  • Skating always feels magical, but this program to "Take on Me" (Acoustic) by a-Ha was pure inspiration. The song is so gentle and moving that I just surrendered to sound and movement here. If it's possible for someone to become music, this is as close as I might get. My arms just knew what to say as I weaved in and out of deep edges and long connecting moves. The story of the song was choreographing me in a way, and some kind of fairy tale magic took over. It was creative and mesmerizing... the most amazing sensation I've experienced on ice... Floating on peace. That same magic comes back with each run through. I just want everyone to feel this way, to create something and marvel in the peace it brings. Hopefully you get a sense of that feeling by watching, that it comes through. I probably will never top this ...It was just surreal. The program is not flawless, and it's not about amazing jumps and spins... It's all soul and feeling every move. If you've had similar creative experiences, please share in the comments.
I'm 50 in this vid, so if you've had dreams of skating but didn't start as a kid, don't worry. Age doesn't have to stop you from doing what you love for as long as you can. If you always keep moving and put all of your feeling in what you are doing, you'll be amazed at yourself. It's not about starting young or being young, it's about putting your whole self into something and knowing how to realistically expand your limits. Aging bodies can still be conditioned, and everyone has a pace and approach that works.
    Training Advice if it Helps:
I did everything the wrong way at first. I started at 28 and didn't do sports or dance as a kid. Lost a lot of flexibility even as a young adult and had no endurance. Starting out I was injuring myself left and right. Too many reps and sessions were too long, tried things my body had no business trying. Ignored need for muscles to rest between sessions and did little to no off ice activity (when I did it was too intense), wasn't doing strength training, and had no awareness of muscle stability or muscle balance. Definitely was not listening to my body. Basically the same mistakes most other adults make... trying and repeating moves without preparing the body to be strong, balanced, and flexible enough to do them. Seems obvious now, but successfully executing these moves requires muscle tissue plus speed and accuracy of response not to mention endurance. You can't get any of that by overloading reps of improperly executed moves at first. If you ease into it and condition and stretch off ice, you can learn while also preparing your body for what you want it to do. Everyone, but especially adults need a slower, smarter approach to starting out and maintaining skills.
Sticking more to that approach, I can now do more at 50 than I could in 20s and 30s. Cross training over the last 5 or so years (mainly figure skating and karate with some mix of biking, swimming, running) has helped. I feel like I'm in the best shape of my life/more active than ever and doing things like cartwheels, spinning jump kicks, new spins / jumps, and learning off-ice axels. Yes, it is possible! So don't give up. Just don't dive into the deep end too quickly and don't overdo at any point along the way. Know your day to day limits rather than thinking age is a limit.
    Why I Skate:
For me, it's about skating happy, feeling every moment. There's a kind of movement zone that you get into with the music, that goes beyond just jumps and spins. I can't even skate without music. There is no enjoyment to it. Overall skating should be fulfilling, not chasing a win, or milestone goals... You chase the feeling so you can catch it and share it with everyone. Programs create an experience for the audience, but also for yourself. It's about feeling and sharing. The movement becomes music for everyone.
