I m a comedian, 33, my first book was a George Carlin book. But I some how missed the late greats from the 90s even thought my dad gave me all the VHSs right. I found Patrice on Netflix, a week after his special, 3 months before tragedy. His special didn't like, change me, the thoughts I always had just seemed to be more apparent.
God I envy your come up. That scene would make you so good at everything. Id give 20 years of life to have lived a week of that era. Fuckin Jesus what a great vibe. Would have been like gladiator school.

Me too man. He impacted a lot of people. Can only imagine how much those closer to him like his good friends and family. It makes me genuinely elated that folks are still speaking about and paying homage to the late great Patrice O'Neal. One of the absolute funniest human beings in existence and one of those comics who made other comics around him up their game. When you're a comic's comic like a Norm or Patrice, you are etched in comedy greatness forever.
Oh he absolutely did. Burr has told stories about how Patrice would hold court in front of the cellar with the other NYC comics and ducking away for a few minutes so he can make sure he has at least 5 comebacks and insults in the chamber before being seen since Patrice made it a whole thing among all of them to roast each other in brilliantly funny ways. If you ever listen to Patrice clips on O&A whether it's with Burr, Bob Kelly, Vos, Colin Quinn, you name it, he was the best and funniest dude in that studio who made everyone up their game.

Know a guy with that level of charisma, only his move is being genuinely nice and kind. He's never said a compliment he didn't mean. He could find something beautiful in practically anybody and make you feel seen and proud of yourself. He was also a total horndog. If you make people feel good about themselves, legitimately good not just flattered but positive about themselves physically, mentally or emotionally they will want to be around you, it's really very simple. I try to find something beautiful in everybody too, I know the power of a well crafted and delivered compliment.

This is how to remember a great person and friend. People since the beginning of time wanted to live forever. None could've predicted you live on in the hearts and minds of the people you touched. You can tell Bill loved Patrice even when he says he hated him at times. You know it comes from a place of love and respect. Rest easy my dude and know you'll always be loved

the "i like that" tactic is so damn good that i didn't even know it was a thing until someone explained it... it works both with compliments and "insults" (like the example of pointing out a scar) my entire life i worked service, and i learned that the best way to get a pleasant experience with whoever you deal with, is to notice something about them, and ask them about it. usually doesn't matter what it is. the principle is showing "interest" this method got me dates, jobs, friends, you name it. the meaning of life when you are out in society is to make it about everyone else. a tiny bit of compassion goes a long way.. and you learn to be at peace by not talking about yourself or bitching about your problems.. love you all ;)

It just breaks my heart for his family and friends/other comedians around him, Bill himself seems to never have gotten over it and always has this somber tone when he speaks about his friend. Boston Native here. I never left, still live here. I live where Patrice O'Neal used to be. As i walk around, i always think to myself: "So this is where it all went down"...? The absolute Legends that took place later on in life. I can see the changes in the environment, and with media, and man, i feel how much of a dislike i have towards it. I always wonder how what would of been had these comics still been around. Would it have reached such drastic lengths? Man, Boston seriously did go through such a change. Almost as if it lost it's character. But i'm guessing this is happening in California as well. I can still sense what once was. It pains me to no longer be able to experience those moments in person. Solely through media.
The 1st time I visited NY with some friends back in 2013 we went straight to the comedy cellar multiple nights because we were all huge Louis CK fans, even when we couldn’t catch a show we hung out at the Olive Tree bar upstairs. And even though Patrice was gone and Bill probably moved to LA at this point, the comics table was still there, way in the back next to the bar. Norton, Tracy Morgan, Louie, they were all sitting there, probably still ragging on eachother 😁
