Steel Melody is a mill stone. Just cut yourself free. This show's appeal is and always has been about a wonderful family and their adventures, not a boat. We love you guys, but sometimes it seems as though you get overly worried about what other's think. Do not do this. If your show had been about having a family farm, but 2 years in, you realize the land floods and you have to sell and relocate . . . . . . you sell and relocate! We are rooting for you and we are not going anywhere! Be free, be free, be free! I want to see video of the waves splashing on that bow and everyone's hair fluttering in the breeze!!! PS We love you guys!

Instead of seeing the sale of Steel Melody as letting anyone down, which it absolutely isn't, rather see it as affording someone else a great opportunity to acquire an affordable and well-refurbished boat along with the opportunity of a lifetime to make their own dreams come true. If you continued the work, and in so doing increased the sale price of Steel Melody, that dream may creep beyond the means of your potential buyer. Few people work as hard as you two do, and we all just want to see your wonderful family casting off on your own well-deserved adventure. Take care :)

Certainly made the right decision to sell and offload "Steel Melody" not good if it is taking it's toll on Andy and he can now focus on "Ocean Melody" and relax. Has done fantastic work on it and hope a good buyer can be found to continue the great work 👍.

One of the most imporant things in life is to make the right decisions at the right time. And Melissa, you did it!!!!! Health is much much much more important than a video, a boat, or whatever what. So take care and do the things which are rigth to help Andy getting well again. Working in this 'speed" is driving yourself crasy, so this has to stop. But admitting this is hard...I know!! Take your time, we, alle viewers, will respect it when you don't make an episode every week because of your health.....and it not only Andy's health, but Melisssa and the kids are envolved too. Soo, just know we love you whatever decision you make. I hope you understand what I mean.....I am from The Netherlands so writing and express yourselve in English is sometimes difficult.

Melissa, do not apologise, you and your family are doing absolutely amazingly, that's why we all come back for every single episode.
If selling it as it is means you get freedom then do it without hesitation.
I like everyone else will continue to follow, no matter the content, always preferred a 'what happened' channel to a 'how-to' anyway.
Well wishes to Andy, hoping the metaphorical weight will be lifted soon.

Melissa and Andy, I’m proud of the work you are doing. I’ve been watching your progress through Steel Melody’s purchase, then Ocean Melody.
Andy, more than a year ago, maybe 2, I suggested that you not denigrate yourself. You are performing monumental tasks, well.
Regarding the diesel tank, use the nastiest grit of sand paper you can buy, to sand the surface, surrounding the weeping area, absolutely smooth. No ridges, no bumps. Saturate, fully, a clean cloth with acetone. I mean dripping wet. Squeeze acetone into the hole that is weeping, until it weeps only acetone. Wipe the sanded area with the same saturated cloth. Leave it until the acetone has evaporated from the hole. Slather thickened epoxy int the hole and smooth as best you can. Cover it with peel-ply. Let it go off. Pull off the peel-ply. Again wipe with acetone, apply at least 3 layers of biaxial fiberglass over the prepared area. Let the patch harden. Check for other leaks (because there won’t be any where you’ve made your patch.
Also, use something other than foam or plywood for the tank flange such as prepreg carbon fiberglass or carbon board. They won’t compress, won’t absorb diesel, work well with epoxy and are STRONG.
Be well. I’m counting on your sailing episodes over the next several years.

Alternative to wood use a scrap Cutting board ldpe plastic.. if it's suitable it tends to be hard but slightly slippy unless heavy corse sanded. It's though...
Take it easy Andy it's no good fixing up the boats if you're all worn down yourself ...if anyone can help you get stuff done take them up and just tell them what you want doing.

Just wanted to say that putting a power tool on the end of a pole is not stupid. I do a lot of fabrication and there is no stupid ideas as long as it is safe and does not do more harm than good. One of the many reasons I love watching you guys is you think outside the box. Do not let the Know It All's get to you. They need to remember what it was like the first time they did things.

Andy take care of yourself my friend. Don't overwork yourself and get all stressed out. With Steel M Melody you've done as much as needed to sail her on. Your first priority is you and your health. As important your family needs you. And a beautiful family you indeed have. You say you've a deadline of end of April or 1st week of May. The schedule should be when you've got it done. You want it done right not in a rush which just creates stress. And I realize you've you concert coming up and that I assume requires rehearsals which again with everything you are doing with the boats and adding this on is definitely ALOT. The work you have done has been absolutely amazing actually the work both you and Melissa have done so far. You will get on the water, but I think it will be more appreciated by your family and friends and definitely you if you have Melody in the water completed in health and stress free. Bla Bla Bla BLa BLa I know and I could keep banging on and on , but I won't I think well hope you know what I'm saying. Take it easy catch you next video. Melissa if Andy doesn't smartem up give him a big kick in the Rear end.

But like you mentioned: enough is enough!
I felt very sorry for you when you struggled with the diesel tank, that was a serious setback!
Your deadline is approaching too fast, and a lot of work is still waiting. I think that you now need to focus on your heath, and be selective in your projects to make sure that you are able to stay fit for the start of your big adventure with your family, not to forget that you have big plans for the concert that hopefully will take place in optimal conditions.
Remember that once this difficult period is over, you will be and can be proud of what you have achieved. Take care!

I wouldn't overkill a delaminated tank. Hard to say how long it would take to dry. Don't let the boat freeze. Put your effort into a day tank/water separator/filter and if its a problem later, fix it later. If its truly that bad it would almost be easier to get to thru the hull. You'll know if the bottom coat starts peeling in that area. Good choice on letting steel melody go as-is. Your hard work is heroic. Relax & don't lose the plot. It's about adventure with your family. Boatwork will always be a part of it now and later.

Andy you are way too hard on yourself. Necessity is the mother of invention. Any skilled smart person would do the same method. I would have used a coarser grit on the sanding disc. I thought the same thing about the foam flange. I would have 50mm gap between the bolts. Diesel can seep through any flange so more bolts is better. Andy from NZ.

These are enormously difficult and courageous decisions to make, but you're doing the right thing.
Perhaps a short change of scene would be helpful if it's possible.
With regard to the repairs in the tank, it can't be emphasised enough how important thorough preparation is. The best solution might be to get access from outside the hull when circumstances permit.
A roller can be used to laminate in hard to reach spaces, and you can prepare and wet out a patch on some polythene, put another piece on the exposed side while you carry it to the repair site, peel one piece off, position the patch and remove the second piece of polythene, and use a ribbed roller to consolidate it and push any air out.
Good luck, and look after yourselves.

Weighing cost of storage plus the other boat will offset once memory is sold. She may be worth more if you keep on working in her but at what cost on the other end. Having the time to make more videos will get you more money in the long run as well as music potential. Letting this project go is a great decision and I’d say any reasonable person would agree it’s too hard to put one’s effort into two huge projects. Moving on and getting a little more balanced life is more important. Looking forward to some tunes and great adventures for you all!

Andy. You’ve probably already finished the epoxy repair to the tank. But. What about mixing your epoxy and pouring into a cake decorator or mortar squeeze bag? Then you can direct the tip where you want it and push out the thickened epoxy into the gap.

Wow!!! Just wow! I’m in complete and utter awe of your work ethic & project management!
Some advice from someone who’s been there; deadlines are always flexible, your physical & mental health + family always come first. This was 1st offered to me in my early to mid twenties, but of course I knew better at the time… It’s only taken me 30 years to realise they were right. Life’s settled now & one hell of a lot more comfortable!! Mind you though Andy, the support you receive from M & J is second to none!! (And once the little ‘un is just a year or three older he’ll fit right into that black hole of a diesel tank & be carrying out the repairs for you!!!😜)

Nothing is stupid when it comes to successfully repairing a difficult job. It’s ingenuity you are using and be proud of it. I’m wondering if you have not yet completed this leak repair if Total Boat Thixo epoxy would be the right product to seal those holes. I noted that is what was used on the Duracell Project to seal the water tanks when they had 2 small leaks. Best of luck.

You two have fallen into the same trap as so many channels.
You start off on a project, gain a decent number of followers, the drift off onto something quite different from your core project. I really enjoyed watching Andy cutting rust out of the hull and welding in new plate, but that has been replaced by titivating another boat.
You have made the right decision to sell Steel Melody, for whatever you get for it. You need to set sail, not linger in a marina forever.
    Good luck!

    • @SailingMelody
      @SailingMelody  Месяц назад

Thanks* do remember though it's not a trap. It's life. We didn't stsrt off thinking "let's design our lives in such a way as to please a RUclips audience" we simply loved our lives and put it on RUclips and if people enjoyed one part of it and didn't enjoy another part of it then hey ho that's fine. We won't force our lives in a given direction so as to avoid "falling into a youtube trap". We just happen to be documenting our life on RUclips and if people don't like the way our life is going then frankly that's hilarious to think we would give a second thought to that.

I love the grinder on a stick trick. I would use a bit of colored line chalk in the diesels tank. Throw a bit of dry chalk along the walls and look for the wet spot.
Btw, look a selling Steel Sailing Melody as a win, win, win. You saved her, you’re moving closer to fulfilling your dreams and you’re helping someone else enjoy her at an entry price. Don’t look back.

I was recommended a novel way of sealing my water tank inspection lid. Copied from a well proven Amel design.
The lid is put on from the underside (interior) of tank with a captive wide rubber seal. No bolts are used through the seal. It just has a couple of cross bars fixed to the lid centre line that are simply clamped down onto the top of your tank with wing nuts and a lock nut.
Makes sense as any fluid movement or pressure is working to aid sealing by adding pressure to the internal sealing lid.
Added advantage you can access and inspect and clean your tank with minimum time.
Don't forget your bigger lid will mean greater pressure on your edge seals and your bolt holes!
