Thanks for the quick tutorial! I'm building my first pc and I'm feeling a little overwhelmed, so videos like this that get straight to the point are a godsend.
I had to do it twice, first attempt was way too little paste, and of course the temps are abysmal 😂 The second attempt, I put a bit more and temp is 11°C cooler. I use the spatula method. Thanks for the guide 👍
I have started applying it to the heatsink. A thin layer and then install the cooler. It works better for me than the 1000 other ways I've tried. Give props to the heatsinks they send with new processors for the idea. I just copied it.
Best idea. Also just to make sure you can also apply a very thin layer on both... A lot less on the CPU just to be sure all the valleys on the heat spreader have the air removed and are filled with thermal paste. You should almost see the metal under the paste to make sure it's not too much of it. Too much paste is always a bad thing.
@@snatchednefkin Probably way too late, but: A coffee filter will also work, it's got enough texture to remove the paste without being rough enough to scratch.
Method #2 the pea is what I have always used = No air entrapment easier install and after a year or so taking the cooler off it has always been evenly spread. But I have seen these Graphene sheets with their results showing great effectiveness I want more info on the Graphene sheets might just be the thing? They don't need changing ever or a long time.
Thermal grease is a very important auxiliary accessories, can bring more high performance for the CPU to play, I recommend MJ M12 thermal grease, its performance and price are very advantageous, better than MX-4!
Hey guy, what I do sometimes I place blue Painters tape around the cpu in a square formation and the place the paste, to avoid the spill over the edges with the paste when done just remove the Painters tape and it should be even, lol.
not all hero's wear capes! going to use this hack next week knowing i cant even color within the lines in coloring books, let alone precise thermal paste spreading! take my upvote lol
I would say: very very VERY advisable you do use isopropyl alcohol. It will clean your components and it will also evaporate naturally without leaving any residues.
I really didn't trust the"pea" method.. but everyone seems to mention it. Of course lots of people say lots of things that aren't correct... Either way i don't trust it; even if it does appear evenly, how are you supposed to ensure that it goes to all the edges? That seems impossible to me.
@@ECPUz I just spread a layer with a thin guitar pick. I'm pretty certain it was done fine but who knows because I can't POST. I'm almost certain it's the BIOS; it's 5th gen Ryzen and the mobo ships with 3rd gen... But the stupid Asus website says they don't have any software available. I haven't changed a CPU in almost 20 years, since I was 14, but I'm sure I did it right.
@@ECPUz do you have any advice ? I know the PSU, GPU etc work; all that I changed is the Mobo, RAM (since I was on ddr3) and CPU. I'm reasonably certain that I installed everything properly and that the issue isn't the hardware of the mobo or CPU ... It could be the one stick of RAM but what I'm betting on is it's the bios firmware .. But I don't want to go down the rabbit hole of customer "service" ... Why the hell does the Asus site say they have no software for this mobo? The documentation is littered with them pushing the virtues of their bios flashback and related stuff... But then they don't have any. And no explanation as to why. I'll save my cynical rant , I'm just annoyed. But I figured it would atleast bring me into the BIOS, or an error screen, even if the BIOS firmware didn't support 5th gen.

Thanks, great video, straight to the point and very informative.

thank you! very helpful vídeo.
Straight to the point and detailed. Thanks for the great tutorial.
Great, very helpful.
I prefer using a cotton swap to remove the paste. That way you avoid scratching the cooler surface
Does microfiber scratch it?

Do you need to drain the loop before removing the cpu cooler?
Should lift it off and see what the coverage looks like when you don't spread it...or just spread it with the heatsink
NIce.... Could you please include more patterns
P.S = btw i was just buying thermal paste for my new PC and saw your video on RUclips. thanks !
Any other patterns have been shown to be less effective.

What if my aio has pre applied thermal paste? Is it wrong to put some more on the cpu?
If it comes with paste pre-applied it's generally fine for everyday use, is my understanding

Do they make a thermal paste that has RGB?
if ur a new bee.. forget about the second method as u WILL mess up the cooler pressure....just use the spatula
Thanks!
Huh? How do you figure?
Thanks lol I was wondering why I have 90c temps while resting

I had a moment of anxiety when you tilted the alcohol bottle onto the paper towel over the open pc case. 😓 😰 🥵
is the rubbing alcohol necessary? i dont know if i have any readily available

It comes down to applying the right amount of paste. I've been using this method for over a decade without issue.

It's not drinking alcohol, go to pharmacy and ask for it, it's usually used to clean wounds
