately, I am not. Should I? Do you think there's nothing wrong with my application of thermal paste?
radamesdejesus18 No if your getting those temps without having TS running then you did perfectly on thermal paste application.
The Throttlestop setup just lowers temps further and gives better battery life.
I don't go past 75 C on any game I play.
What the hell, you should never remove the heatsink after applying the thermal paste, as that can trap air bubbles in your thermal paste application.
Som Yadav Read the description bro
thank you for the video , how many mm are the artic thermal pads ? 1.0 mm ?
Lucas Limon I used 1.5 mm and I believe that's the size of the ones I removed.
Which toolkit did you use for this video? Could you recommend any on Amazon please? Also, is this the 15 inch or 17 inch Predator 300?
Kyle Rhodes Hey bro! I linked all the stuff in the description!
Cheers!
Kyle Rhodes This is the 17" but I own the 15" as well, it's the same for both models
What did you use to take off the old thermal paste?
hi thanks for the tutorial.
I'm going to be doing this, one doubt, how many thermal pads did you need?
Hi just wanna say a huge thank you. This has cooled down my laptop by so much. It used to run at 75 min and 96 degrees max when I'm doing photoshop work, now it runs at 87 max and 55 min. Indeed, the thermal grease applied by Acer was horribly done. Anyway huge thank you once again this saved me from having to buy a new laptop
Glad to help
Quick question about the thermal pads, how thick is recommended? 1mm or 1.5mm?
bro do u get to know the size yet ?
thermalpad thickness???
I've changed the thermal paste of my predator, but now, the fans won't work (0 rpm)... I tried to reopen the computer to replug both fans connectors, but nothing will do... Should I consider changing my fans? Strange that both of them won't work just after I changed the thermal paste... Thanks
Very strange. Are they not working or is PSense just not showing RPMs?
@@HotelHero Not working at all (I can't use the computer anymore as it will overheat). I can't figure if it's an hardware of software issue...
And nothing is blocking the fans ( I can make them turn by blowing air at the back of the computer)
well i did the same i changed the thermal padding but now when i play high graphic games the frame rate suddenly drops what could be the reason?
bro did u found the reason of your problem ?
It's the third time I'm opening my Acer Predator and it's all thanks to you that it goes so smoothly. Thank you very much. You are the best
When do you use 1.5mm pads and 1.0mm pads? The video does not specify and your description only gives a link to one 1.5mm thermal pad.
Max English In the link theres a drop down box to select another size (at least there used to be)
And far as which goes where: You need to just give them a look and see which is which.
What do you mean different material?
Hotel Hero For the heat sink, I’m not certain if the heat sink has the same material as yours. That’s why I want to make sure whether I have the same model that you have.
Is it necessary to use thermal pads for the smaller black chips? Like can't the paste be used there too?
Is it compulsory to use 1.5mm thinkness thermal pads or can I use 0.5mm ones?.pls reply ASAP...also is 50mm X 50mm X 1.0mm enough to cover all of them?
I have to change the thermal paste, but i am curious about one thing. In the place where you are using thermal pads in the video, can i use thermal paste on those blocks instead? Like apart from gpu and cpu, use thermal paste instead of thermal pads on the black blocks?
why didn't spread thermal paste ? and at end would you show if laptop works (on)
I didn't spread because I've done this a million times so I wasn't concerned about it.
It worked fine for about 1.5 years after this video then I sold it (it's still working fine).
