Most of this is done with soft vine charcoal, brush, and a kneaded eraser on an all purpose drawing paper. A stump and a 2B charcoal pencil make brief appearances.
Oh, man, I really wish I can draw the portrait like you did. It is awesome! I like her eyes that really look into me. Telling a story......
You can! It just takes practice. Thank you for the comment, I'm glad that you like it!
S that’s true
this reallyy helped me . i learned alot by just observing you . thank you so much for posting your work process .
Thanks so much, you're very welcome. I love that people find these videos helpful to their process.
Charcoal is something I’ve only started using these past couple of months but I love it! I find your work so inspiring, you are an amazing artist!❤️
Thanks so much Katelyn. I’m glad you enjoy it!
The discipline to leave the entire right side of the face as a lost edge is awesome, and works exceptionally well.
I think manipulating edges is a relatively easy way to make one's drawings a lot more interesting. Thank you!
This is fantastic , it was great to watch your technique 😊
Thank you Jen!
Great! I like your style and techniques! You make it look so easy.
thank you so much for posting this. i have admired your drawings for quite some time.
Thank you Elizabeth! I'm glad that that you enjoy my work.
Thank you for sharing. Please keep uploading such wonderful tutorials.
Wow 😳 this makes me want to pick up my charcoal and draw portraits
Thank you!
Yah me too, but i wish i can get proportions very well hahaaha. Also im the type of a person who is lazy enough to not get a proper reference
Amazed you did this in so little time, you don't put a foot wrong. Following along I got to brushing stage and thought, yes! Then on re-adding details in I somehow lost my way. Angles and subtle levels are so important.
Developing edges and details is often where it goes wrong, happens to me too. :)
@@JeffHainesArt I've learnt so much off you over the past week or so that it's criminal. Love your style though. Edit: applying it to my own stuff now.
Great watching how you build up the portrait 👌🏻
Like magic!
Please I need your tutorials back. They're the ones who keep me distracted during this quarantine. Thank you. I love your art.
Thank you Carlos! I should have something new done soon!

Wow !! Just beautiful !!
Your beautifully rendered drawing ellicits a strong emotional connection despite being "rough" compared to the current trend of hyper realistic drawings prevalent on RUclips. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Jerry, love hearing that.
Man your drawing of this girl helps me to relax. Wonderful techniques my man.

I love your style of draw, it's soo beautiful ❤
Thank you! :)
Magnifique 😍😍
The eyes look so real and deep here. She looks like someone I'd want to meet, and it's an interesting thought to get from looking at a drawing.
I love that style that's why i keep on practicing but I always failed to make it. But then I still I will make it someday. Thanks for this! 💙
Portraits are quite difficult, keep studying and practicing and each will be better than the last. Good luck Rhoselyn!
Fantastic work
I love this more than realism, when you look at it, there's a connection and meaning
Thank you Mara! I agree with you completely :)

Wow! I already drew with charcoal but I wanted to know how others use it! Well done ✨

Thank you. Beautiful work.
Thank you so much! This video helped me a lot! I'm in art school and due to corona, my teacher can't explain us how to use charcoal for the first time so I watched this video before starting my work and already learned so much in just 4 minutes! My piece came out amazing!

Wow! Great vid. Thx for sharing your skills. Subscribed.
Thank you for watching and subscribing RaeRae!
I found your technique is more painting than drawing. And you are excellent. Greetings from Mexico.
Yes! It is definitely somewhere in between. Thank you Antonio!
I need a lot of work on my proportions and this video is great.
Thank you! Good luck with your drawing.
Could you perhaps show us the image you are drawing from? I love the way you begin with a block formation then smooth the edges into soft curves. I think the use of a brush is the best tip I have learned from this superb tutorial. Many thanks.
Thanks so much!
this is some beautiful work dude. New sub right here.
Thank you!
Let’s go Jeff … woohoo
Truly Nice.. and very helpful for me.. your work is awesome
Happy that you find it useful :)

Nice
Maravilloso
Thank you!
Fellow, for next, it will be nice to tell us about the change of charcoal bars you have in the process with signs on the screen.
That's fantastic thnx for sharing your knowledge. What is the charcoal u are working with
Thanks! I’m using soft vine charcoal primarily, along with a few charcoal pencils here and there.
That is great . I hope one day I can draw like you )
Thanks! You definitely can!
@@JeffHainesArt now I m stalking u on instagram .11 k is not enough. U deserve more followers . 😊
@@gulnurayvazova512 Haha! Welcome! 😊
Hey so you're always telling us that the way to get this good is through practice, well I'm used to painting but totally new to charcoal, how exactly do I practice? approaching a portrait right away like this feels intimidating. Do I need to study from some books or something before I try? Any guidance would be really appreciated 🙏🏼
Hi Lyna, studying form books and anatomy are certainly helpful, particularly with construction. My advice would be to also draw lots and lots of fairly quick portrait sketches (from life, if possible). Fairly quick efforts every day will start to give you a familiarity with the human face as well as the medium of charcoal. Best of luck Lyna.
just waaaaaaaaoooooooooooooooo
Cutie 😊💝💝💝 I watched it with my mouth open from curiousity and admiration 👍🖤🖤🖤
Thank you for watching :)
I haven’t drawn in charcoal since highschool and in really wanting to get back into it. What would you say the main difference between drawing in charcoal and graphite is?
Charcoal is looser, and can be manipulated more on the paper (depending on how soft your charcoal is). Charcoal also has a fuller value range, because it can produce much denser darks. It’s more expressive whereas graphite is more controlled. Good luck!
Beautiful Work! (Watch at 1/4 speed)
Thanks Bobby!
こんなかっこよく絵がかけたらなぁ。
Wow.
Incrível
EXCELLENT WHAT TYPE OF PAPER DO YOU USE AND WHAT MATERIALS PLEASE
Jeff....Wonderful work. I am a beginner and I was wondering what you used to blend your picture from time to time. It appeared to be a long, black wand (a magic one, no doubt!). Thank you!
Thanks so much Charles! What you're seeing is a fairly soft, round acrylic brush, around a #10. It's old and the info has worn away. Not very bristly. Hope that helps!
@@JeffHainesArt Thank you, Jeff. It sure does! Merry Christmas!
Wow amazing sir really good you draw so smoothly 👏👏just wanted to know which charcoal u are using
Thanks! The charcoal I use is a soft vine (or willow) charcoal. I use several different brands.
@@JeffHainesArt thanks a lot keep up
