Well done! I’ve been looking for a simple tutorial on ableton automation and most of them are needlessly complicated. This one gets straight to the point and doesn’t add a ton of useless info. Thanks!
incredibly helpful for the ones that are starting automating using a midi controler in ableton. Basically all you need to know about it to make it work straight away. Thanks a lot for this.
You know I’ve had to watch this video about four times over and go back two Working and ableton a bunch to get how to do automation, but i finally got it... four years into production... finally I understand...
Incase anyone else has trouble, I spent about 2 hours trying to figure out something i didnt see this video cover. DONT ARM the track youre doing automation on. Correct me if I'm wrong but I kept trying to figure out why it wasnt recording automation, or why it kept recording blank, or why i didnt even hear my track, and finally after all that time, i realized i had to not have my track armed, I only had the automation button clicked on and I hit record.
When the red dot is activated with automation.. I suddenly can't change the volume past a certain threshold? And it turns automation off.. I don't understand that issue..
Thank you for the tutorial! I'm struggling to figure out how to map a midi cc such as expression? It doesn't have a knob or anything so how to you map midi ccs that aren't already assigned somewhere?
Thanks! Is there any way to record automation only to armed tracks in arrangement mode? Say that you add another track where you want to modulate filter envelope with the same slider without overriding the original automation. "Record session automation in" is set to "armed tracks" - but my question is about arrangement view (not session view)
How can I have an external MIDI mapping automation not erased at each loop pass in the session view? I have activated the + sign but the only way I found to prevent it is to erase the MIDI mapping assignation.
@@MusicTechOfficial you’re welcome. And actually there is something I’d like to suggest, I’d love to see a very thorough video in MACROS in Ableton Live. Have a great day!
Can you export automation lines? I am exporting stems to be mixed and in my production, I have a few bpm automation. Like myself the mixing engineer like to keep everything locked in place in the session. He Uses DP which has that option. If Ableton doesn't have that option, what would be the best solution?
Thanx for the great tutorial! Can I also re-edit the recorded automation in a later part of the track? (keeping the old recorded automation in the beginning of my track + adding the new recorded automation in a later part in the same track + same control) Cause if I try to do that now, then it gets grey and automation gets enabled for this control + the re-enable automation ''orange'' arrow lights up.
Hey Lennart. If you edit a parameter within Ableton Live, the automation for that parameter within your track is temporarily disabled until you hit the "Back to Arrangement" button in the top right hand corner of the arrangement window. To record automation later in the track, you need to hit the record button in the top transport bar and make the changes as the track is playing. This should leave your automation in place earlier on in the track, as well as recording the changes in the later part of the track. Does this answer your question? Let us know if not, we're more than happy to help :) Thanks

In arrangement view can you record the automation lanes while recording the midi notes? When I do that the lanes are not recorded (but the midi CC changes are saved somewhere)
Hey Bob, when you're recording, all activity will be recorded, including played MIDI notes and automation, as long as you have 'Automation Arm' enabled. This is located in the transport bar at the top of the window. Let us know if this doesn't solve it, we're happy to help!
Hey there, is there any way to record automation over audio tracks as well? This method seems to only work for MIDI since the MIDI overdub button doesn't enable overdub for nothing but MIDI. Therefore when I'm trying to record automation over audio clips it deletes everything old.
Just found out how it works, you have to arm automation, but do not arm the clip for recording, just press global recording at the top, now it should record your automation

You have to do it with the looping 'thing' - I'm new to this tech side, I heard it in one of vids that came up
Just found out how it works, you have to arm automation, but do not arm the clip for recording, just press global recording at the top, now it should record your automation
can you record automation over an audio file also?
You certainly can!
