Wonderful as always. What a tragedy for the unfortunate, beautiful 17 year old girl, who caught the King's eye, made her pregnant with a baby who died, only to die herself after birth complications. Louis really was a bit of an old goat under all his sumptuous finery! I feel so fortunate that you have made these fascinating videos. I love them all.
I'll make a video about the Duchesse de Fontanges sometime ... I'll put her on my to do list. Thank you so much for watching and your super nice compliments Laura, I am so glad you are here !
There are no better examples of double standards that women had to live with than King Louie’s relationships. He did not even keep up a friendship with his sister in law,,,,,,which I might add would have enlightened him greatly……..mabey he was not broad minded enough to be comfortable with brilliant women,,,,,,I imagine it would have been so hard live under his thumb . Madame Montespond must wanted to throttle him ,,,😉 🤭
These essays on the French Monarchy as so beautifully and cleverly described; please keep providing these wonderful insights in to what has been lost to us by the dark shadow of the Revolution and the Terror(s) that came afterwards.
Too much arrogance is fatal. She was not nice to the queen, as the previous mistress was. As they say good looks fade but a good heart keeps you beautiful forever.

I really enjoyed your videos on the three mistresses of Louis IVX. I saw you also have videos on some of the kings and prominent nobles. I am looking forward to listening to Richelieu, Mazarin, Louis IVX, Louis XV and Louis XVI. I am also interested in learning about Francois I, Henry IV, Henry II, the Musketeers, Robespierre, Napoleon, Clovis, Charles VII, and Charlemagne as well as his father and grand-father. Your chanel is quite a find!
Thank you ! I am planning a five part series on Louis XIV starting half May. In June a three part series on Louis XVI will follow. The other notables and kings will be on the menu, but at a later time. I work fulltime so only can produce one video per week ! So glad you’re enjoying this ! Have a great Friday !

I love all the drama of the royals and the court's noblemen and noblewomen during the Renaissance period. Especially the ones in France, the drama there was extra juicy.
Great channel! Will you consider creating the one about the Great French Revolution? So many fascinating, and sometimes sinister personages spanned its pages! Some lived a full life, others, like Louis Antoine Léon de Saint-Just, died young.
In time I will definitely get around to that. But to be honest, for now I have scheduled until January on many differnent topics so i have a lot of work ahead of me !
The Queen Marie Therese had only 11 rooms Montespan herself had 20 rooms at her disposal and even had her own bathroom where she and Louis XIV obviously had.....many happy hours
Thank you for your videos! About Montespan, I once read that she liked to throw money around so much, that whenever she had to go somewhere, she would use an escort of as much as 150 horses. So that whoever saw that entourage, they would always know at sight - "That's Montespan! Only her is this wasteful!" She and Louis XIV and many nobles of the time, were like the tacky noveau riche of nowadays, that suddenly got a ton of money, and now struggle to create new ways to flaunt them. I wonder if the concept of "tacky" existed at the time. It probably did, because I once read about some foreign nobleman visiting the Louvre, and making a comment like "Wherever you go - every corner, every wall, every painting, every statue - everywhere you look, there is the face of Louis XIV looking at you. Does the man not realize how laughable that is?" So the people of the time probably were thinking when they saw Montespan entourage "That poor overcompensating woman. Spending people's money like it's nothing." Both Montespan and Louis XIV remind me of modern internet moderators and community leaders, the narcissic schizofrenic sociopaths that create their own perfect world of absolutism, from which they expel anyone that says 1 wrong word. Without a shred of self awareness of how small and petty they are to outsiders, because in their own twisted minds, they are people of grandeur that matter more than anyone in the world, and get to decide anyone's fate, and nothing else exists outside their micro world. I wonder if people of the time saw Louis XIV and Montespan and other noble people that built themselves palaces of overwhelming luxury, for how pathetic they are.
New to your channel, but I'm super impressed with your accurate account of Demontespan's time with the Sun King! He is my favorite historical figure and she is also in the top ten!. Love your channel! New sub!
I am really honoured for your kind words, especially seeing how you're a connaisseur of the French royals. Next sunday I start with a five part Series on Louis XIV. I hope you'll enjoy that too. Have a great day and many many thanks !
The video on Mme de Pompadour is already up, you can watch it on my channel now. Du Barry is scheduled for a release on July 24.I am sorry I cannot do more videos but I work a fulltime job, it is sometimes hard to combine work and my channel....
It's "Ro-che-chou-art de Mor-te-mart". You have to say it slowly and everything will be fine !! Furthermore, she was very proud of her ancient family and joked with the king that her family was older than the capetian dynasty ...
I don't know if you are French so I will write in English 🙂 Since you seem to be interested in the relations between Louis XIV and Mme de Montespan, there is something quite funny : when they were having an argue (and they often had), Mme de Montespan used to put an end by saying to the king that, at least, in her family, there was no misalliance - referring to the Bank family of the Medicis. Nobody except her would have dared to speak that way to the king. She was really funny and fearless 😂
Hi, awesome live history video I enjoyed it. How is your summer going and how is Rani your cat? I'm doing well my cat Benjamin says hi to you and cute Rani your cat. He's doing well also. We have a heatwave in Ontario Canada. How is the weather where you are? Have a great weekend 😊
The one thing brilliant about Athenais was her sense of humor. The Mortemart sisters were known to be tremendous fun. Athehais sister- Mme de Fontevrault was the cleverest and most beautiful of sisters-she later became a Nun-the Abbess of her convent. She used to take Athenais to a church in Paris to hear the sermon of a certain priest who looked like their brother, the Duc de Vivonne. The sisters would shriek with laughter at the priest who looked like their naughty brother dressed in a soutane delivering a holy sermon. Louis XIV used to say "You know, I like clever, amusing people" (le gens d' esprit)
I believe she also became a Carmelite Nun Later in life. I remember reading when she died the King forbade there children to morn her which I found deeply degusting.
You are right. But there is something very, very odd that you must remember : officially, her children had no mother. Surprising, but true. On the contrary, they were officially sons and daughters of the king. When each was born, the name of the mother never appeared on the register. Only the name of the father : Louis. Of course, it was an open secret. But still : at this time, it was all about appearances. That is why, when Mme de Montespan died, her children could not officially mourn her.
Yeah after all she was amazing but still my favourite royal mistress of the time was Louise de Kerouaille Douchess of Portsmouth one of Charles II`s paramours she was the one ho desclosed that he wanted to become a catholic and so he converted on his dead bed
I’m always struggling with that terminal S in French. I know it’s not usually voiced, but proper nouns seem to be an exception, especially for toponyms, maybe it’s because the older pronunciation of place names, and personal names, too, tend to endure longer?
