A cracking start to the year. Thank you for your hard work.
Like all great reviews this sparks questions. On a couple of occasions you mention wanting to use upscaling to achieve 60 fps (e.g. Starfield at 4k) but might a more sensible option be to drop the image quality from Ultra to - say - Medium? I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be interested to see your views on the difference in image and gaming quality. 4k ultra gives the cards the greatest workout, of course, and allows you to use results from previous tests because it's all consistent. But I submit that that's not actually particularly useful to the owner of a 4k monitor who is going to see that they're not going to get 60fps at ultra settings and so asks what settings will give 60 fps. That's a lot of extra work for you so perhaps better left for a separate video.
Thanks Quentin - i hear you, but you are quite right we do Ultra settings across all resolutions for consistency, and philosophically most GPU reviews use max image quality so it's a 'worst case' for the GPU.

Great review thanks. I've been holding onto my 5700 XT for a while, this could possible persuade me to upgrade, but part of me is also thinking to wait for RDNA 4/RTX 5000 series. I will have to have a think...

£600 for only 12GB ram, 192bit and old standard DisplayPort 1.4a port. Does seem a tad pauperize for something over £500. First-rate review nevertheless.

Good thorough review dominic, overall id agree with you, just needs a bit more VRAM but i am assuming the 4070 ti super will rectify that issue, at more cost 😉

Looking at the performance per watt and power draw this really looks like to be a sweet spot in the range. Looking forward to the rest of the super range - 4080 in particular.

@@lucifersheadscarf6988 only high end, 70 class wont come before 2024 Q1 thats guaranteed, its always like that 90 and 80 and 70s for later, so not less than a full year for that no point in waiting if u need to upgrade. and something tells me the prices will be crazier than 4000 were when announced.

Overall id say its good, I havent looked into VRAM usage too much so am not able to give a verdict, but dominics testing is spot on, as always.
sure better value than before, but seriously just 3080ti performance for the price with the same lack of vram and now forced "user error" connector..... dont see it that impresive

RTX 4070 Super or AMD RX7900 GRE??Both are almost the same price in my country and i dont know which one to get.I am leaning towards AMD more cause of VRAM,thinking it would be more futureproof.Any recommendations?

Dominic is 12GB not enough at 1440p or is it really a big deal ? I know its very game specific, id just like you to elaborate on this, I know you mentioned it in the video, not picking holes. im just not sure what to do for my sons system later this year. 4070ti might be outside the price range im looking at.
i think 12GB is ok - it's definitely not ideal, but it's really hard to say when it will become an issue. In my testing today i didn't have any issues at 1440p ultra settings, even with ray tracing enabled, but things move quickly and it could be a different story in 2-3 years.

Just bought the Asus Dual 4070 Super. One of the few 4070/4070super that would actually fit in my case.
Got my 3080 for $450 on Ebay last year around February (using it right now). Just gonna wait until the 5K series. Ain't no sense upgrading. Was going to upgrade but the price gouging killed any desire to buy a new one.
Don't think the 50 series is going to be any better in terms of price gouging. It will likely be even more expensive. Would not be surprised if it is $799 for the regular 5070.
@@theandroidsI actually think Nvidia learned its lessons. I also think the 5K series will wipe the floor clean with the 4K series. Even the 5K "entry" level will be like 4080 if not closer to the 4090. Besides the 4k series is STILL slow in 4K with max setting and the 5K series will be the *FIRST* GPU with 4k/Max setting doing 200fps+ ez.
@@lil----lil The only lesson Nvidia has learned is how to price gouge the living daylights out of gamers. The 50 series will not see any decrease in price. My bet is it being more expensive as I said. Greed my friend greed. Nvidia would have learned a lesson if the everyone said fuk the 40 series I'm not buying until they remove the greed tax on top of what they claimed was "inflation" But nope people still snapped up the cards, so zero incentive to bring prices back don't to earth....

Considering the 4070 and Ti variants sell for $1000-$1300 Canadian Peso's today? These cards may as well be made of un-obtanium. Heck even the 6700xt is $500 after taxes here.
Hey dom, thanks for video! I was wondering your opinion, I picked up an excellent open box 4070 for 440$, do u think i did pretty good considering i "saved" 200$ compared to buying a super that sells for 640 with tax. Having a mental battle about it

i'd be very happy with that if I were you - 4070 is only 11-13% slower than the 4070 super, yet you saved about $200, so your 4070 is 31% cheaper than a $640 4070 super based on your numbers. so you got a significantly better value!
Really like Nvidia's heatsink with the fan on either side looks way better in my most humble opinion.
Think I prefer the original colour scheme with the two tone. All black looks a bit cheap.
how about OC 7800xt?
12gb is the only (but big) problem this card has... i hope AMD drops the 7800 to 450 to make it more interesting. Or even better release the 7900 GRE world wide at higher clocks to compete with this one.

Nah 12gb is a big problem if you play in UWQHD or 4k, 12gb aint enough in many games already and you also need to think about the future most will probably have that card for 3+ years when more and more games will need more than 12gb. You shouldn't need to fk with the settings to make 12gb viable, then its obviously not enough. @@krizby87
@@roythunderplump 7900 GRE is barely faster than 7800xt while being more expensive, its widely available in my country and they had to slice the price like thrice now and it still sits on shelves

I wish it had come with 16 GB.
Watching the 4070 super fly off the shelves. Just dropped half an hour ago and already Newegg is half sold out. Two fan versions are $599 while triple fan are $649 and up.

@@powermaster5004 it would also require a re-working of the memory interface - currently only AD103 (RTX 4080/4070 Ti Super) supports a 256-bit memory bus which is needed for 16GB (32 bits per 2GB module). AD104 is used for the 4070 super which is 192-bit, so the VRAM choices are 6/12GB realistically
I dont think it needs 16GB when its a simple upgrade over 4070 , I think 12GB is perfectly fine.

Easiest way to answer is like this:
4070Ti Super should be better than 3090Ti at 4K since 4070Ti is very close to it at 4K.
Better with DLSS3 in supported titles.
To fully utilise it's power,you probably shouldn't go below Ryzen 5 7600 or 5800X3D or Intel i5 13600K at 4K or 7800X3D at 1440p .

In Australia the 4070 super makes no sense. Its same price as current 4070 ti, in aud 4070 is 850 and super is 1119 and 4070 ti is 1149 lol why would you bother
was quite impressed with this until I saw 12GB of VRAM again.
Its a pretty good card tbf. the 12GB should do in most games unless you are pushing settings at higher res. but its not well futureproofed.

4070 Super is not even close to the same price as a 4070 in my country. Its currently about 20% more expensive. Really close to a 4070 ti here which has come down a bit.

Is not the same price, 4070Super is $600usd, the regular 4070 is $530usd

Why is everyone complaining, is 12GB not enough for most games at say 1440p? its not a 4K card, am I right?
Its not really good enough in 2024. at least AMD put 16gb on theirs.

It is enough for 1440p and they can use DLSS and then the 12gb will no longer be an issue. Buuut ppl don’t want to do that for whatever reason lol. I don’t have an issue with it at all
DLSS lowers vram but frame generation increases it again.
@@TorreyCTX exactly, if you’re running DLSS you won’t need frame gen. This card excel on DLSS 3. You won’t have a need for frame gen at all unless you need a gazillion frames. Most ppl don’t need all that. Frame gen also causes lag
The 4070 super is just way too overpriced. Especially with only 12 Gb of VRAM. That's going to hurt in a year or so. Just not worth it.

It beats 7800XT a 16GB card accross the board from what I see.
Vram amount isn't everything.
Plus with DLSS , there is nothing to worry about for next several years.
DLSS often matches Native look, sometimes is slightly below and sometimes better than Native making 4070 Super quite good deal.

PC gamers already got burned with the previous gen and the absurd pandemic prices. This is no different.
Nvidia of 2024, equals poor value and 4k performance at an absurd price.
I mean people can buy 4K TV's for less that £400.00 and 4K monitors for similar prices.
In 2024, I would argue 4K 60 FPS, should be the minimum aim of AMD and Nvidia. Not 1080P and 1440p in 2024.
Instead we have the massive premium pricing of the 70, 80 and 90- series. Where we have to pay for a GPU (looking at you RTX 4090) that can cost more than the rest of all the PC combined. CPU, motherboard, RAM, PSU, SSD's, case, fans, monitor and keyboard!
The RTX 4070 Super indicates to me the lessons have not been learned. Its simply a reaction to the AMD 7800XT.
That we need a disruptor in the market to pull these prices back to sane levels. Intel, is releasing Battlemage. But, I do not hold much hope that prices are coming down soon.

7800XT starts at 500$ and the Nitro is at 560$
4070 starts at 520$ with a half decent gigabyte wind force going for 540$ ( better cards go north of 600 )
With the 4070 super slated to start at 630$ here , as minimum price
I expect the 4070 super to be 650-700$ at least since the non super Ti is over 700$ for a decent card while the cheapest is an inno3d At 660$
It's amazing nvidia keep moving the goalposts further and further away. And dont even bother mentioning Intel.
Biased review with different results for the 4070, 7800xt, rtx 3080 and 4070 s. These results are different than the other reviews and therefore are skewed.

@@KitGuruTech other reviews show different results....this is RTX Pascal Refresh 2000 launch from 2018 again, where a channel like Hardware Canucks told viewers in their faces that certain models of Nvidia cards were good despite the fact that they were slower than competition and more expensive.
It was as clear as a day that those reviews were completely bribed.
Evidence of claims is my personal ownership of current Nvidia and AMD gpu-s. Tests are done on my 5800X3D which is still one of 3 fastest gaming CPU-s on the market at stock clocks.
