  • Iain Dale’s Cross Question panel discuss whether ex-Health Secretary Lord Ken Clarke should have his peerage removed amid criticism of him for the infected blood scandal.
Leader of the Alba Party, Alex Salmond, says he shouldn't, because 'you'd have to punish everyone else’.
Conservative MP Heather Wheeler, meanwhile, says that ‘in every job that Ken Clarke took on, he was just one of those very bullish guys’ and blames this on his ‘lack of self-doubt’.
Green Party’s Caroline Lucas says: ‘We need to see some kind of justice for those who have lied and got away with it in the past, and if that means he peerage needs to be removed, then so be it’.
In the 1980s, the government decided against any form of compensation to people infected with HIV, with Lord Ken Clarke, who was health minister at the time, saying there would be no state scheme to compensate those suffering "the unavoidable adverse effects" of medical procedures.

A reset on the UK honours system should include nullifying all of the knighthoods and peerages awarded for political services and party donations. When all the damage caused to Britain in the last 14 years is accounted for by Tory recipients then jail sentences should be given out instead.

it is probably a corrrect assertion, many were involved for decades, but that just means that no one will be held accountable. Perhaps Parliament should be held accountable. Reduce numbers and salaries. Force Prime Ministers to answer questions in PMQs, immediate suspension for lying to the house. (judicial decision, not Parliament). They have proven that they cannot be allowed to police themselves.

Removal of peerage is nowhere near the punishment deserved. This is just a smokescreen. There should be prosecutions for those in positions to do something to resolve issues as important as this. The only way to stop this is to hold top people to account and custodial sentences enforced. If not this will continue Too many think ignoring problems and intransigence is ok. It is not.

Other countries tackled the issue before the UK, and again, the UK refused to learn from other countries and draw consequences.

There needs to be a root and branch reform of the legal system to bring Politicians and senior management members under the law and create real sanctions for those who knowingly cover up and ignore these outrages when they occur.
Rishi Sunak, the Partygate party goer has proposed a code of conduct, typical, codes of conducts for them, politicians, probably with slap wrists as sanctions, whilst laws for us little people like the Sunak's anti protest laws where we can get arrested and taken to court and jailed for simply standing there and doing nothing. Proper laws that bring those responsible to book not wishy-washy charters which let those responsible off the hook.

The American blood industry exports 70% of plasma used worldwide worth $24 billion a year. Anericans, increasingly middle class Americans, sell their blood sometimes just to get by and pay bills. There are blood purchasing shops popping up like Poundland in some places suffering economically like Flint. There's a book about it called Blood Money.

Why does nobody point fingers at American blood banks selling & supplying contaminated/infected blood products? The UK and others bought this blood due to a serious shortage at home. Blood transfusions save lives and these were exceptional circumstances, unfortunately. Unless there are wrong motives & bad intentions it's hard to blame individuals. Of course, victims & families should have been compensated a long time ago.

of course not, there is no evidence suggesting he wasn't trying to do the best for the nation, i.e. his job
and if clarke has to lose his, surely starmers must be up for review for 1. failing to prosecute savvile, despite having the evidence and expertise, and almost certainly being involved in the decision before it was taken, and 2. failing to stop the PO horizon prosecutions despite his responsibilty to stop any prosecution, public or private, not in the 'public interest'
