- Iain Dale’s Cross Question panel discuss whether ex-Health Secretary Lord Ken Clarke should have his peerage removed amid criticism of him for the infected blood scandal.
Leader of the Alba Party, Alex Salmond, says he shouldn't, because 'you'd have to punish everyone else’.
Conservative MP Heather Wheeler, meanwhile, says that ‘in every job that Ken Clarke took on, he was just one of those very bullish guys’ and blames this on his ‘lack of self-doubt’.
Green Party’s Caroline Lucas says: ‘We need to see some kind of justice for those who have lied and got away with it in the past, and if that means he peerage needs to be removed, then so be it’.
In the 1980s, the government decided against any form of compensation to people infected with HIV, with Lord Ken Clarke, who was health minister at the time, saying there would be no state scheme to compensate those suffering "the unavoidable adverse effects" of medical procedures.

Post office ministers need sacking.
Hillsborough ministers need sacking.
Grenfell ministers need sacking.
Covid money ministers need sacking.
School asbestos ministers need sacking.
The list goes on and on with these scandals.
the list goes on and on..what else was swept under the carpet?..i think big brown envolopes were involved.
Jailing would be more appropriate !
no accountability hence this list of names will continue!
We only hear an apology for these things when the people responsible are either very old or gone. I wonder what scandal they'll be apologising for in 2065?🤔....
Brexit
@@vectispete9415 - You can't think of some sort of state mandated medical intervention that has caused massive harm recently then?
Covid
Simply stop awarding CBEs, OBEs etc
... and take them back when anyone known to have committed ANY crimes that have resulted in ANY deaths owing to their negligence and lying when in office - simple !
Guilty as sin. The lot of them.
Thatcher led to everything declining
*succeeding
so are you blaming her for all the other scandals about this, it was worldwide ?
Blair led to everything decaying.
@@anonomous8719 you are joking right?
The country was in total disarray when she came to power, I remember it well. Power cuts, strikes, unemployment, imf running this country.
While I think he did wrong, and I agree with Ian Dale: Ken Clarke was flippant and condescending, I agree that he should not be the only one to carry the can. All of them should face some form of consequence.
Remove Camerons peerage!!!!!! 🤬🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
A reset on the UK honours system should include nullifying all of the knighthoods and peerages awarded for political services and party donations. When all the damage caused to Britain in the last 14 years is accounted for by Tory recipients then jail sentences should be given out instead.
Criminal charges to INDIVIDUAL ON THE TOP.
Every Health Minister that hid it, every person that signed that contract.
Then this cover-ups will stop.
If you just fine the organization, they don't care at all and WE pay for it.

Do the same here.
Andrew finestine running against kier stammer is the best news of the day
What's the price of cheese again?
Not to excuse Clarke one bit, but Salmond makes a solid point about more recent health debacles. The Covid PM and Health Secretary come to mind.
The whole of Westminster, the HoC & the HoL should be scrapped, neither of them are fit for purpose.
Never going to happen Conservatives look after their own.
Just like Labour who sells out their own to everyone else. Two cheeks of the same rear end.
Remember he had the ambulance service on strike, back in the day,yet was regarded as the "Father of the House".Unbelievable.
Criminal investigation needs done!
Brilliant idea, they absolutely all are culpable and all should face justice
it is probably a corrrect assertion, many were involved for decades, but that just means that no one will be held accountable. Perhaps Parliament should be held accountable. Reduce numbers and salaries. Force Prime Ministers to answer questions in PMQs, immediate suspension for lying to the house. (judicial decision, not Parliament). They have proven that they cannot be allowed to police themselves.
Why can’t we de-title the lot.? If they haven’t worked in the interest of the country. That goes for all the on going enquiries.
Nice to hear Alex Salmond speaking. A certain gravitas that is so often lacking south of the border. I wouldn't like to be solely held accountable for my work decisions forty years ago
Yes, and he should be in court!
Removal of peerage is nowhere near the punishment deserved. This is just a smokescreen. There should be prosecutions for those in positions to do something to resolve issues as important as this. The only way to stop this is to hold top people to account and custodial sentences enforced. If not this will continue Too many think ignoring problems and intransigence is ok. It is not.
But we are the poor..we dont count.

YES!
This arch toff will get away with everything.
The House of Lard Arses.
Tippical tory attitude... Easton and Oxford rich list.
If a knighthood states that you are always looking out for other people, not yourself (name one), then he hasn't earnt his peerage. If your peerage is because you're just another political stooge, he's definitely in there.
Labour too and america
Punish ALL the guilty
I remember Ken Clarke avoiding answering questions, the man was useless to the British people .
You can't hold someone accountable when there are people who have not been held accountable. The logic of a 5 year old. 😮
This is not what is meant: what is meant is that all people somehow involved must be held to acccount and punished simultaneously.
Other countries tackled the issue before the UK, and again, the UK refused to learn from other countries and draw consequences.
Imprisonment isnt out of the question.
Ian dale let me play devil's advocate, 🤣🤣🤣
Hands off my pinball machine, you. XD
I don't understand how giving compensation to dead people can help anything.
It's for their families as compensation for losing relatives!
Some of the victims are alive & still suffering from the results of this travesty. They deserve compensation....
There needs to be a root and branch reform of the legal system to bring Politicians and senior management members under the law and create real sanctions for those who knowingly cover up and ignore these outrages when they occur.
Rishi Sunak, the Partygate party goer has proposed a code of conduct, typical, codes of conducts for them, politicians, probably with slap wrists as sanctions, whilst laws for us little people like the Sunak's anti protest laws where we can get arrested and taken to court and jailed for simply standing there and doing nothing. Proper laws that bring those responsible to book not wishy-washy charters which let those responsible off the hook.
Portugal, France and various other countries had prison sentences dished out to individuals responsible for the same scandal over 30 years ago...meanwhile in the UK, cover up is the name of the game.
He Truly Should Go To Prison
Calm down ffs
The American blood industry exports 70% of plasma used worldwide worth $24 billion a year. Anericans, increasingly middle class Americans, sell their blood sometimes just to get by and pay bills. There are blood purchasing shops popping up like Poundland in some places suffering economically like Flint. There's a book about it called Blood Money.
Thatcher made a televised broadcast saying that she has refused David Owen's call for a British blood service.
Gazza is not a state its a city under occupation and resistance is not terrorisme
Huh?🤔 Wrong video??🙄
Gazza ? The footballer
But at least the fog on the Tyne is all theirs, all theirs
Has been run by Hamas for quite a while I think from 2005
Why does nobody point fingers at American blood banks selling & supplying contaminated/infected blood products? The UK and others bought this blood due to a serious shortage at home. Blood transfusions save lives and these were exceptional circumstances, unfortunately. Unless there are wrong motives & bad intentions it's hard to blame individuals. Of course, victims & families should have been compensated a long time ago.
of course not, there is no evidence suggesting he wasn't trying to do the best for the nation, i.e. his job
and if clarke has to lose his, surely starmers must be up for review for 1. failing to prosecute savvile, despite having the evidence and expertise, and almost certainly being involved in the decision before it was taken, and 2. failing to stop the PO horizon prosecutions despite his responsibilty to stop any prosecution, public or private, not in the 'public interest'
Various health secretaries and governments in general have been neglectful over this for fifty years. I don't think the blame can be pinned on Clarke.
We need more like Caroline Lucas - gutted she's standing down next GE....
Typical tory bs. "We've done a great job" (reluctantly and late).
Lord Clark Kent? 😃
In years to come all will be revealed about KC & LBC know that well.
