    I have tried this. The procedure is simple and if you are careful it would not damage your camera in anyway. Do remember to mark the initial position of the screw so you can roll back. As in my case, nikon d90 front focus, this procedure does not cure it. I might have to try Nikon service again. Last time, it was backfocus and the service guide did too good and it turns out to be front focus significantly. I would recommend cameras with AF fine tune feature from now on.

    I m thinking of buying Nikon D5100 as my first DSLR. But after viewing this, I m a bit discouraged.
    I think I'll rather go for Canon T2i or T3i, a reliable system is the most important.

    your advice is fine, but if you had taken the battery out, the curtain would have covered the sensor - that would be a bit safer way of doing that...
